Lessons Learned Virtual SAN on UCS
Lessons Learned: Proven Production Benefits Eight months into production Storage Costs are lower Time to deploy is lower VMware View Pool deployments are faster Daily refreshes are faster Flexible expansion
Lessons Learned: Deploying Virtual SAN on UCS Pay Close Attention to the VMware Virtual SAN HCL (just because a device is supported by ESXi doesn t mean it is supported by Virtual SAN) Don t Make Assumptions About SAS/SATA Controller Capabilities and Performance JBOD vs PassThru Understand how the modes and capabilities work with Virtual SAN Enable IGMP Snooping to optimize multicast traffic flows. UCS Manager has IGMP Snooping enabled by default. Prioritize the Virtual SAN storage network via QoS to ensure optimal throughput
Lessons Learned: Deploying Virtual SAN on UCS Pay close attention to Object and Component Counts to ensure expected scalability Use the Ruby vsphere Console (RVC) CLI for Virtual SAN storage resource utilization per host and to perform what-if simulation scenarios for host failure impact to the cluster. Horizon View 6 mitigates component counts with VSAN Storage Profile Integration (Ex: Non-persistent clones can get FTT-0, while the Replica can have FTT-2) Use the RVC Virtual SAN Observer tool to monitor and gather in-depth performance metrics for Virtual SAN.
Conclusion Reduce Infrastructure acquisition and operational costs by leveraging a unified virtual architecture based on Virtual SAN and UCS Cisco UCS provides an excellent platform for unified management, improved performance, and flexibility to support both rack mount and bladed servers in the same architecture VMware Virtual SAN reduces storage complexity and management over traditional SAN-based solutions
