Broadband Roll Out in Europe The EU Objective: Universal Broadband Coverage with speeds at least 30 Mbps by 2020 Broadband Coverage of 50% of households with speeds at least 100 Mbps by % of EU households had access to fixed-line Broadband in % of EU households had access to NGA Broadband (VDSL, DOCSIS 3.0, FTTP) Source: Broadband Coverage in Europe 2016, a study by HIS Markit and Point Topic for the European Commission 5
FTTN Installation Exchange is distant from Customer Typical Broadband Speed is 1 25 Mbps 6
FTTN Installation Cabinet Replaces Pillar All IP Impractical for Australia Requires all services cut over at same time No POTS services after cut over 7
FTTN Installation Cabinet beside Pillar All IP Impractical for Australia Requires all services cut over at same time No POTS services after cut over 8
FTTN Installation in Australia 9
FTTN Installation in Australia Cabinet beside Pillar VDSL + POTS Existing Infrastructure 10
FTTN Installation in Australia Cabinet beside Pillar VDSL + POTS Install FTTN Cabinet (factory built and tested) Expand existing pillar to connect to FTTN 11
FTTN Installation in Australia Cabinet beside Pillar VDSL + POTS Install 2 Tie Cables 12
FTTN Installation in Australia Cabinet beside Pillar VDSL + POTS Tie Cables are terminated and Permanent jumper wiring is installed 13
FTTN Installation Issues Cable Testing is Essential 1. Tie Cables must be terminated and tested in the field: FTTN Cabinets are built and tested at the factory. Tie Cables can only be terminated and tested in the field. For a 384-port FTTN Cabinet 2 x 400-pair tie-cables are installed wires must be terminated and tested for Short-Circuits, Open-Circuits, Split Pairs, Transposed Pairs. 2. FTTN Cabinet Cross-Connect wiring must be terminated and tested: Cross-Connect wiring can only be completed and tested in the field. Cross-Connect jumpers cannot be wired until Tie Cables are terminated wires must be tested for Short-Circuits, Open-Circuits, Split Pairs, Transposed Pairs. 3. Incorrect Tie-Cable Terminations cause Delays and Service Failures: VDSL will not work over Split Pairs, Short Circuits or Open Circuits. Transposed Pairs mean the Customer is connected to the wrong port. 4. Incorrect Cable Records cause Delays: If an NBN Installer cannot find the correct O-pair he cannot connect the customer to the NBN. 14
FTTN Tie Cable Testing Developed specifically for nbn TM FTTN installation Rapidly checks Tie Cable terminations Provides audit trail for cable installation testing including GPS location TX150 Cable Mapper 15
FTTN Installation in Australia Cabinet beside Pillar VDSL + POTS Why have POTS? There are certain Special Services which will only operate on a POTS line The FTTN installation allows a customer to have both an NBN connection and a POTS service. Some Special Services using a POTS line will not operate once connected to FTTN (because of the VDSL splitter). 16
FTTN Installation in Australia Cabinet beside Pillar VDSL + POTS 18 months after installation: Most Customers connected to NBN (O-pair to C-pair) A few Customers have VDSL + POTS (Special Services) A small number have Special Services that cannot be connected 17
FTTN Installation in Australia Cabinet beside Pillar VDSL + POTS If POTS services were not necessary: Half the field installed infrastructure is not necessary Eventually the M-side copper cable could be removed 18
FTTdp Fibre to the Distribution Point (also known as FTTC or FTTK Fibre to the Curb or Kerb) Distribution Point Unit is usually placed just outside the customer s property The copper path is much shorter than FTTN Higher Broadband Speed is Possible using either VDSL or G.FAST No Mains Power is required at the DPU 19
FTTdp Installation Distribution Point Unit (DPU): Supplies up to 4 customers Powered by reverse feed from customers 20
FTTdp Installation Each DPU port is connected via a latching relay When unpowered the relay connects the customer to the exchange, the DSL port is unconnected It is not possible to have broadband and POTS simultaneously (unlike FTTN) 21
FTTdp Installation The Cable from the DPU is connected to the Customer Lead-in Cable 22
FTTdp Installation The Customer Lead-in Cable is cut and the outer sheath is stripped back before joining to the DPU Cable 23
FTTdp Installation The DPU Port Relay makes a through connection so the customer is still connected to the exchange until connecting to NBN 24
FTTdp Installation Once the Customer signs up to an RSP, a modem and Reverse Power-Feed Unit are connected to the Customer Line and the DPU relay operates connecting the Customer to NBN 25
FTTdp Installation Simple, Straight Forward Installation What can go wrong? Connect the Wrong Pair Connect Relay Back to Front 26
FTTdp Installation After Installation by the Contractor it is impossible to check wiring Cable Joint is sealed and must be remade if opened 27
FTTN and FTTdp Installation Conclusion FTTN is not as straight forward as you may expect Field wiring is extensive and needs to be checked thoroughly Although some checking could be improved most FTTN installations are well done FTTdp also has installation issues which will need to be addressed for a successful roll out 28
Customer Issues Even when FTTN and FTTdp are installed perfectly there can be problems One of the most common problems is Customer cabling Cable faults such as Low Insulation Resistance and Poor Joints can be a problem 29
Customer Issues Even when FTTN and FTTdp are installed perfectly there can be problems One of the most common problems is Customer cabling Cable faults such as Low Insulation Resistance and Poor Joints can be a problem Bridged Taps can cause very slow download speed It is not uncommon for houses to be wired for multiple telephones If not removed the Broadband signal sees a Bridged Tap A Bridged Tap (Multiple) causes excessive signal attenuation 30
