Workforce CAREER PATHWAY OVERVIEW NEMCC offers three Career Certifications through the Gulf States Career Pathway Program (GSCPP). The FREE classes follow a new, accelerated model which integrates basic skills instruction with technical training allowing students to complete certification in as little as six months to one year depending on each student s time, availability, and learning skills. The program offers skills training and employment opportunities in multiple sectors sharing a common Information Technology (IT) foundation. The coursework content is driven by industry and employers and will allow you to enter the workforce earlier with your new skill set. Through the U.S. Department of Labor s Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training (TAACCCT) initiative, nine community and technical colleges from Mississippi (5) and Louisiana (4) have joined together into the Retraining the Gulf Coast Workforce through IT Pathways Consortium to address the critical challenges facing tradeimpacted workers and to meet the high demand for IT workers in their regions. The NCTN serves as a technical assistance partner to the Consortium, along with the National Council for Workforce Education (NCWE), Jobs for the Future (JFF), and the Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges (SBCTC).

Workforce Training Options Customized Training Training needs, even on the same topic, can vary within the fluid work environment of most business and industry. It is our goal to design/customize the funding and facilitation of training to fit the needs of each business. This customization may involve curriculum, training site, choice of instructors, etc. Most training occurs at the business, but classrooms, meeting rooms, and laboratories are available at the college when needed. It is the goal of our division to customize a training plan to assist an industry with any training needs that develop the job skills of the employees and improve the stability of the company. We will assist with the location of instructors when needed. These instructors can be college faculty, vendors, division staff, specialized trainers, etc. When the best trainers are found within the industry, we can reimburse the industry directly for some or all of the trainers salaries. Consortium Training When a company has fewer than the required state minimum of five participants in a training area, our division attempts to locate other companies needing the same training to group them as a consortium. When the required number of trainees is achieved, the training is given to the group. Pre-Employment Training One of the major costs in a new business start up is employee turnover. When requested, we use a company selected curriculum to match candidates with jobs and/or orient them for future jobs. This curriculum may include topics such as work ethics, appropriate dress, job expectations, and technical skill requirements. Candidates who fail to meet such requirements as promptness, regular attendance, and cooperativeness are filtered from the program. Safety and Health Training Occupational safety and health training reduces employee injuries and illness, significant areas in productivity and profitability. We have instructors who can provide training at no cost in such areas as forklift operation and safety, bloodborne pathogens 1st Aid/CPR, hazard communication, ergonomics, 1st Responder, lockout/tagout, fire safety, hazardous materials, personal protective equipment, etc. Short Term Training Various non-credit short term classes are available to meet local demands for new and upgraded skills. These classes are open to people of all ages and skill levels. Following is a listing of typically offered courses; however, other courses will be developed and offered if there is sufficient demand. Typical courses are Emergency Medical Technician Basic,

Emergency Medical Technician Refresher, Certified Nurse Assistant, Emergency Vehicle Driving Certification, Medical Billing, 1st Responder, ServSafe, Reserve Law Enforcement Officer, QuickBooks, etc. Rapid Response This is an early intervention service offered to the employees of companies experiencing major layoffs or plant closings. A team comprised of representatives from all pertinent local and state agencies offering potential assistance is mobilized. This team meets with the workers to make them aware of all available services, from job searches to new training, to assist them in securing new employment. Personal Development Personal Development provides individuals an opportunity to market their skills through preparation in designing resumes, sharpening interviewing skills, and developing work ethics. Our goal is to improve educational, career, and personal decision-making in a professional and caring manner. Through this program, NEMCC provides free personal, academic, and career counseling, including free classes to prepare individuals to obtain employment or improve work skills. We also offer employment assessments for both pre-employment and the current workforce. Other SERVICES include: Educational planning/testing to facilitate career decisions, choice of major, course selection, and personal growth. Assisting Basic and Developmental students with time management and other needs. Presenting workshops on topics of personal enrichment, self improvement, and other topics important to students. Referral to community human services agencies for further assistance.

