Agenda MRV Company introduc3on OTN Technology and Standards MRV OTN, packet and op3cal posi3oning and use cases 2
MRV overview Founded in 1988 and headquartered in Chatsworth, CA, USA Public trading since NASDAQ, MRVC 3 R&D centers in USA and Israel >1000 global customers Packet and Op3cal portolio - Complete solu3on for Metro Networks Over $2B of field- proven installed base of op3cal and packet solu3ons MRV is a global leader in converged packet and op7cal solu7ons that empowers the op7cal edge for service providers & enterprises. ü Compelling Market ü Innova7ve Solu7ons ü Global Customer Base 3

OTN: More Efficient Use of Wavelengths and Fiber OTN is the ideal technology for na3ve transport of different types of protocols over the same wavelength. This translates into 20-30% savings due to resource usage efficiency. The constant pressure to reduce CAPEX&OPEX in networks drives to converged services on a common, low cost infrustructure. Efficiency of wavelength usage drives the need to aggregate low rate protocols over the highest possible rate at resonable cost. GE FC SONET/STM Digital Video 1λ 2λ 3λ 4λ Fiber OTN flexibly supports a wide variety of client signals in a standard payload format. Wide range of protocol support Video IP SONET/SDH SAN Transparent Payload Header FEC OTN wrapper provides complete transparency for client signals in flexible containers per ITU- T G.709 5
OTN Standard: ITU- T G.709 OTN standards established by the ITU- T (Recommenda3on G.709) Take some of the best ideas from legacy SONET/SDH networking Connec3on oriented End- to- end communica3ons Adapt to modern networks that are increasingly packet- based Flexible payloads Removed over engineered overhead Add new features Forward error correc3on for long distance opera3on h5ps:// REC- G.709/en 6
OTN Terminology If it is a signal being transmiked between two points on a wavelength, it s an OTU If it s the payload within the OTU that s being switched, mul3plexed, or otherwise moved around, it s an ODU You will probably never hear the term OPU 7
The most important numbers are: ODU0 = Gigabit Ethernet ODU2 = 10Gbps ODU4 = 100Gbps OTN Hierarchy 8
OTN Recursive Structure Smaller ODUs are sized to be carried inside the payloads of larger ODUs in arbitrary combina3ons up to the total bitrate Up to eight ODU0s can be carried inside an ODU2 Up to ten ODU2s can be carried inside an ODU4 ODUs can be stacked hierarchically and combined in any way so long as the total bandwidth of the encapsula3ng ODU is not exceeded ODUflex, a concatenated, arbitrary number of ODU0s, can carry off- sized payloads 9
Why OTN and not Ethernet/MPLS/MPLS- TP? Low latency: As a TDM protocol, OTN offers much lower latency than a switched protocol Scalability: As a TDM protocol, there are no issues with tag reuse, protocol scalability, private network domains, separate rou3ng tables, etc. Interoperability: As a simple protocol, interoperability is much more easier to achieve across op3cal, switching, and OTN platorms Built- in FEC: OTN is already being used even in packet services as a wrapper for longer distance opera3on Customer/service separa3on: Customer and service informa3on is not mixed and/or sta3s3cally mul3plexed with informa3on from other customers. This is a demand from some customers (e.g. financial). 10
Addi3onal Benefits of OTN Efficient Bandwidth U7liza7on is improved by mul3plexing lower rate signals into higher rate containers in an efficient manner. Performance monitoring for mul3layer services is part of the OTN protocol and enhances maintenance for services traversing mul3- vendor domains. Op7cal tools for control plane management by SDN or other soqware are provided by OTN and enable mesh connec3vity and resiliency as well as delay measurement, path computa3on and SLA compliance. 11
Should OTN Switching and L2 Switching Exist in the Same PlaTorm? Source: Infone3cs Research: OTN, MPLS, and Control Plane Strategies: Global Service Provider Survey OTN is coming to most switching pla\orms in the near future. 12
OTN Adapta3on and Mul3plexing Ideal for mul3plexing mul3ple low- speed services up to 10G or 100G Low speed interfaces SONET/SDH, Ethernet, Fibre Channel, Digital Video, etc. ODU- 0 Cross Connect OTU2 GCC0 for remote management High speed interfaces OTU2 / OTU4 Adapt any signal from 100Mbps to 4.25Gbps to 10Gbps Combine at the ODU level to high speed (10Gbps or 100Gbps) Op3onal: built- in ODU0 Cross- Connect for OTN efficiency Pluggable op3cs based (mul3- rate op3cs) Mul3ple redundancy op3ons 13
OTN Switching (Packet- Op3cal Example) Fabric cards are dual packet/otn Line and client cards have integrated switching and packet processing All elements operate seamlessly for fully flexible OTN switching CLIENT CARDS FABRIC CARDS LINE CARDS PP OTN Packet PP OTU4 OTU4 λ λ1...λn MUX DWDM OTN Packet OTN PP 10 X10G λ1...λn MUX DWDM PP Packet 14
OTN Transport Network Hardware (MRV OD ) OTN muxponding for efficient network u3liza3on OTN adapta3on of mul3ple service types OTN performance monitoring OTN framing for interoperability with transport networks OTN FEC on op3cs for longer distance opera3on MRV OD Flexible hardware design Mul3ple shelf op3ons to op3mize space efficiency Broad 100G and ROADM applica3on support Suppor3ng rates from T1 to 100G and beyond Suppor3ng the most broad protocol space with minimal hardware 15
OTN Aggrega3on and Switching Hardware (MRV Op3Packet ) OTN switching for flexible network opera3ons OTN/Packet level interopera3on OTN adapta3on of mul3ple service types OTN FEC on op3cs for longer distance opera3on OTN framing for interoperability with transport networks OTN performance monitoring OTN Client and Line Modules OTN host card and interchangeable modules Mul3ple protocol support (Ethernet, SONET/SDH, OTN, Fibre Channel, Infiniband, Video, CBR, etc.) Integrated OTN switching (ODU0, ODU1, ODU2, ODUflex) 16
Applica3on: OTN Network with Op3Driver OTN Mux GbE x 5 Content Delivery GbE x 2 Enterprise Networks GbE x 2 GbE x 3 OTU2 (10G) GbE x 5 Op3Driver adapts lower speed signals for transport over the OTN core network Efficient OTN mul3plexing at the edge maximizes network efficiency OTN Metro Transport Network OTN circuits scaled according to service requirements Op3Packet creates the OTN- based metro core network Mul3ple protocols carried on a common infrastructure Mul3ple wavelength, wavelength restora3on, and ROADM support in Op3Driver in the core Fibre Channel Storage Interconnect Legacy SONET/SDH Video 17
Complete POTP Applica3on: Mul3- layer Router Bypass 100GbE Service carried as a wavelength Enterprise data consolidated and handed off as a wavelength Wavelength and large bandwidth services switched at Layer 0 Minimize and op3mize expensive core router ports Switch wavelengths unless OTN is required Switch OTN unless MPLS is required Only handoff to the router the traffic that needs to be routed Mul3- Layer Network MPLS/OTN/Wavelength ROADM ROADM OTN Switch Core Router Enterprise Data Mul3- service via OTN Wavelengths with OTN sub- rate services dropped into OTN switch MPLS- based services dropped into packet switch from OTN switch or as wavelengths Packet Switch Consolidate and handoff only traffic that requires rou3ng Use Pro- Vision to manage across layers. 18
