2 Collegiate Assessmet of Academic Proficiecy (CAAP) Critical Thikig Test EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The preset report cotais the results from the CAAP Critical Thikig Test take April Scores were obtaied from a voluteer studet sample of 111 studets of sophomore stadig. Results of the aalysis idicate that o average, studets scored above the level of their respective ormative group. DESCRIPTION The CAAP Critical Thikig Test is a 32-item, 40-miute test that measures studets' skills i clarifyig, aalyzig, evaluatig, ad extedig argumets. A argumet is defied as a sequece of statemets that icludes a claim that oe of the statemets, the coclusio, follows from the other statemets. The Critical Thikig Test cosists of four passages that are represetative of the kids of issues commoly ecoutered i a postsecodary curriculum. A passage typically presets a series of sub-argumets i support of a more geeral coclusio or coclusios. Each passage presets oe or more argumets usig a variety of formats, icludig case studies, debates, dialogues, overlappig positios, statistical argumets, experimetal results, or editorials. Each passage is accompaied by a set of multiple-choice test items. A total score is provided for the Critical Thikig Test; o sub-scores are provided. 3 ASSESSMENT STRATEGY Sprig 2017 was the third time the CAAP Critical Thikig was used at. The Curriculum ad Program Improvemet Coordiator worked with Istitutioal Research to create a list of degree-seekig studets with 50 credit hours or more who were erolled i Sprig 2017 classes. That list was the broke dow by those seekig a Arts, Geeral Studies, or a Sciece ad those seekig a Applied Sciece or Techical Certificate who would beefit from takig the CAAP test. All studets idetified o the list i the first category received a i February ivitig them to take the CAAP Crticial Thikig Test. The Applicatio for Postig of Degree form was also modified to ecourage studets to voluteer to take the CAAP Critical Thikig Test. Furthermore, several istructors voluteered class time for the test s admiistratio. A total of 111 studets completed the CAAP Crticial Thikig Test. The test was admistered i Hutchiso, McPherso, ad Newto from April 6 to April 21. The 111 studets (M=62.7, S.D.=5.0) scored above the atioal average based upo studets takig the test (M=60.2, S.D.=5.4). Workig with istructors to admiister the CAAP test i classes allowed for a icreased participatio compared to Sprig 2015 ad a slight icrease i participatio compared to Sprig The participats represet a cross-sectio of i terms of degrees, majors, ad past educatioal performace. While the average remaied above the atioal bechmark, the score icreased from 2016 but is still below 2015 results. To cotiue to improve the score, it is recommeded both istructors ad co-curriculuar advisors stress critical thikig skills by utilizig s Critical Thikig Rubric. Activities occurig both i ad outside of the classroom ca help studets stregthe their critical thikig. To support these efforts, professioal developmet activities, icludig Teachig Tuesdays focused o critical thikig, will be made available to istructors ad co-curricular advisors.
