The MSIM, along with new Combination Form Factor (CFF) Expansion Cards, enables simultaneous I/O connections to standard switch modules in both the standard and high-speed I/O module bays. The MSIM is a double-high mechanical enclosure for the BladeCenter H and can be inserted into bays 7 and 8 or 9 and 10 to provide support for up to two standard I/O switch modules per MSIM. 2 enclosure contains two standard I/O module bays that provide connectivity of standard I/O switch modules in the high-speed bays to the blade servers. The MSIM supports Ethernet, Fibre Channel, and pass-thru I/O modules. The new CFF Expansion Cards fit on the blade server to allow connectivity to both standard and high-speed switch module bays at the same time. These new Expansion Cards provide new flexibility for connecting the blade server to the vertically oriented standard I/O module bays 3 and 4 (in BladeCenter H), as well as to the horizontally oriented module in bays 7 and 8 or 9 and 10. 3 Each IBM BladeCenter server blade has the optional capability of accommodating one or more I/O expansion cards to provide redundant connections to the BladeCenter switch modules. The routing of the expansion card's two ports occurs through the BladeCenter's midplane to the I/O modules. One port from the expansion card is wired via the midplane to one I/O module bay, while the other port is wired to a second I/O module bay to provide redundancy against a single point of failure. The QLogic Ethernet and 4Gb FC Expansion Card is used in conjunction with the Multi-Switch Interconnect Module, and requires that an Ethernet capable I/O module is installed in the left position of the Multi-Switch Interconnect Module, and a Fibre Channel capable I/O module installed in the right position of the Multi-Switch Interconnect Module. Both switches do not need to be resident at the same time since the Fibre Channel and Ethernet networks are separate and distinct. Two versions of the new form factor expansion cards will be available. The CFFv (vertical/standard) version connects to the blade server PCI-X bus to provide I/O connections to the standard switch bays 3 and 4. The CFFh (horizontal/high speed) version connects to the blade server PCI-Express bus in order to provide I/O connections to the high-speed switch modules in bays 7 through 10.
