It does not require any configuration and so is very easy to use. Pass-thru modules are I/O options that can be used for direct connections of blade ports to the external infrastructure devices such as network switches. The Pass-thru module is almost like a traditional network patch-panel it routes internal blade ports to outside the BladeCenter. Current modules (used in non-high-speed bays) use a design that links several internal blade ports to a single external port on pass-thru module, so specific "hydra" or "octopus" pass-thru cables have to be used with pass-thru modules to provide standard external connections (one connector per each blade port). The two types of standard pass-thru modules are Copper Pass-thru Module (CPM) and Optical Pass-thru module (OPM). Both of them are capable of carrying Ethernet signals. ICPM provides an unconfigured network connection that enables the blade servers in the BladeCenter unit to connect to an existing network infrastructure. No configuration of the copper pass-thru module is required. The ICPM provides a single connection from each blade to one RJ-45 connector, which can go directly to an external switch or patch panel from each of the 14 blades in the chassis to an RJ-45 plus for connection. 2 If you install the ICPM in bay 1 of the chassis, it will route all Ethernet signals from controller 1 in each blade. Similarly, if you put an ICPM in bay 2, it will route all Ethernet controller 2 signals from each blade server. The ICPM has additional benefits such as support for SoL (Serial-over-LAN), Concurrent KVM (ckvm), and security and statistics functionality all through the existing BladeCenter Advanced Management Module GUI. These new BladeCenter options provide additional capabilities and function, allowing you to meet the needs of today's enterprise server applications. The BladeCenter, also known as the BladeCenter chassis, supports installation of I/O modules that enable it to communicate with your external resources. Several types of I/O modules are available, each specifically designed to communicate with a specific environment. The IBM eserver BladeCenter Copper Pass-thru Module, also called an I/O module, provides a network connection that enables the blade servers in the BladeCenter unit to connect to an existing 100 Mb or Gigabit Ethernet network infrastructure. No configuration of the copper pass-thru module is required. Blade servers communicate with the copper pass-thru module using their integrated Ethernet controllers or through an optional blade server Ethernet expansion card. Ethernet controllers integrated on the blade server system board are connected to I/O-module bay 1 and bay 2. 3 I/O expansion card is connected to multiple I/O module bays. The Copper Pass-thru module allows customers who have existing external Gigabit Ethernet switch ports available to utilize those ports. The Copper Pass-thru allows customers with existing ports to avoid purchasing additional integrated Gigabit Ethernet switches when they are not needed, providing a low-cost connection to existing 100 Mb and Gigabit Ethernet environments. Performance, reliability, and expansion capabilities were key considerations in the design of the Intelligent Copper Pass-thru Module for IBM BladeCenter. It will provide an unswitched/unblocked network connection to each blade server. This option works with Gigabit Ethernet networks and now supports 100 Mb or Gb networks. This option requires at least one optional BladeCenter Copper Pass-thru Module cable to connect to your existing Gigabit Ethernet network infrastructure.
