2 2 Overview Fibre optics - the future has begun. "fibre suisse" the cooperation model open to all. "fibre suisse" gives Lausanne a competitive advantage.
3 Fibre optics - the future has begun 3 In terms of fibre-optic penetration, Switzerland is already a world leader. Lausanne is pursuing a cuttingedge strategy with the TV network owned by Lausanne Industrial Services.
4 The first fibre-optic cable was laid in From 2000, the fibre-optic network has been brought closer to households , August: launches the expansion of fibre to the home in Zurich, Geneva and Basel 2006 lays fibre to the neighbourhood network (VDSL) 2005 launches a pilot project in Zurich involving 600 buildings From 2001 lays optical fibres during construction works : expansion mainly to Lausanne, Berne, Fribourg and St. Gallen

6 is already building a fibre-optic network in several towns and cities across Switzerland 6 Geneva Lausanne Basel Berne Fribourg Zurich Pfyn Our objectives: St.Gallen By the end of : 100,000* households connected * This objective may be reduced due to delays associated with the cooperation talks currently underway By the end of 2015: more than 1 million households connected (i.e. 1/3 of the population)
7 7 "fibre suisse" the cooperation model open to all "fibre suisse" supports the model favoured by cable operators and utility companies "fibre suisse" allows competition in networks and services
8 "fibre suisse" the basic principles of the model 8 Avoid unnecessary duplication. Duplication only in areas where innovation has to play a role to enable competition, resulting in value growth for the market and for the customer. A model which is open to all providers, whether or not they wish to invest in proprietary infrastructure.
9 The fibre-optic network: competition exists on two levels 9 Competition Level 3: Services Telephony / Internet / television Allows innovation in terms of applications Requires relatively low investment Level 2: Technology Technology for controlling the network and services Provides indispensable support for innovation in terms of performance, quality and security Requires limited investment Level 1: Cable infrastructure Domestic cabling, tube cables and cabling work Requires around 80% of investment
10 "fibre suisse" involves laying multi-fibre cable 10 Every supplier wishing to carry out construction according to this principle lays a multi-fibre cable. The free optical fibres can then be exchanged or bought by network operators who are interested in investing. Each network operator therefore uses its own technology on the fibreoptic network and is in competition with other network operators. The network operators offer to rent their fibre-optic cables to interested service providers who do not wish to invest in proprietary infrastructure.
11 "fibre suisse" in Lausanne: A joint pilot project to validate the model 11 The parties have signed a declaration of intent to jointly construct a multi-fibre network. The parties are implementing a pilot project in Chailly and Praz- Séchaud. At the same time, the parties are working on a common agreement for the deployment of fibre in all buildings in the city of Lausanne. The parties are also going to market their own services based on the deployed fibre-optic network; while selling the deployed optical fibres to operators without a proprietary infrastructure.
12 "fibre suisse" makes Lausanne one of the bestequipped cities in terms of communication technology 12 The partnership betwen the city of Lausanne and will provide faster coverage, which will be more beneficial to the city. A high level of dynamism for customers thanks to competition between cable operators and telecoms providers. An essential asset for the establishment of new companies.
