Brocade approved solutions for 16/10/8G FC SAN connectivity Using Wavelength Division Multiplexing to expand network capacity Smartoptics provides qualified embedded CWDM and DWDM solutions for Brocade Fibre Channel and VDX switches. Embedded solutions, where transceivers reside in the switch, offers the most cost effective and simple approach to WDM networking. A solution brief from Smartoptics
Braocade approved CWDM/DWDM solutions for 16/10/8G connectivity Smartoptics provides 16/8G Fibre Channel (FC) CWDM and DWDM connectivity solutions certified in the latest Brocade 16 and 32G FC switche. Simple to use and cost effective open line connectivity solutions. The Brocade and Smartoptics solution Smartoptics offer optical transmission solutions based on Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CWDM) and Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) that help expand network capacity. Our embedded solutions enable long distance CWDM/DWDM transceivers to be connected directly into the Brocade switch rather than through a traditional DWDM platform. The design uses a single passive optical multiplexer to generate up to 16 CWDM or 80 DWDM channels through a single pair of fibers to support distances up to 70 km. With this approach, capex and opex are significantly reduced compared to active DWDM networking platforms. System capacity is the same as a traditional DWDM platform, but with far fewer elements at risk of failure. Reduced power, cooling, and space requirements result in the ultimate green data center solution. For longer distance connectivity, Smartoptics innovative platform is an intelligent 1U DWDM passive multiplexer with integrated amplifier and monitoring features. It works with any combination of embedded DWDM transceivers and transponders to extend distances up to 200km point to point. Longer in repeater mode. Embedded 16/10/8G FC connectivity Support for ELWL, CWDM and DWDM Open line networking Power and cooling costs reduced by 40 to 60 percent Rack space footprint reduced by 80 percent No buildup of DWDM transmission knowledge or costs 32G FC switch support (G620, X6, SX6) 2.
Simple and intelligent CWDM/DWDM multiplexing for open line networking A transponder solution for carriers and service providers offers many functions not needed in the datacom environment. These include individual cards providing functions for transforming a short range signal to a long range signal, amplifying the signal, signal conditioning, dispersion compensation, and network management, all of which are important to the kind of system a carrier or service provider needs but not for the relatively simple task of securely transporting large amounts of traffic between data centers. These systems bring a need for large real estate requirements, along with a need for additional telecom transmission knowledge to operate and manage them. The result is a fairly cumbersome, even clumsy, vertically integrated chassis based system. DWDM line cards Fans Power supplies Mux/Demux Tx & Rx DCMs NBI Network manager Craft terminal Element manager TL1/CLI An active CWDM/DWDM solution is a powered system, separated from the switch. The Smartoptics platform is designed specifically for open line networking. Managed or unmanaged 1U multiplexers that create virtual fibers. They work with any combination of transponders, muxponders and embedded DWDM transceivers. managed DWDM multiplexers combine the simplicity of a passive multiplexer with features usually reserved for complex telco DWDM systems. They have integrated channel monitoring, amplification and signal conditioning and easily handles all of today s data protocols up to 100Gbps per channel all in a plug and play 1U chassis. Embedded DWDM Natvie embedded 10/100G DWDM SAN Connectivity Lower latency Transponders White box switches QSFP28 SR4 distance extension Vendors without DWDM support Muxonders Improved wavelength utilization Native 40G support Transponder Transponder Muxponder handles any combination of embedded DWDM transceivers and transponders for maximum flexibility 3.
Embedded solutions the purest approach to SAN networking Embedded networking is simple and offers significant cost (capex and opex) savings. Because the CWDM/DWDM transceiver is connected directly in the switch, the signal is kept purely optical in the physical layer significantly reducing latency. All the solutions described above are embedded. A CWDM/DWDM signal through a CWDM/DWDM Multiplexer acts in the same way as if it was running over its own fiber pair. This means that none of the features of the switch are lost and no special configurations are required. If a DWDM transponder is used to convert the 850nm client signal to CWDM/DWDM, the switch usually has to be configured in a way that restricts some of the features in the switch. When using an embedded CWDM/DWDM solution, the port works in its default configuration so there s no need for new complex management systems. CWDM/DWDM signals act as if it was running over its own fiber pair, no switch features are lost, no special configurations are required Embedded CWDM/DWDM networking provides the most simple and cost effective method for transporting Fibre Channel over a dark fiber network between data centers. In addition to the commercial benefits, embedded CWDM/DWDM offers a number of technical advantages, compared to more traditional transponder based DWDM solutions. Embedded CWDM/DWDM approach allows: D-Port Testing Electrical loopback test (E-WRAP) Link traffic test Optical loopback test (O-WRAP) Link latency and distance measurement Other Brocade proprietary functions SAN Health Check Encryption FEC ISL Trunking and minimal latency No specific DWDM configurations Transponder systems are overly complex and require switch to be in R_RDY mode. Embedded networking performs as if each wavelength were a virtual fiber. Brocade standard SFP commands can be used functions (sfpshow, portcfgshow, portstatshow). 4.
Approved solutions Single channel connectivity When using Brocade 16G FC switches, Smartoptics offers end-to-end SAN extension solutions qualified and supported at the layer 1 level. If a single channel of 16/10/8G connectivity is required then the transceiver simply connects in to the switch at each site. The line fiber is connected to these transceivers and a single channel connection is established. Distance capabilities 16G FC 40km 8G FC 80km 10GE (VDX) 70km One fiber pair required for every SAN and WAN channel Unmanaged embedded communication Unmanaged embedded solutions are based on a 1U passive CWDM/DWDM multiplexer approach. The CWDM/DWDM transceiver is connected directly in to the switch as per the single channel connectivity solutions but this time it connects into the corresponding channel on the multiplexer instead of directly to the line fiber. Passive multiplexers are simple and cost effective devices that combine up to 8- Brocade ISLs on to a single dark fiber. In this way the capital and operating expenses can be drastically reduced. Embedded CWDM/DWDM systems are simple and cost effective. They drastically reduce fiber operating expenses. Passive multiplexer Passive multiplexer Unmanaged connectivity with CWDM/DWDM transceiver connected directly in to the switch and passive multiplexer Managed embedded networking Should the signals need to be monitored (i.e. laser on/off, send/receive levels, fiber cut, etc), Smartoptics intelligent multiplexer family,, operates in exactly the same plug and play way. Unlike an ordinary passive multiplexer, has a monitoring system that offers a common view of the optical channels. A unique managed passive multiplexer. Managed networking with DWDM transceiver connected directly in to the switch and unique intelligent DWDM multiplexer The world s first intelligent distance extending multiplexer 5.
Managed embedded networking with integrated distance extension Should longer distances be required, has integrated transmit and receive EDFAs (Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier), dispersion compensation and signal conditioning for point to point connectivity up to 2100 kilometers. It is still the same plug and play experience of a passive multiplexer but with auto traffic commissioning no matter the protocol type. For longer distances, can be set to compensate dispersion on transmit and receive signals Longer distance managed networking can be used as a an inline amplifier to allow for longer distance networking. Each additional inline amplifier increases the span distance by approx. 100 kilometers (dependent on protocol). Inline amplifiers used to increase distance up to 100km between spans. 6.
