People with Passion Best in Class Technology Power System Focus Monitor and Manage your Power System with Ease. TESLA 3000 Power System Recorder Accessing Multiple Remote Recorders on a Single Modem Call using Rugged Server In this scheme a remote PC can raise a call to the server and establish a PPP Link Devices on the Ethernet may then be contacted by IP Modem Telephone Dialup Network PPP Remote PC RuggedServer Ethernet TESLA 1 TESLA 2 Summary This document explains how TESLA Control Panel can access multiple remote TESLA Recorders with only a single modem call. This is much more convenient than the traditional method, which requires a separate call to each recorder. Using a device called a LAN modem (in this case, a Rugged Comm RS400) makes this possible. The LAN modem has several Ethernet ports to which the recorders are connected and one phone line. The user establishes a PPP dialup connection to the modem and then accesses the Recorders with TESLA Control Panel using their assigned IP on the Ethernet Network. Configuration There are four main preparation steps. 1. Configure the LAN modem (PPP & Ethernet) 2. Configure the TESLA Recorders 3. Configure the PC for Dialup Networking 4. Configure TESLA Control Panel Note: The example above shows only 2 TESLAs but this version of the modem has 4 Ethernet ports so 4 devices can be supported including a mix of relays. Our multi-function relays and recorders provide smart solutions to your protection, monitoring and control needs. ERLPhase (formerly a division of NxtPhase), is a subsidiary of Easun Reyrolle Ltd with over 60 years of power management expertise.
1. Configure the LAN Modem Using the RS-232 Port to Access the User Interface Attach a terminal (or PC running terminal emulation software, ie. HyperTerminal) to the RS-232 port. The terminal should be configured for 8 bits, no parity operation at 57.6 Kbps. Hardware and software flow control must be disabled. Select a terminal type of VT100. When the terminal is connected, selecting any key on the keyboard prompts the user to enter the username and password. The modem is shipped with a default administrator username admin and password admin. Note: The user interface is organized as a series of menus. Sub-menus are entered by selecting the desired menu with the arrow keys and pressing the enter key. Selecting the escape key ascends to the parent menu. Rugged Operating System v3.6.1 (Nov :20) Copyright (c) RuggedCom, All rights reserved System Name: System Location: ERLPHASE Winnipeg Contact: Dale Hopps (204) x235 Product: RS400-HI-TX-2-M MAC Address: 00-0A-DC-03-8C-00 Serial Number: RS Enter User Name: admin Enter Password: XXXXX Once successfully logged in, the user is presented with the Main Menu. Highlight Administration and Enter. Note: The Command Bar at bottom of each menu offers a list of commands that apply to the currently displayed menu. System Main Menu admin access Administration Serial Protocols Ethernet Ports Ethernet Statistics Spanning Tree Virtual LANs Classes of Service Multicast Filtering MAC Address Tables Network Discovery PPP Configuration Diagnostics <CTRL> Z-Help S-Shell X-Logout Highlight Configure IP Interface and Enter. System Administration admin access Configure IP Interfaces Configure IP Gateways Configure IP Services Configure System Identification Configure Passwords Configure Time and Date Configure SNMP Configure Security Server Configure DHCP Relay Agent Configure Syslog <CTRL> Z-Help S-Shell X-Logout 2
Select Enter again brings up the Edit Page. System IP Interfaces admin access Type ID Mgmt IP Address Type IP Address Subnet VLAN 1 Yes Static <CTRL> Z-Help S-Shell I-Insert L-Delete On the Edit Page arrow down to the IP Address and Enter highlights the actual address so that you can edit it. This IP range should not conflict with any other Network IPs that the Remote Computer may also be connected to at the time of connection to the modem via Dial up. System IP Interfaces admin access Type VLAN ID 1 Mgmt Yes IP Address Type Static IP Address Subnet <CTRL> Z-Help S-Shell In this case we enter the address used in our example of after making the change. Enter brings up a new Command Bar. CTRL A applies the change; if you do not Apply, the changes are not saved. After the change is applied a message comes up on the bottom of the screen that says Changes Saved. System IP Interfaces admin access Type VLAN ID 1 Mgmt Yes IP Address Type Static IP Address Subnet <CTRL> Z-Help S-Shell A-Apply 3
