Contracts, International Scientific Projects Computer Networks Laboratory (CNL, Philosophy of the Laboratory: The laboratory was established in 1995 as results of research and pilot projects accomplished in cooperation with the industrial enterprises (Slovak Telecom, Elfa, s.r.o.). Nowadays it belongs to top laboratories in Slovakia that deal with advanced network technologies. The research in the laboratory is concentrated to computer networks & solution that enable to offer communication services of required Quality of Sevices (QoS), i.e. a new effective metods of transferring of multimedia form of information with required quality. A special attention is devoted to the following fields of interest: Effective methods of evaluation of QoS parameters; Effective video transfering based on IP streaming, interactive IPTV solution, Next generation videoconferencing solutions, video searching engine, automatic video processing analysis of bottlenecks in streaming scenarios Modeling of distributed systems, creation of criteria function for describing of network node load, development of fully autonomous distributed system for videorecording process WiFi and Voice services of new generation - secure solution of VoIP and WiFi, models of QoS Virtual communication infrastructures and their utilization in educational practice: solution based on LMS, CBA, elements of security, multiuser and distributed functionality, learning object repository, knowledge assessment design and implementation of advanced testing system to determine level of reached knowledge Visualisation, monitoring and management of large computer networks, advanced topology discovery and automatic network management In 1999, on basis of the CNL, the first Regional CISCO Network Academy (RA) was established there that in framework of the Networking Academy program implementation has ensured a certified education of network specialists on basis of industrial standards having worldwide validity. The training materials are available for the students through the portal: The portal also offers a full administrative e-learning environment for management of learning and a continuous evaluation of students knowledge. The laboratory consists of a complex of five rooms equipped by top networking technology that are suitable for teaching, training and scientific activities. The laboratory ensures an integrated-type education in scope of information and communication technologies applied to field of computer networks, their design, administration and management.the CNL has at its disposal the videoconference systems for organization of IP videoconferences. In CNL successful functional model of involvement of students in the scientific and Department of Computers and Informatics 17

18 research activities was built. The students are admitted in the CNL on the basis of internal selection. On the lab basis almost one hundred of interesting diploma works, semester projects and scientific and specialized works of student were awarded several awards also on international level. Currently CNL is internationally recognized centre of e-learning technologies and the centre of preparation of network specialists. Excellent results which were achieved over the long-term in the area of pilot projects, found positive response among the experts not only in the Slovakia but also abroad. RCNA based on CNL acquired several international award (Paris 2000, Copenhagen 2002 academy of the year in the region EMEA) and in 2001 the lab received an award at a conference COFAX from the ATM Association in the SR for the set of Pilot Projects. The latest CNL award is the award of the Project of the Year received by RCNA at CNL in Valencia (Spain) in September 2005 at an annual conference for the project IP Telephony for the academic sphere in the SR. Appreciation of the results achieved within CNL is underlined by the fact that head of the CNL, F. Jakab, was awarded as the IT personality of the year 2006 by the representatives of the most significant IT media and non-formal associations in the Slovakia as the only person from TUKE at all. The lab is frequently visited by renowned experts from foreign university departments as a part of the programs of internships and placements. The laboratory is in charge of the following activities: ensuring education of subjects specialized to computer networks and network infrastructures in the branch of study Computers and Informatics coordinating of networking academic program implementation into the study programs at the TUKE and ensuring operation of the Regional Cisco Network Academy and preparation of teachers and students for certification CCNA and CCNP fulfilling functions of pedagogical, research, coordinating and expert centre for network infrastructures of the Technical University and coordinating cooperation with industrial sphere in field of networking. Human Resources of CNL The members of the CNL ensure the everyday routine operation according to the operating instructions in a form of daily services.
