If there is a risk of several interpretations of identifying a segment (e.g. two different lines joining the starting and ending points), then a third point could be used to unambiguously identify the segment. Note that the traffic is recorded in both directions of each segment, identifiable by the code following "S" in the unique segment identifier: "1" means the same directions as in technical characteristics and in geographical coordinates and "2" means the opposite direction. Rail/3. Legal acts and rules of implementation - flag on whether the segment belongs to TEN network (a link to country specific maps of TEN network can be found in the same CIRCA Library directory), - length of the segment in km, - number of tracks, - flag on whether the segment is electrified, - for electrified segments the type of current (AC/DC, frequency, voltage) and - if possible, the UIC line code(s) (that aim at matching the segment with GISCO system). Note that the traffic is recorded in both directions of each segment, identifiable by the code following -S- "1" means the same directions as in technical characteristics and in geographical co-ordinates; "2" means the opposite direction. 5 Information to be provided For purposes of the coverage of the 2005 E-Rail Census, the rail network to be considered consists of: lines that are included in Annex 1 of the European Agreement on Main International Railway Lines (AGC) of 1985 and in Amendments 1-6 to the Agreement (ECE/TRANS/63, and any other amendment which comes into force before 2005); lines that are included in the European Agreement on Important International Combined Transport Lines and Related Installations (AGTC) of 1991 and in Amendments 1-3 to the Agreement (ECE/TRANS/88/Rev.1, and any other amendment which comes into force before 2005); and in the European Union countries, lines in the Trans-European rail network (TEN) (Decision 1692/96/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council and further amendments). 5

6 Information to be provided Eurostat together with DK provided an example of E-RAIL CENSUS data and an example of railway traffic on the network (map). It has been available on Circa since September

7 Question on Annex G data How to provide the number of trains properly? 1) by providing the total number of trains which used the segment (even if they did not use the whole segment) or 2) by providing the average number of trains (train-kms divided by the length of the segment). According to the provision of Regulation, the total number of trains should be provided. Eurostat recommends revising the segments to improve the quality of the data segments should be defined so that they have homogeneous technical characteristics and homogeneous traffic along it. 7

9 Next steps in Annex G data collection Validation procedures of Annex G data will be launched mid- July. Structure of NC tables will be finalised in the second half of Dissemination of maps will be considered. 9
