1 Hardware Announcement April 12, 2005 Cisco Systems Fiber Intelligent Gigabit Ethernet Switch Module for IBM expands network interconnect options Overview The Cisco Fiber IGESM is based on the hardware and software of the existing Cisco IGESM. The Cisco Fiber IGESM features four SFP module slots that accept Cisco Gigabit SFP Modules. The Cisco Fiber IGESM, like the existing Cisco IGESM, provides layer 2 Ethernet switching functions for the IBM. Up to four Cisco SX Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP) modules are supported. SFPs are hot-swappable input/output devices that plug into any of the four external Gigabit Ethernet SFP module slots, linking the port with the network. The switch module is managed via two internal 100 Mbps ports for communication to the management module. It provides security for ports so that traffic can be limited to media access control (MAC) addresses allowed to access only specific ports (IGMP snooping). Up to four Cisco Systems Fiber IGESM can reside in the switch module bays of the chassis. The modules can be hot-plugged into the without disrupting normal operations. The switch connects to the server blades via the 14 internal GbE interfaces (server ports) over the mid-plane. A Web-based or Telnet-based interface is available for diagnostics and direct communication between the Cisco Systems IGESM and the Management Module. It also supports the CiscoWorks management applications. 2 Description This Cisco Systems Fiber Intelligent Gigabit Ethernet Switch Module provides layer 2 Ethernet switching functions for the IBM eserver server chassis. Additionally, it provides security for ports so that traffic can be limited to MAC addresses allowed to access only specific ports (IGMP snooping). Port features Four SFP module slots for making 1000BASE-SX connections to backbones, end stations, or servers (an SFP module slot supports CISCO SFP P/N GLC-SX-MM=, purchased separately) Fourteen internal full-duplex Gb ports, one connected to each of the blade servers in the Two internal full-duplex 10/100 Mbps ports connected to the management module Performance features IEEE 802.3x flow control on Gigabit Ethernet ports in full-duplex. Fast EtherChannel and Gigabit EtherChannel enhanced fault tolerance. Support for standard frame sizes from 64 to 1,530 bytes. Support for jumbo frames up to 9,000 bytes. Support for trunk failover coupled with NIC teaming helps to restore data communication during link failure. Per-port storm control for preventing degrading overall system. Port aggregation protocol (PAgP) and link aggregation control protocol (LACP) for automatic creation of EtherChannel links. Internet group management protocol (IGMP) snooping support to limit flooding of IP multicast traffic. Multicast VLAN registration (MVR) to continuously send multicast streams in a multicast VLAN while isolating the streams from subscriber VLANs for bandwidth and security. Source IP and Destination IP Load Balancing. IGMP filtering for controlling the set of multicast groups to which hosts on a switch port can belong. Protected port (private VLAN edge port) option for restricting the forwarding of traffic to designated ports on the same switch. Dynamic address learning for enhanced security. Manageability features Address resolution protocol (ARP) for identifying a switch through its IP address and its corresponding MAC address Cisco discovery protocol (CDP) versions 1 and 2 for network topology Network time protocol (NTP) for providing a consistent timestamp Directed unicast requests to a trivial file transfer protocol (TFTP) server for obtaining software upgrades from a TFTP server Default configuration storage in flash memory to enable connecting the switch and forwarding traffic with minimal user intervention In-band management access through an expresso Web-interface session In-band management access through up to 16 simultaneous Telnet connections for multiple command-line interface (CLI)-based sessions In-band management access through up to five simultaneous, encrypted shell (SSH) connections using rich security for multiple CLI-based sessions In-band management access through SNMP versions 1, 2c, and 3 Redundancy features HSRP for command-switch redundancy UniDirectional link detection (UDLD) on all Ethernet ports for faults IEEE 802.1D Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) for redundant backbone connections and loop-free networks IEEE 802.1s multiple STP (MSTP) for grouping VLANs into a spanning-tree instance, and provided for multiple forwarding paths IEEE 802.1w rapid STP (RSTP) for rapid convergence of the spanning tree by immediately transitioning root and designated ports Optional spanning-tree features available in the PVST+, rapid PVST+, and MSTP modes VLAN support The switch supports 250 port-based VLANs for assigning users to VLANs. The switch supports up to 4094 VLAN IDs to allow service provider networks to support the number of VLANs allowed by IEEE 802.1Q standard. IEEE 802.1Q trunking protocol on all ports for network moves, adds and changes; management and control of broadcast and multicast traffic. VLAN membership policy server (VMPS) for dynamic VLAN membership. VLAN trunking protocol (VTP) pruning for reducing network traffic by restricting flooded traffic to links destined for stations. Dynamic trunking protocol (DTP) for negotiating trunking on a link between two devices to be used. Voice VLAN for creating subnets for voice traffic from Cisco IP phone. VLAN minimization to reduce the risk of spanning-tree loops or storms by allowing VLAN 1 to be disabled on any individual VLAN trunk link. Security features Bridge protocol data unit (BPDU) guard for shutting down a fast-configured port when an invalid configuration occurs Protected port option for restricting the forwarding of traffic to designated ports on the same switch Password-protected access (read-only and write-only access) to management interfaces (expresso and CLI) for protection against unauthorized configuration changes