At this point you can use ESC 3 times to get back to the Administration menu. System IP Interfaces admin access Type VLAN ID 1 Mgmt Yes IP Address Type Static IP Address Subnet <CTRL> Z-Help S-Shell Now we will begin the PPP Configuration for the dial-in Client. Arrow down to the PPP Configuration item and select Enter. Configure Modem Settings allows you to set the Country Code and Number of rings before answer, this is fairly self explanatory so we won t elaborate. System Main Menu admin access Administration Serial Protocols Ethernet Ports Ethernet Statistics Spanning Tree Virtual LANs Classes of Service Multicast Filtering MAC Address Tables Network Discovery PPP Configuration Diagnostics <CTRL> Z-Help S-Shell X-Logout System PPP Configuration admin access Arrow down to Configure PPP Control and select Enter. Configure Modem Settings Configure PPP Control Configure PPP Users View PPP Statistics Clear PPP Statistics Reset PPP Port <CTRL> Z-Help S-Shell X-Logout 4
This is where you designate the IP of the Modem Local IP Address and the address that will be assigned to the Remote Client that dials in Remote IP Address. As a reminder this IP range should not conflict with any other Network IPs that the Remote Client may also be connected to at the time of connection to the modem via Dial up. In our example we used the defaults. System PPP Control admin access PPP Status Enabled Local IP Address Remote IP Address Subnet Server Name Server Outgoing PAP Password <CTRL> Z-Help S-Shell ESC back to the PPP Configuration Menu and select Configure PPP Users and then select Enter. This opens this menu. CTRL-I opens an edit page where you can add Users and Passwords. System PPP Users admin access User Name Password Auth Type Remote Net Remote Subnet Table is empty <CTRL> Z-Help S-Shell I-Insert L-Delete Select User Name and Enter allows you to enter the desired User Name and then select a Password and Enter allows you to enter a Password. For simplicity we will use CHAP authentication. Upon completion of the Password Entry and Enter the Apply option appears in the Control Bar at the bottom of the window, so CTRL-A saves the change. System PPP Users admin access User Name Password Auth Type Remote Net Remote Subnet User Password CHAP Only <CTRL> Z-Help S-Shell A-Apply 5
This process can be repeated for as many different Users and Passwords and you wish to enter. Escape all the way back to the Main Menu and CTRL-X will log you out. System PPP Users admin access User Name Password Auth Type Remote Net Remote Subnet User Password CHAP Only <CTRL> Z-Help S-Shell I-Insert L-Delete At this point we have completed the basic configuration of the Rugged Comm Modem Server, Item 1. of the Configuration Schedule above. 2. Configure the TESLA Recorders Using the serial port or USB to Serial adapter connect a serial cable to the front of the TESLA, open terminal emulation software again and make the changes to the communications parameters, 38,400 baud, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit, and in this case Hardware Flow Control. Serial: 38,400 Baud 8 data bits no parity 1 stop bit Hardware Flow Control 6
Enter brings up the Login Screen. Login: maintenance (lower case) No password is required. If you are asked for one, there is a mistake in the login name, if anything is misspelled in maintenance you cannot backspace. Select Enter to get another Login Prompt and try again. When you have successfully logged in, you are presented with the Maintenance Menu. Note: The * next to some of the items. You can only modify these items through the use of this Maintenance Menu. Note: Menu items are selected by typing the number of the item at the command line at the bottom of the screen. In this case we want Item 1 as shown. After 1 is entered you will see messages that the System is halting etc. Then the current parameters are displayed and you are asked if you want to change the IP Address., you must enter a y then you will be asked to enter the new IP, then you will be asked if you want to change the IP to the value that you entered, and you must enter y again in order to make the change. This is repeated for the Subnet Mask and Default Gateway, we will use the IP as shown for the TESLA in our example above and the Subnet Mask should match the value we entered in the Server of , and finally the Gateway IP should be that of the Server, This process needs to be repeated for each TESLA connected to the Server. Please enter a command: [1-17] # 1 Watchdog holdoff running. System does not appear to be running. Ensuring that all processes are halted...system halted. Getting current IP address Current IP address is Current subnet mask is Current default gateway is Do you want to change the IP address? 