IS10010 Exporter Plus Reliable HD Protocol Setup INFORMATION SHEET 1 INTRODUCTION Nautel s Reliable HD Transport Protocol is a standalone application designed to run on a Nautel Exporter Plus. The protocol introduces buffering, smoothing and data re-transmission capability to the standard HD Radio E2X link. These features can reduce the amount of bandwidth required to reliably send HD data from an Exporter Plus to an exciter, while at the same time greatly improving the robustness of the link. The risk of dead air is dramatically reduced. This document describes how to install and configure the reliable HD protocol on the Exporter Plus. All versions of Exporter Plus use a TFTP Ethernet software installation system. The installation procedure for the Reliable HD software is identical to the procedure for upgrading the regular software in an Exporter Plus. 2 INSTALLING SOFTWARE Exporter Plus software is easy to update using the pages available in the UI s MAINTENANCE menu. An update can be performed over an Ethernet connection using TFTP. This requires that a TFTP server be installed on the same Ethernet subnet as the Exporter Plus. Various TFTP server implementations are available for Windows. SolarWinds Network Management provides a free TFTP server at: Refer to your TFTP server s software package for specific installation instructions. TFTP servers require a designated folder to act as the TFTP server s root directory (e.g., C:/TFTP- Root). Make sure that the TFTP server is configured to both receive and transmit files to avoid TFTP timeout conditions. NOTE: The following procedure shuts down the Exporter Plus software. HD Radio transmission is disabled during this procedure. (a) Connect the Windows PC with the TFTP server to the Ethernet and configure its IP address according to your Exporter Plus subnet. Verify the connection by pinging the Exporter Plus IP address. (b) Place the software update file in the root directory of the TFTP server. (c) From the Edit Settings -> Maintenance menu s Update File screen (see Figure 1), enter the software update file name, including its file extension. (d) From the the Edit Settings -> Maintenance menu s Update Host IP screen (see Figure 2), enter the IP address of the computer that is running the TFTP server. _TFTP_Server/ Exporter Plus Reliable HD Protocol Setup Page 1 IS10010 Issue 1.0
Figure 1: Update File Screen 3 CONFIGURING THE RELIABLE HD TRANSPORT PROTOCOL The reliable HD Transport Protocol is configured through an SSH connection to the Exporter Plus. Configure as follows: (a) Connect to the Exporter Plus with an SSH client such as PuTTY (see example in Figure 4). (b) Log into the Exporter Plus: Figure 2: Update Host IP Screen (e) Select Run SW Update from the MAINTENANCE menu to proceed with the update. The UI will indicate the progress of the update and whether or not the file transfer and decompression is successful. You can review the installation log on the UI. Username: root Password: password (c) At the prompt in the screen shown in Figure 5, enter the command e2xconfig. The screen in Figure 6 should be displayed. (f) Select System Restart from the MAINTENANCE menu to restart the Exporter Plus and finalize the update. 2 CONFIGURING EXPORTER PLUS Configure the Exporter Plus configured to internally loop-back its outgoing Ethernet as follows. (a) Enter the Edit Settings -> Exciter Configuration menu s Destination IP Address screen (see Figure 3). Figure 3: IP Config Screen (b) Change the IP address to match that of either ETH0 or ETH1. Figure 4: SSH Client Screen (PuTTY shown) Page 2 Issue 1.0 Exporter Plus Reliable HD Protocol Setup IS10010
Figure 5: Command Prompt Screen Figure 6: E2X Encapsulation Configurator screen NOTE The following paragraphs describe the setup for each of the (2) through (9) options selected in Figure 6. No changes made through the E2X configurator will take effect until the changes are saved (9) and the exporter GUI is restarted. Exporter Plus Reliable HD Protocol Setup Page 3 IS10010 Issue 1.0
(2) Show/Select Exgine Destination: See Figure 7. Displays all configured Exgine destinations (up to 16) and allows a particular destination to be selected for editing [see paragraph (3)]. (3) Enter Exgine IP Address: See Figure 8. The E2X configuration module does not receive the Exgine IP address from the Exporter Plus UI, so the Exgine IP address must be re-entered here. When selecting broadcast mode, the IP address will be configured as In this case (for ETH0 only) the E2X encapsulation software will detect the Exporter Plus IP address and netmask and broadcast on the Exporter Plus subnet only. Broadcast mode may be used to direct a single stream to multiple Exgine destinations on the same LAN network as in a main/standby exciter configuration. In most cases, enter the IP address of the destination Exgine. To direct E2X traffic to multiple Exgines, independent Exgine IP addresses may be configured. This causes copies of the same packet stream to be sent to multiple destinations across multiple networks. Figure 7: Show/Select Exgine Destination screen Figure 8: Configuring Exgine IP Address screen Page 4 Issue 1.0 Exporter Plus Reliable HD Protocol Setup IS10010
(4) Enter Exgine Ethernet MAC Address: See Figure 9. The Exgine Ethernet MAC address is required when the address resolution protocol cannot reach or return from Exgine, such as in the case of a unidirectional STL. This will add a static entry to the exporter's address table. Using a MAC address of 00:00:00:00:00:00 ensures that no static entry is made in the address table for exgine's IP address. When using broadcast mode, the MAC address must be cleared. (5) Set E2X Encapsulation Port Numbers: It is not expected that these port numbers need to change unless there is a port conflict in the network. The default settings are: Data plane port: 3632 Control plane master port: 3630 Control plane slave port: 3631 Figure 9: Configuring Exgine MAC Address Screen Exporter Plus Reliable HD Protocol Setup Page 5 IS10010 Issue 1.0
(6) Set Link Bandwidth: E2X encapsulation segment scheduling is controlled by total link bandwidth and main bandwidth. The total link bandwidth (see Figure 10) allocated to this E2X stream determines the maximum number of data segments that can be sent in a period of time and determines when the segments are scheduled to be transmitted. This parameter should not exceed the available bandwidth across the link to avoid congestion across the link. The main bandwidth parameter (see Figure 11) indicates how much bandwidth is allocated to the actual data stream without retransmissions. This parameter smoothes out the instantaneous bandwidth requirements inherent in the E2X data stream, but should always be greater than the average E2X data stream throughput requirements. It is not expected that this parameter needs to be changed from its default of 150 kbps. Figure 10: Setting Total Link Bandwidth Screen Figure 11: Setting Main Bandwidth Screen Page 6 Issue 1.0 Exporter Plus Reliable HD Protocol Setup IS10010
(7) Enable/Disable Data Retransmissions: There may be a few cases where it is undesirable for the exporter to react to retransmission requests coming from Exgine. In these cases, disable data retransmission. In all other cases, leave data retransmissions enabled. (8) Enable/Disable Time Scheduling: This option is enabled by default. Contact Nautel before attempting to change (disable) this option. (9) Save E2X Configuration: See Figure 12. All configuration changes are only made in memory until they are committed to the hard drive by saving the configuration. If you do not want to save the configuration, simply exit the Configurator, which will revert all changes. Perform a system restart on the Exporter Plus to allow saved parameters to take effect.
