1 CHANNELIZED /E1, DS-3, and OC-3/STM-1 CEM NETWORK MODULES Circuit Emulation Interfaces for ASX, TNX, BXR 400, and BXR1600 Multiservice Switches Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) networks have long been a popular choice for organizations that require support for mission- and business-critical applications. Ericsson multiservice switches well recognized for their reliability, flexibility, and security features have been deployed as ATM switching elements in federal infrastructures as well as operator and service provider edge and backbone networks. The addition of channelized Circuit Emulation (CEM) network modules enhances and extends the applications supported by Ericsson switches by providing for fast and easy delivery of Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) solutions over an ATM infrastructure. The CEM modules offer a costeffective and space-efficient way to deliver private line services, voice transport, and switched voice connectivity. By deploying high-density switch interfaces, network operators can reduce footprint and operational costs. Three channelized CEM network modules are available: /E1, DS-3, and OC-3/STM-1. All three are native to the Ericsson ASX200BX, ASX1000, ASX1200, TNX210, and multiservice switches. The /E1 module is also supported natively on the BXR400 and BXR1600 multiservice switches. In addition, the /E1 and DS-3 modules can be utilized in ASX4000 and ASX4000M multiservice switches equipped with the Network Module Carrier Card (NMC). Key benefits Flexible bandwidth selection enables consolidation of multiple access lines and traffic types High-capacity channelization reduces switching equipment requirements, ensuring maximum space utilization Modules provide an alternate solution for delivery of private line and voice services through direct connection of TDM-bearing services into existing multiservice networks Fewer network elements, less rack space, and lower power requirements translate into a simplified network configuration and lower operating and maintenance costs Aggregation significantly reduces cabling complexity, simplifies troubleshooting and maintenance, and enhances network reliability

2 Class 4/5 Voice Switch ch CEM Voice Switch PSTN N x DS-0 DS-0 ch CEM TNX210 or ATM Network TNX210 or DACS Ring ADM Class 4/5 Voice Switch ASX1000 or ASX1200 ADM Ring Typical configurations with the channelized CEM network modules Flexible bandwidth selection An ATM backbone provides a flexible infrastructure for provisioning services aimed at revenue generation. With this network infrastructure, operators and service providers gain the flexibility to set up multiple connections for delivery of a full range of bandwidth capacities (DS-0/E0, N x DS-0/E0, and /E1) to meet the varying bandwidth requirements of their customers. This flexibility enables a variety of access lines and traffic types (for example, voice, video, and data) to be consolidated into a bandwidth-efficient multiservice ATM network. Efficient space utilization A multiservice ATM network that supports CEM service can groom customer service connections. This reduces equipment footprint in the central office (CO) by eliminating the need for additional digital access and cross-connect system (DACS) equipment. Private line delivery Private line services represent a significant and growing volume of operator and service provider revenue. By delivering incremental private line services via an ATM multiservice network, operators and service providers can cap their investment in obsolete TDM technology and transition TDM private-line traffic to an ATM backbone all while maintaining a steady revenue source. Voice services The channelized CEM network modules enable highly efficient backhaul of voice traffic to Class 5 switches in the public switches telephone network (PSTN). In this type of configuration, voice traffic from individual private branch exchanges (PBXs) uses the modules ATM statistical multiplexing capability to eliminate dedicated TDM network resources used in the past. As such, network operators are able to simplify their infrastructures and reduce operational costs. Simplified network configuration Using the channelized CEM network modules in a multiservice backbone creates a solid foundation for delivering other incremental services such as Frame Relay, Ethernet, and ATM. This lessens the need for build-out or expansion of multiple network types, which in turn reduces the number of network elements an operator or service provider has to operate and maintain. Flexible investment for maximum value Operators, service providers, and enterprise customers can deploy the ASX200BX, TNX210, and BXR400 multiservice platforms as either customer premise equipment (CPE) or customerlocated equipment (CLE) to aggregate traffic, including Ethernet (using the 10/100 or Gigabit Ethernet network modules) and voice traffic. Organizations can also use the eight-port channelized /E1 CEM network module over an ATM network to simplify and efficiently manage head-office and branch-office communications.