8 3. Configuring the PC for Dialup Networking In order for the PC to connect to the Modem and thus the Remote Recorders, a Dialup Networking entry must be created. The instructions in this section pertain to Windows XP, but the steps are similar for most versions of Windows. Select Start>Connect to>show All Connections (and from the left Panel) select Create a New Connection. When the Network Connection Wizard appears, click Next. In the next screen select Connect to the Network at my Workplace. This entry includes: Connect to a business network (using dial-up or VPN).. So this is the type of connection we want to create. Select Next. The next screen presents two options Dial-Up and VPN and of course we want Dial-Up. Select Next again. Now it will ask which Modem on your PC that you want to use to dial out. Select it from your list and click Next. 8
This must match the Username and Password used assigned in the PPP Configuration of the Rugged Comm Modem. You can place a check in the Save User/Password box depending on your company s policy on Usernames and Passwords. You also have the option on this screen for Me only or Anyone. In the next screen give the connection a meaningful name such as the name of the substation where the Modem and Recorders are installed. Finally in the next screen you will be asked for the phone number of the Modem in the Substation. Select Next and choose to Create the Connection for all users. Select Next thru other screens until you get to Finish. At this point you will be presented with the connect screen which asks for your User Name and Password. 9
4. Configuring TESLA Control Panel Start TESLA Control Panel and on the right hand side under the Select IED panel, select Add New. Here you can enter the IED Name, this most likely be the Recorder Name in the Substation and keep in mind you will be addressing more than one recorder (the main reason for the installation of the Rugged Comm Modem/Server). Enter the IP Address of the particular recorder you have designated using the IP assigned to it in Configuration Step 2. Configure the TESLA Recorder click OK. Repeat this step for each of the Recorders that are attached to the Rugged Comm. Testing and Using the System Testing the system consists of dialing to the LAN Modem (Rugged Comm) and ensuring that the Recorders connected to it can be reached. 1. Locate and open the Dial-Up Networking Entry created earlier (in this example Substation 01 Rugged Comm). This can be found in Start>Connect to> and selecting it from the list in the drop down that appears. 2. Note: The first time this dialog box opens select Properties at the bottom. And verify that the Type of Dial-up server I am Calling is PPP. After that is confirmed select OK to close the dialog box. Now enter your Username and Password to match the PPP username and Password configuration of the Rugged Comm. Click Dial and wait until the Modem answers and negotiates a connection (you should see a connection icon appear in your system tray). 10
3. Bring up a DOS Window by selecting Start>Run>Cmd. In the resulting DOS Window type Ping and the IP Address of the Modem (in our example ) you should see Successful Ping. The same can be done for the IP Address of each of the Recorders (again in our example and ). You should now be able to communicate with any of the TESLAs connected to the Rugged Comm using TESLA Control Panel. To test this, follow these steps: 1. Do not hang up the connection. 2. Start TESLA Control Panel and select one of the recorders you set up in Configuration Step 4 and select Connect. You are now connected to the remote recorder and can use TESLA Control Panel normally. 3. To disconnect from the recorder, go to the Main Screen of TESLA Control Panel and select Disconnect. This only disconnects TESLA Control Panel from the recorder, it does not hang up the LAN Modem connection. 4. If you wish to connect to another recorder in the substation before hanging up you can simply select it from TESLA Control Panel s drop down list and select Connect. 5. Once you are done communicating with the remote Recorders, you can hang up the LAN Modem connection by right-clicking the communication icon in the system tray and selecting Disconnect. Summary Following these steps should allow you to configure TESLA Control Panel to access multiple TESLA Recorders on a single Modem call. The specifications and product information contained in this document are subject to change without notice. In case of inconsistencies between documents, the version at will be considered correct.
