JTRS Network Emulator (JNE): Overview and Use Cases Presentation at JSTeF March 14-17, 2011 Sheetal Doshi, Ph.D. Project Lead, JTRS Network Emulator Scalable Network Technologies, Los Angeles CA 1
JTRS Network Emulator Overview JTRS Network Emulator Objective: Develop a framework for emulation of JTRS networks that connects to live radios, applications, network management, or network monitoring software so that: A purely virtual network behaves like a live JTRS network, and A small scale live JTRS network can be extended to behave like a larger network Funded under a Phase 2.5 SBIR from JPEO NED, Operational Test Command (OTC), and PEO-I BCTM TPOC: Mr. Joe Oleksa, JTRS NED Is it Live or is it JNE 2
Core Technology: Software Virtual Networks (SVN) SVN Simulated environment: channel, terrain, weather, mobility Emulated networks: communications, waveforms, Live Interactions: humans, devices, applications, With real-time synchronization Operating seamlessly in a single framework ISR Feed Hardware- In-The-Loop Interface UAS Constructive Force Representation Interoperability Interface C2 Video System-In Simulated The-Loop Network Interface Architecture Model execution on multi-core parallel architectures Maintain real-time speed and emulation fidelity as model complexity increases Accurate Replicas Physical networks and models virtually indistinguishable Embeddable in existing test, wargaming, analysis tools; no more perfect comms Application Centric GCCS, Blue Force Tracker (BFT), network manager, apps Scalability Connect large emulated nets with smaller live nets Life Cycle Support From design, analysis, test, train to deployment 3
JTRS Network Emulator Architecture The Communication Effects Server (CES) provides waveform models at a fidelity comparable to actual waveform code and scalable to large networks. JNE provides modular interfaces for CES to interoperate with live radios, real apps (eg, chat), real monitoring tools (e.g. Wireshark) and real network managers (eg JWNM). The technology R&D to enable this -- real-time emulation of radios -- was developed under a JPEO funded SBIR Phase 2 project with Scalable Network Technologies. 4
High Fidelity Models in JNE WNW 4.0 Full representation of the WNW waveform stack MITRE performed functionality assessment of model SRW 1.0C Full representation of SRW waveform stack Legacy Radios: SINCGARS, EPLRS, Link-16, Link-11 based on official specifications Wireless Channel: Effects due to terrain Urban Propagation Interference, Fading Effects Ongoing, independent V&V by CERDEC & MITRE 5
JNE interfaces to Live GMRs Red Side Interface Directly stimulates live Network Under Test (NUT) with data and Red side Layer 3 control traffic as it would be injected from additional live subnets at the red side Successfully deployed in SIT Part 2 at Ft Huachuca in Aug, 2010 Black side interface Directly stimulates live NUT with realistic data and Layer 3 control traffic as it would be injected from additional live subnets connected at the black side Successfully tested using OCRs running WNW 4.0 in the JITC lab at SSC-PAC 6
JNE Interfaces to Test Tools and Tactical Applications Live, virtual or constructive versions of tactical applications can be made to run on top of JNE emulated radios ( WNW, SRW, Legacy ) to assess the performance of the actual applications over a mix of scenarios ( fixed, mobile, urban, etc..) Interface to applications is application-agnostic and plug and play in most cases JNE has been demonstrated with the following tactical applications: FBCB2 (Force XXI Battle Command Brigade and Below), which is used by commanders to track friendly and hostile forces on the battlefield Role Player Work Station (RPWS) 7 OneSAF C2 Adapter
JNE Interface to JTRS Network Managers Comm Plan JNE running WNW scenario Status and Control Reports Re-configuration Node Mobility Terrain RMDS Directory JWNM Ethernet Link JNE WNW Model Configuration Wizard RMDS= Radio Mission Data Set, provides the radio/waveform configuration settings for live WNW radios JNE WNW Model Config Files Included in scenario config file Preset 0 WNW Configuration Preset 1 WNW Configuration Preset N WNW Configuration Offered Load specs Statistics Collection Options 8
JNE Use Cases JNE can be employed in the following areas as digital substitutes for live JTRS radios: Test and Evaluation Operational Testing of JTRS Radios Development Testing of JTRS Products (Network Managers, Applications being built to run on the radios, Analysis tools..) Operation Planning Assist in coming up with best radio settings, network planning and optimization, validate radio settings Training Training on JTRS radio technology and JTRS concepts 9
JNE Use Case: Operational Testing Schematic for Battle Command Network Integration & simulation (BCNIS) Final Operational Capability (FOC) intended for use in GMR MOTE Exchange WNW Control Messages to extend scale of live WNW network Augment size of force in constructive environment to make up for lack of live radios and provide realistic communication effects and network loading at Larger Scale 10
Proof Point: JNE Use in GMR SIT Part 2 JNE successfully used in GMR SIT Part 2 at Ft Huachuca: August/ Sept 2010 Realistic stimulation of the live GMR radio network at Layer 3 Red side Live C2/SA applications connected to the constructive network Control traffic and Data traffic injection into the live network under test based on realistic communication effects in the constructive network 11
JNE Use Case: Applications Testing Problem: Testing of applications that will run on JTRS networks How can comprehensive testing of applications be done so that it meets varied set of operational requirements? Solution: JNE provides digital doubles of JTRS networks for Application Testing Ability to test in diverse operational contexts (mobility, scale, high speed entry and exit from network, urban terrain..) Can identify shortcomings early in application development cycle Live Application Destinations Live Application Sources JNE server running network emulation scenario 12
JNE Use Case: Net Manager Testing Problem: JTRS Network Management software testing How can comprehensive testing of JTRS Net Manager software be done so that it meets varied set of operational requirements? Solution: JNE provides digital doubles of JTRS networks for net manager Testing Ability to test in diverse operational contexts (mobility, scale, high speed entry and exit from network, urban terrain..) Can test emerging Network Management capabilities in an iterative manner while running live applications in JNE Can identify design shortcomings early in system development cycle Machine running the live JTRS Network Management Software to be tested JNE Server running test scenario 13
JNE Use Case: Operations Planning Problem: Validate RMDS Configurations Will the network configuration provide robust connectivity for given operational context/mission? Solution: JNE simulated network can be configured from the RMDS files, used to simulate the mission, & analyze performance gaps (if any) Optimizing radio settings Can be used to optimize radio settings by operational users for specific mission (mobility, terrain, application mix, robustness, ) Scalability JNE can be used to validate RMDS settings for small scale (tens) to large scale (hundreds +) network deployment sizes 14
JNE Use Case: Signal Officer and Operator Training for Net Managers Problem: Effectively train large numbers of Signal Officers to operate and manage JTRS networks under dynamic conditions What if I lose node 23?