3 The /E1 CEM module also offers the perfect opportunity to start with a smaller investment while providing the option to expand further on an as-needed basis. The smaller, modular unit is a more cost-conscious choice in comparison to higher-density, larger CEM modules, especially when considering sparing expenses. With the option to increase value on an incremental basis and the flexibility to mix and match CEM, Frame Relay, Ethernet, and ATM services over the same platform, Ericsson offers the smartest choice for customers that want maximum value for their investment. Lower operating costs By migrating private line services to a multiservice ATM network, government, operator, and service provider customers can reduce the costs associated with managing, provisioning, maintaining, and upgrading standalone TDM networks. ATM networks also allow for simplified service provisioning. In an ATM network, once the two endpoints of a private line service have been identified, provisioning, routing, and crossconnection of the single constant bit rate (CBR) ATM permanent virtual circuit (PVC) can be completed in a matter of minutes. That s because these functions are accomplished via simple pointand-click interfaces incorporated in the network management system. Such convenient service setup and teardown increases staff productivity and reduces operating costs a clear win-win. Reduced cabling complexity In operator and service provider networks, cabling complexity contributes significantly to the cost of maintenance, troubleshooting, network upgrades, and modifications. The channelized DS-3 and OC-3/STM-1 CEM network modules allows these organizations to aggregate a large number of N x DS-0 and /E1 cables into a single DS-3 or OC-3/STM-1, significantly reducing overall network cabling complexity. In addition to simplifying operations, a single optical interface also provides a more secure and reliable transmission facility. Key features All modules Three models available to support a range of requirements Eight-port channelized /E1 CEM network module (channelized to DS-0/E0 ports) Three-port channelized DS-3 CEM network module (channelized to /E1 and DS-0 levels) One-port channelized OC-3/STM-1 CEM network module (single mode, intermediate reach, or multimode - channelized to /E1 and DS-0 levels) Supported natively on the ASX200BX, ASX1000, ASX1200, TNX210, and switches Supported on the ASX4000 and ASX4000M via the NMC (in planning for the channelized OC-3/ STM-1 CEM module) ATM Adaptation Layer Type 1 (AAL-1) Circuit Emulation Service (CES) in compliance with the MFA Forum CES 2.0 specification (af-vtoa ) Support for structured AAL-1 CES /E1 module: DS-0/E0, /E1, and N x DS-0/E0 DS-3 module: /E1 within a DS-3 channel; DS-0 and N x DS-0 within a channel OC-3/STM-1 module: /E1; DS-0 and N x DS-0 within a channel Support for unstructured AAL-1 CES /E1 module: /E1; end-to-end /E1 clear channel DS-3 module: /E1 and DS-3; end-to-end (/E1 or DS-3) clear channel OC-3/STM-1 module: /E1; end-to-end /E1 clear channel Management support via Web or command line interface (CLI), as well as via Ericsson ServiceOn Data network management system, which is based on standard Management Information Bases (MIBs) Support for ATM PVC and smart PVC (SPVC) connections at the DS-0 level Support for synchronous residual time stamp (SRTS) at the /E1 level Statistics collection and monitoring Network-level and module-level loopbacks for diagnostic purposes Alarm history and reports Capability to interwork with one another as well as other Ericsson CEM products Capability to interwork with other vendors MFA Forum CES 2.0 standard based products Channelized /E1 CEM network module Supported natively on the BXR400 and BXR1600 switches 1/0 timeslot interchange provided via ATM s inherent ability to switch virtual circuits Maximum of 248 PVCs/SPVCs (8 x 31 E0s) Channelized DS-3 and OC-3/STM-1 CEM network modules Ability to implement a strategy for controlled migration of legacy services to multiservice networks 3/1/0 timeslot interchange provided via ATM s inherent ability to switch virtual circuits Maximum of 2,016 virtual circuits (3 x 28 x 24 DS-0s) Tributary monitor/status reports
