OMEGA FP7 project Technologies convergence in Gbps Home Networks Andreas Foglar 1, Martial Bellec 2, Jean-Philippe Javaudin 2, Pierre Jaffré 2 1 Lantiq Deutschland 2 Orange Labs R&D, France Telecom 1
The OMEGA project Started 01 January 2008, Ends 31 December 2010 Funded by European Commission FP7 programme 21 partners from industry and academia 8 Workpackages Scenarios, services and techno economics Connectivities Radio communications, Wifi, UWB, 60 GHz (PHY,, Xlayer) Powerline communications (PLY, ) Wireless Optics, visible light & Infra-Red (PHY, ) Inter- convergence layer Architecture security continuity of services Demonstration Dissemination, Training & Standardisation Project website Contact OMEGA info@ict-omega.eu 2
Omega Project scope Core scope Network project Connectivities at Gbps Convergence at layer 2.5 Network architecture and security Demonstration of the concept and dissemination Perimeter Use of UPnP for QoS Device management (local/remote) Continuity with access networks 3G/4G, Optical access networks Services Work on the impact of the introduction of new services on HN architecture 3
OMEGA driving postulates The final link of the in-house communication will be preferably wireless. The Gbps wireless is not QoS acceptable within more than one room. Electrical power plugs is the easiest medium term way to bring wire line connectivity in Europe. IP-layer cannot manage PHY impairments to QoS acceptance while still being the de facto standard for the connected home. OMEGA network and devices have to be green 4
Key requirements : Race to Gbps 2 major trends over the last decades: i. media richness of the services available to the end consumer has a constant increase rate of about 8% per year for the last century. need of Ultra BroadBand (Gbps) at home to handle future services such as 3D. ii. bandwidth ratio between indoors and access ranges from 5 to 10. The rolled out FTTH access is 100 Mbps symmetric implies thus Gbps indoors. major bottleneck risk that the home network jeopardizes the Quality of Experience of the future services. 5
Key Requirements: Compatibility Compatibility with future access networks Continuity must exist among these networks increase of data rates in the access (optical fibre) packet oriented handling of the QoS Support of legacy devices without degradation Some the terminals may be OMEGA end devices The other terminals are legacy devices may be compatible with the OMEGA technologies WiFi n, HD PLC, UWB, optical wireless, radio at 60 GHz may be not compatible with them Compatibility with future middleware Several middleware solutions already exists but there are not interoperable UPnP/DLNA, DPWS, IGRS, BONJOUR, HAVI 6
Challenge : Connectivity Convergence and Architecture 1 4 Network Use cases : 0-Legacy Upward OK 1-PLTwifi Redundanc WHDMI WiFi 5GHz OR PLT 2 nd SetTop Box 3 Plastic Fiber Extender WiFi 5GHz OR PLT 2- Load balancing 3-Handovers 4-Coverage extension 0 HDMI Set Top Box 10.5 HD HD Channel Channel 0.5 HD Channel Ethernet 2 1 HD Channel "2.5 Layer Inter-" concept Access "Compatible with Both Power Lines OR Fiber BackBone Livebox 7
Convergent Home Network Tough Questions UPnP and SIP interworking : QoS (re)negociation and device management Trusted Continuity of the access networks Inter Access networks handovers. Security Topology : discovery data models Hybridization of technology Metrics compute and alignment Path selection Load balancing Low cost Standardised Open source 8
The inter- concept A global ressource manager over the heterogeneous technologies Layer 2 Technology independent Role of adapter between logical links and physical links QoS Contr rol Network Protocol (IP)Layer Interface with Network Protocol Layer Path Select tion Application Layer Middleware Layer Technolog gy Handove er Inter- Layer technology independent Interfaces with technologies layers Radio PLC Wireless Optics Fibre 9
"Inter" concept Path selection in a mesh Technology-independent encryption End-to-end QoS mechanism throughout a heterogeneous network Full compatibility with existing s Hiding technologies from the upper layers Zero configuration 10
Inter in protocol stack IP Layer 3 Inter Path selection, etc. Eth 60GHz PLC UWB Layer 2 Eth PHY 60GHz PHY PLC PHY PHY UWB PHY Layer 1 11
Inter path selection Seamless mobility within Home Network End devices can also provide extension to coverage of the Home Network for remote devices Multi-technology bridge or mesh network Path selection according to QoS requirements, type of traffic (uni-/broad-/multi-cast), All interfaces can forward frames; load balancing by Class of Service over multiple links: 12
Inter- sub-layer data format Additional header is inserted >>> standardisation is mandatory! 13
Inter security End-to-end encryption Procedures for establishing trust and membership in the Home Network Incorporation of Trusted-Computing principles 14
Inter QoS control Admission control for flows Frames marked for QoS Resource reservation More support for QoS requirements of flows sourced from legacy devices Help for dynamic bandwidth availability 15
Industrial products Gigle networks has an intelligent multi- PHY switch (PLC, coaxial, WiFi, Ethernet) But there is no standardization 16
Conclusions OMEGA solutions and concept Inter- is our first solution Standardisation is next step 17