Appendix A Study Enhancement Guide Basic Study Skills 1. Break up your study time into smaller pieces. Know the purpose of each assignment, what to do and how to do it before leaving the class. 2. Keep a clear record of your assignments. Predict how much time will be needed for each assignment. Time your assignment. You ll work harder, concentrate better, and won t get bored. 3. Time how long it takes you to read five pages. This will help you estimate how long it will take you to do the assignment. You may have to read some sections more than once; reflect on the reading. Allow time for this. 4. Pay attention to charts and diagrams. They can be short cuts to understanding. 5. When reading assignment is made, realize that you might have a discussion about it or a quiz. Take time to review. 6. When you study, spend 10 minutes in review of previous assignments. These are refresher shots a secret to long-term memory. Frequent review results in less time needed studying for major tests. It s a good habit! 7. Study during the day. At night you are less efficient. 8. After studying 40 minutes, take a 5-minute break. This is a mind-refresher that helps you concentrate better and finish faster. 9. Set a stopping time. This helps you keep going and concentrate. 10. Don t cram for hours the night before a test. Distribute study over ½ hour segments over a period of days. 11. Learning is cumulative. Incorporate new ideas into previous learning from lectures, readings, lab experiments, etc. Continuously make connections and associations in your mind. Putting it together daily makes it easier. Improved learning is the natural results. 12. Set realistic expectations when deciding on college courses. Select courses based on how/when they are taught, making sure enough time is built into course planning for completing assignments. --Taken from research by Mary E. Ford, Ed.D., Special Educational Consultant.

Tension about tests inability to demonstrate content mastery Test anxiety; poor test-taking skills Study skills course/module in test taking, test anxiety Alternate testing strategies, e.g. verbal, class presentation The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Managing Stress: A Guide for College Students Stress Management: A Wellness Lifestyle Approach Stress is a part of life, but the healthier you are, the better able you are to manage stress when it happens. Chronic stress can impact your immune system, which lowers your resistance to getting sick. Approaching stress management from a wellness lifestyle approach can give you "money in the bank" when it comes to preventing stress, and can give you the energy you need to handle stress when it happens. The following components are part of a wellness lifestyle approach. Attitude: "Attitude is everything." What does that mean? The way you think about things can make all the difference in how you react to events. In this section, we explore how you can change the way you think in order to reduce stress. Healthy Eating: Good nutrition and healthy eating habits can help you through your stressful times now, not just prevent a heart attack 30 years down the road. Eating well will increase your physical, mental, and emotional stamina. Fueling yourself with nutrient dense foods can boost your immune system, help you maintain a healthy weight and help you feel better about yourself. Check out the Healthy Eating section for a quick diet assessment and ideas on how to fuel yourself better. Physical Activity: Physical activity provides immediate stress relief as well as long-term stress management. Just minutes of walking a day, for example, can give you more energy, help you put things in perspective, improve your sleep, sharpen your mental productivity, and boost your self-confidence. Our bodies are made to move and everyone can find some type of activity that is enjoyable. Relaxing Your Mind and Body: There are a number of relaxation techniques that can help you manage stress and also improve your concentration, productivity and overall well-being. Sleep: Consistent sleep is critical for a healthy life. Although we all need varying amounts of sleep, if we do not get enough sleep, everything from our immune system to our ability to learn and remember

information will be negatively affected. Sleep is as important as nutrition and exercise when preparing for peak performance. Healthy Relationships: Changes in relationships can be a source of stress for many students, as can feeling socially isolated. At the same time, talking with a supportive friend or family member can be helpful in coping with stress. This section emphasizes conflict resolution for stress management. Time Management: Sometimes all the things we have to do can seem overwhelming and impossible to accomplish. Learning how to be a good time manager is a skill that you can use throughout your life, which can make work, play and studying more manageable, more productive and less stressful. Learn about the ABCs of time management. Alcohol and Other Drugs: Alcohol and other drug use can lead to many problems that can add stress to our lives. High-risk use can lead to poor decision-making, impaired abstract thinking, injury and legal problems. By understanding your overall risks, you can make healthier choices. Tobacco: Tobacco can impact your sleep, ability to fight infection and overall health. These issues can create stressful situations. Tobacco use by some, however, is seen as a stress reducer. In order to achieve a healthy lifestyle, it is important to learn strategies to deal with stressors and to understand that quitting tobacco use takes time and practice. Money Management: When you consider that the average credit card debt of an undergrad is $2,748, it's no wonder why finances are a common stressor for college students. This section offers tips on money management and credit card use. Spirituality: Spirituality means finding personal meaning in your life; it doesn't mean just following a particular religious dogma. This section describes how exploring spirituality may be helpful in managing stress University Health Center at the University of Georgia UGA Student Affairs
