TECHNOLOGY- AGNOSTIC SMART HOME VIA THE HOME GATEWAY APPLICATION PLATFORM LUCA GIACOMELLO, TELECOM ITALIA CHAIRMAN OF HGI with the help of: DUNCAN BEES, CTO HGI RUTH WILSON, VICE- CHAIR OF HGI MARKETING GROUP 1
AGENDA Why smart home services now? Business evoluoon Smart home technologies: WHAN HGI requirements HGI Open PlaRorm 2.0 enabling sovware modularity Smart Home AbstracOon layer 2
3 BUSINESS EVOLUTION
WHY SMART HOME SERVICES NOW? Home Home AutomaOon Home AutomaOon Services AutomaOon Services Services Per- service PlaRorm Ordering Service control/scheduling Scheduling Remote monitoring Integrated Smart Home Services Common approach to smart home services PlaRorm delivered by BSP ApplicaOon can be delivered by partners Apps store service ordering GUI based service control/scheduling Remote monitoring User expecta+ons for control of smart home services, like all informa+on services, have shi6ed: - Be:er user interfaces (smart phone) - Access from anywhere (in home, out of home) - Easy service ordering 4
HGI S SMART HOME TASK FORCE IS WORKING ON IT Service Use Cases Home Energy Management; Alarms & Home Security Ambient Assisted Living Comfort & Home AutomaWon NG CommunicaWons & Media Re- DistribuWon FacilitaWng an Ecosystem Stakeholders BSP, device vendors, services providers, applicawon developers Dialogue with other SDOs Develop PLATFORM approach (Home Gateway + cloud) TEST specificawons 5
SMART HOME CONNECTIVITY TECHNOLOGIES 6
WIRELESS HOME AREA NETWORKS Issues for BSP in dealing mul3plicity of WHAN Support - BSP must select and support an interconnect technology Ecosystem - Does the selected technology support sufficient end devices? ApplicaWon Develop and Device SemanWcs - Independently specified semanocs of end devices. This makes cross- plarorm development difficult and may tend to lock- in to WHAN ecosystem Develop a single set of requirements for WHAN - Common things from operators Show the direcoon of the WHAN technologies developments- Cooperate with other SDOs 7 HGI approach
WIRELESS HOME AREA NETWORKS Application varies by providers Management Networking Wireless Target of the WHAN requirements Wireless Home Area Network: Technical Requirements ConfiguraWon & Management preconfigured devices easy setup/pairing & remote setup flexible problem resoluoon Security message integrity authenocaoon & encrypoon Performance delay stability/reliability coexistence with ISM channel selecoon coverage babery life 8
CURRENT STEPS ON WHAN ACTIVITIES HGI major Operators have discussed preliminary requirements for selecoon a WHAN interface suitable for smart home services The document RD039 has just been published by the HGI member companies, and reflects current views on detailed requirements for WHANs 9
SOFTWARE ARCHITECTURE: THE ENABLERS 10
HOME GATEWAY SW MODULARITY IS KEY The SoVware ExecuOon Environment framework provides key abributes to allow local applicaoons ModularisaOon Resource sharing Security Reuseability Flexibility Logging Life cycle management ConfiguraOon Management HGI results: Hardware and SoVware requirements for HG s Specific requirements for OSGi Test programme and test bundles 11
HGI S OPEN PLATFORM 2.0 A full suite of requirements tests for the Smart Home Gateway on software modularity/ OSGi/ JVM REQUIREMENTS, TEST PROGRAM, AND TEST CODE Test Event uses a remote server to download and automatically run OSGi test bundles by HGI Extension to Smart Home APIs in future Service Provider pre-qualification of vendor solutions HGI- RD048 published 12
SMART HOME ARCHITECTURE Home Gateway RP7 Remote Access Middlew are RP4 HOME GATEWAY Remote Access Agent RP1 requires a generic model of Smart Home devices. The SDT will provide such models in a plarorm independent way. App 1 RP1 AbstracOon Layer RP2 App N RP1 AbstracOon Layer Interface The local interface that applicaoons on the gateway use RP2 Device Driver Interface The interface to integrate HAN technologies RP4 Remote Interface The interface between an operator cloud plarorm and the gateway RP7 Cloud API The interface provided to third paroes from the operator cloud plarorm D1 D2 D3 Dx 13
14 SMART HOME ABSTRACTION LAYER
15 GOALS OF THE SMART HOME ABSTRACTION LAYER Provide unified APIs for applicaoon developers to command, control and query home appliances Independence of underlying HAN technologies so that an applicaoon developer doesn t need to know anything about Zigbee, Z- Wave, wireless m- bus etc. Enable applicaoons to be portable across different HGI compliant devices Enable extendibility of the system with addioonal HAN technology support without service interrupoon ApplicaOons should be able to use a pass- through mechanism to use technology- specific funcoons
SMART HOME DEVICE TEMPLATE (SDT) Issues related to device descrip3on Common kinds of commands require some common translaoon from one system to another therefore need Device DescripOons Example: temperature sensor must be described in the same way independently from the technology and commands sent to it by the app must be used for all possible implementaoons of that device XML is a very flexible way to describe devices, their features, their senngs, etc. But XML is so flexible, some limits ( Template ) so various sovware can interpret it reliably XSD is the usual way to create such templates HGI approach HGI SDTemplate will have an informal (text) and a formal secoon (machine- readable, XML based) Template is intended to be filled in / instanoated for specific Appliances by domain specific organizaoons and vendors HGI defines the XSD template under Apache 2 rules 16
HOW APPLICATIONS CAN KNOW HOW TO INTERACT WITH REAL WORLD APPLIANCES OWL- based Ontology Washing Machine Cooking, Coffee,... Air CondiWoner Alarm Systems ehealth Blood Pressure e.g. hbp:// Appliance XSD Template (CollecWon) OpWon A OpWon n binary enum timestamp real Msg-string XSD component_1 XSD component_2 XML XML instance Washing Machine 17 Model real appliances so can be used in applicaoons
WORKING TOGETHER Joint work on SDT Map ontology template to OSGi technology ApplicaOon and plarorm Jointly approaching domain developers specific organizaoons (verocals) Joint work on SDT Map SDT to BBF TRs (if needed) Jointly approaching domain specific organizaoons (verocals) Operators OEMs and vendors Semiconductors 18 Edit and align a SDT Liaise SDT to domain specific organizaoons Operators OEMs and vendors Semiconductors Any unificaoon effort needs to accommodate the end to end value chain of Smart Home services to gain maximum impact Joint work on SDT Map SDT to specific technologies: ETSI M2M REST APIs EEBus APIs Jointly approaching domain specific organizaoons (verocals) HAN technology owners and vendors InstanOates SDT with their respecove device characterisocs InstanOates SDT with their respecove device characterisocs ApplicaOon and plarorm Developers OEMs and vendors ApplicaOon and plarorm Developers OEMs and vendors This figure is not at all comprehensive; it only shows a possible starting point.
