3 Black Hills State University is committed to serving its constituents with innovative technology, high-speed Internet access, and quality support. The campus is connected to the South Dakota s Research, Education, and Economical Development (REED) network. This provides our campus with an Internet2 connection at 1 gigabit (Gb) but could be upgraded to 10 Gb in the future. Our Internet1 connection provides the campus with 400 megabit (Mb). Our residence halls were upgraded from 100 Mb to a 500 Mb connection greatly enhancing the students living in the residence halls online experience. The following improvements are a testimony of our commitment to improve technology on campus: Over this past year we have replaced/upgraded 40 of the 90 high-speed network switches, 2 new wireless controllers and over 250 wireless access points. Wireless Internet is available throughout all campus buildings including residence halls. New redundant firewalls were installed that replaced six year old equipment. All campus buildings are connected into the campus network via a high speed fiber which will allow 1 Gb to 10 Gb speeds. There are over 120 servers on campus including 90 virtual servers. Two of the three academic computer labs and the campus library computers were recently migrated and upgraded to thin clients. We have 57 out of 59 classrooms equipped with technology to include instructor computers, projectors, internet connectivity, document cameras, etc. We recently implemented a new storage area network (SAN) that will host the virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) system.

5 OS_VII_2 Status of campus technology-discuss need an upgrades, costs. Dakota State University is the Information Technology campus for the State of South Dakota. As such, the university has made a significant investment into the technology of the campus and continues to budget a significant ongoing amount of funds to stay current. The following highlights some of the technology within the DSU campus: o o o o o All DSU classrooms are smart classrooms contain wireless and wired access to the projection system Entire campus, which includes the Football/Track Stadium, Fieldhouse gymnasium, Community Center, and residence halls have wireless infrastructure 90% of the classroom seats have power; seats in large classroom auditoriums also have wired network access to the seat Mobile computing initiative for all on-campus students enrolled in 6+ credits in which students receive a tablet computer; students enrolled in fewer credits or off campus can opt in to the program Mobile computing initiative: pen-enabled tablet program for incoming students; juniors have option of tablet or MAC DSU budgets a significant portion of annual operating funds and capital improvement dollars to maintain current technology. This includes funds to purchase software licenses for students to utilize and learn what is utilized in their various technology, business, or education fields. It also includes dollars to upgrade various high end computing labs and refresh the mobile computing devices provided to students. Technology infrastructure on campus including the network is reviewed annually to ensure it is meeting the needs of the DSU students and faculty.

7 NSU Technology Investment July 14, 2015 NSU currently receives their campus and residence hall bandwidth through the SD Bureau of Information and Telecommunications. The Gigabit and 10-Gigabit backbone supplying inter-building connectivity consists of multi-mode and single-mode fiber-optic cabling. Copper wiring from the individual building wiring closets to the desktops is constructed with category 5 (cat-5), enhanced category 5 (cat-5e) or category 6 (cat-6) UTP cabling. Wide area connection (WAN) is made possible through a 260 Mbps connection for Internet 1. In August 2015, that connection will increase to 400 Mbps. NSU is connected to the Research, Education, and Economic Development (REED) high speed research network, the Northern Tier research network, and Internet 2. NSU began deploying a/b/g/n wireless connectivity in With the onset of campus-wide mobile learning, the entire campus, including outside commons areas and residence halls, are completely wireless. NSU currently has 9 full videoconference studios, 4 micro-studios, 1 public studio, and 1 mobile unit. 6 of the full studios and 3 of the micro-studios are designed for high school course delivery. 3 full studios, 1 micro-studio, and 1 mobile unit are designated for university course delivery. NSU has one public videoconference studio that is available to the general public and the university. NSU also recently installed and configured an Access Grid room that is used for research purposes, videoconferencing, and classes. The NSU campus boasts more than sixty campus classrooms and labs with complete smart podiums and multimedia projection equipment. These classrooms have an LCD projector, screen or large screen TV and a multimedia teaching podium equipped a desktop pc, laptop connectors, document camera, LCD projector and VHS/DVD player. The campus also provides three general-use computer labs, seven discipline-specific computer labs and one testing computer lab. NSU s commitment to technology is demonstrated by its historical investments. In fiscal year 2015, NSU invested $982,354 into campus technologies. For the previous fiscal years, 2010 through 2014, the average technology investment exceeded $905,000. NSU will continue to devote significant resources toward maintenance and technology upgrades as well as new technology initiatives.

9 Networking Local Area Network Mixed fiber infrastructure with a 5 year plan to replace with single-mode higher capacity fiber, and installing the latest CAT cabling (6a currently) in all new facilities to handle the build out of our 10 gigabit infrastructure. All core and sub-core switching is upgrade to 10 gigabit with the capacity to go to single 40 gigabit to each sub-core setting the stage for 100 gigabit by Wireless Since the build out of our wireless infrastructure 2009 to include all academic classrooms and teaching labs, as well as, learning commons on campus we upgraded those original installs to the latest version that supports one gigabit connectivity. With the upgrade we redeployed the original devices into the older resident halls to over subscribe the capacity in those buildings. In the newest halls we installed the gigabit access points to allow for future growth in those facilities. Server Farm.. We recently completed an upgrade to the electrical, cooling, lighting, UPS, generators, and LAN core - which will allow for all research servers to be connected at a native 10 gigabit to the fiber backbone. Along with this upgrade, the SAN was upgraded, and we now have across our various systems the capability of storing one petabyte of information. We are continuing our move to virtualizing servers, applications, and desktops. This effort supports the build out of our local cloud, and helps support outsourcing to the bigger cloud, when strategic. Research Computing HPC We completed the purchase of our third Beowulf research cluster. We have also added multiple flavors of HPC to sever a wider array of researchers especially are growing group of Bio Genomics faculty. All this helps in their research to find new cancer drugs as well as other pharmaceuticals. It also provides students the opportunity to work on real world issues with the latest technology. Classrooms Smart Classrooms.. Within the last 4 years, we have upgrade our classroom technologies in 80 rooms, and will add more in the coming years. A five year plan of classroom upgrades has been completed and funds identified to develop five different types of classroom environments to keep us in step with changing pedagogy as we move forward. Bandwidth Research bandwidth.. Four years ago we went from (1) one 20-megabit circuit to (1) one 1-gigabit circuit currently we have are running (1) one 10-gigabit circuit with the potential for adding (4) more 10-gigabit circuits. Commodity bandwidth.. On the commodity internet side we started out with (1) one 20-megabit circuit and increased it to (1) one 90- megabit circuits four years ago. Last year we had 900-megabit circuit available to the students now we increased to 1.2gigabit with the capacity to grow to ten gigabit.

USD is connected to the REED Network, with Internet 2 bandwidth of 10 Gigabits/second. Wireless access is available in all classrooms, residence halls, and public areas. The University s students have access to 48 labs housing a total of 817 computers. There are 98 smart classrooms in 19 buildings, 31 equipped with Turning Point technology. 965 students including those living in Residence Halls and students using the hard-wired network in academic buildings, have a PC connected to the U s high-speed network. 7,642 students, faculty & staff connected laptops to the USD s wireless network through the first 6 weeks of classes as compared to 6,877 last year. 3,424 mobile devices connected to the wireless network from August, 2012 through January, USD provided 16 video conference rooms to deliver 41 distance education courses from January, 2012, through December, USD s High Performance Computing Cluster 296 processing cores 17TB of shared network storage Processed an average of 141 compute jobs/day Cluster utilization increased 40% from : USD offers Desire2Learn web-based course components including: 1,159 active courses The ITS Help Desk received 39,605 requests for assistance in FY2012.
