5G: on the Road to Convergence June, 2016
The wireless world until yesterday Different Strokes for Different Folks Different wireless networks have been designed to support different applications Wireless backhaul static, high throughput, fiber replacement, low latency, proprietary Wireless coverage mobile, ubiquitous, moderate throughput, moderate latency, 3GPP standards based Local area nomadic, very high capacity, high throughput, often IEEE standards based Sensor power efficient, low data rate, very low cost, latency indifferent, sometimes standards based 2
Mobile operator technology path 1G Basic analog voice 2.4 kbps 2G Designed for voice Improved coverage and capacity 64 kbps 3G Designed for voice with some data consideration First mobile broadband 2,000 kbps 1G 2G 3G 4G 4G Designed primarily for data IP based protocols 100,000 kbps - Focused only on the mobile coverage use case - Based on gradual (but useful!) improvements to two basic applications Voice More voice Some data Better data 3
So what about 5G? Let me guess. No, really. That s very interesting. More data, faster? Please go on. 4
Actually, no! Until now, the generations have been about more of the same, but better. 5G is the first multi service wireless architecture It is being designed to support requirements across multiple dimensions: - Super fast - Highly reliable - Nearly no latency - Very high quality 5
Why? Because everything is becoming wireless Connected devices (billions) Billion Connected Devices by billion 28 billion And mobile operators want to make sure that their next generation solution supports the impending Internet of Things M2M: non-cellular M2M and consumer electronics; cellular Consumer electronics; non-cellular PC/laptop/tablet Mobile phones Fixed phones Source: Ericsson Mobility Report, November
Requirements for 5G Support for this range of applications, with this diversity of requirements, will require network flexibility and the ability to optimize in multiple dimensions, unlike anything that currently exists in mobile networks Security Mobility Duration Reliability Latency Peak Data Rate App 1 App 2 App 3 App 4 7
Using magic technology? Again, no. 5G is not (just) a new technology 5G is a new solution, made up of a set of technologies Multiple technologies, all working together, to provide the experience required by the application and user 8
Using all kinds of spectrum The Age of Separation The Age of Aggregation The Age of Sharing The Age of Flexibility TV Whitespace, 3.5 GHz, SAS mmw: 28 GHz, 37 GHz, 39 GHz, GHz Licensed Spectrum Mobile Operators Licensed Spectrum Licensed Spectrum Flexible Spectrum Cable already the dominant carrier of wireless traffic. LTE-U, LAA, LWA, LWIP, MulteFire The technology debate obscures a bigger issue mobile operators and vendor community admit they can deliver services using unlicensed spectrum. PCAST finds that "the best way to increase capacity is to leverage new technologies that enable larger blocks of spectrum to be shared. Shared Spectrum Unlicensed Spectrum Everyone else (e.g. MSOs) Unlicensed Spectrum Unlicensed Spectrum A few licensed operators + Wi-Fi first and MVNOs Anyone can be a wireless operator! Anyone can be a wireless operator! 9
Implications for the mobile network 10
The core must become flexible Service Orchestration Of physical and virtual functions and networks allows the agility required to meet the varying 5G demands Network Function Virtualization Implement the core in software, allowing dynamic creation (and deletion) of capacity and functionality as it is required Software Defined Networking Allows dynamic allocation of services to match traffic requirements. E.g., a traffic flow that must be handled with low latency may be routed differently than one that requires, for example, high security Efficient but Rigid Core Networks In the long march from 1G to 4G, mobile operators have created highly functional, but highly static core networks STAR 11 T
Virtualization in place won t work To date, NFV 1.0 has been virtualization in place Take an existing network function, and virtualize it exactly where it sat in the existing data flow The demands of 5G, and the potential for greater convergence between access networks, requires NFV 2.0 Deconstructing and reconstructing network functions for greater efficiency and to eliminate network silos 12
The Core must be distributed Routing packets back to the core network will never support very low latency applications 13
Enabling network the edge: Private LTE + IoT example UTRAN / E UTRAN 3G Core LTE Core VoLTE HSS PCRF Enterprise Private Cloud MVNO / MVNE Edge Cloud Internet of Things Sensors WLC Casa Mobile Edge xcscf V2aaS SON/HeM S vmme vsae GW E LAN SeGW HeNB GW epdg Internet 14
The RAN must be adaptable Image source: Semafour Project, 2013 Self Management for Unified Heterogeneous Radio Access Networks 5G in mmw spectrum will deliver very high bandwidth, but is likely to require high numbers of small cells to provide coverage. 15
Cloud RAN and Virtual RAN Optimize the RAN: Reduce costs of much larger number of radios Centralize the BB to allow for intelligent, cross RAT optimization Provide flexible expansion for session and data capacity - Network resources allocation on demand based on realtime traffic needs 16
What s Missing? 17
The Fixed Network 5G is still going to require wires at some point 18
Bringing the Cable Network Along for the 5G Ride Distributed access is a first step NFV 2.0 in the access domain is the giant leap! 19
Thank you 20
