Why you need Fiber and Copper Certification Presenter: Wayne Allen Role: Technical Manager Fluke Networks
What is driving IT today?
IT is Changing The IT industry is full of Buzz words! Cloud, SDN, SAN, BYOD, SaaS, SLA s to name a few Wi-Fi is becoming all pervasive Plus we want our requested data at near instantaneous speeds. That requires higher data rates that require new technologies. New technologies require attention to the testing regime for them to work correctly.
IT is Changing What is the LAST thing we think of when we discuss these Buzz words in relation to these emerging new technologies? Layer 1! The physical Layer! Our data cabling! the foundation of our networks Build your network on a poor foundation Disaster! This can t be fixed with the latest and greatest server, or the fastest switch around. Cabling is how we move our packets around our Data Centres, through our buildings and across countries.
Layer 1 is Changing This it? No longer is it just that blue cable in the wall, or that aqua fibre over there! For many years 1GB Ethernet has been considered good enough. Enter Mobility and BYOD! It is now prolific. We resorted to Wi-Fi as the preferred delivery medium» Now we needed more Wi-Fi capacity Enter ac Wi-Fi technology with bandwidth promises 1.3Gbps Phase 1, up to 6.9Gbps Phase 2, yet our cabling delivers 1GB Ethernet There are a lot of wires in Wireless! Recently published TIA document, TSB-162-A suggests 2 * Cat 6A minimum per TO that provides the drop feeding the Wireless Access Point!
Layer 1 Data Rates (PHY Speeds) are Changing To meet the need for speed new PHY rates are being proposed 10GBase-T is here, requires Cat6A Copper Cabling or OM3/OM4 fibre 25GB and 40GB are being proposed,» 40GB is 30m Channel length max 100GB is being proposed on laser optimized MMF, 4 wavelengths. Nbase-T being proposed by a consortium led by Cisco enabling the reuse of existing data cabling at higher throughputs. 2.5GB on Cat 5e, 5GB on Cat 6.» Now we can support most implementations of ac on existing cables As we push more data over our cabling, the more critical it will become for our data cabling to be performing correctly!
Standards Update
Why Standards? Why you should care about standards Ensures that the cabling system works properly Ensures interoperability between products Levels the playing field by offering a known experience Ensures cabling system is easy to use and maintain Combines knowledge of many of the best industry experts in their respective fields Standards are an inexpensive way for you to learn from the experts and apply their knowledge to your projects.
The state of Test Standards Taiwan uses the TIA Standards formulated in the USA by the Telecommunications Industry Association. ANSI/TIA-568-C standards are about to be updated to 568-D! ANSI/TIA-1152 Requirements for Field Test Instruments and Measurements for balanced Twisted-Pair Cabling
Fiber Certification requirements (TIA-568-C) Tier 1 (required, mandatory) Testing loss: each optical fiber link is measured for its attenuation with an OLTS Dual wavelength in a single direction is required Verifying length: length verification may be obtained from cable sheath markings or via the OLTS Tier 2 (optional) Tier 1 tests plus OTDR trace for cable attenuation and component losses Launch conditions Encircled Flux: The light source is to meet the launch requirements of TIA B
TIA Recently Published ANSI/TIA 4966: Educational Facilities (2014) This standard addresses the unique characteristics of educational facilities, and includes plans for wireless coverage in all buildings. The recommended cabling media are Category 6A and OM3 fiber, to support the requirement for extensive WLAN coverage. Common theme with all the latest standards Copper should be Cat6A minimum Fibre should be OM3 minimum
TIA Work in Progress TIA 568 C.2 1 Category 8 (2015) 24 m permanent link with 2 x 3 m cords support to support 40GBASE-T. Testing procedures are incomplete, and not developed enough to be used in the field yet. TIA TSB-184: PoE for Twisted Pair Cabling Revised guidelines include 4-pair PoE, 60W Standard coming
TIA Work in Progress TIA TSB-5018: Distributed Antenna Systems specifies recommendations for DAS cabling infrastructure including cabling topology, architecture, design and installation practices, test procedures and components. TIA 862 B: Cabling for Intelligent Building Systems (2015) All types of building automation systems. Guidance for modified permanent link (direct connections to equipment), no TO.
Structured Cabling Certification
Evolving Challenges Once upon a time, that blue Cat 5 cable used to rule supreme! Today we have a plethora of cabling options for copper solutions Cat 5e, Cat 6, Cat 6a, Class F (Cat 7) and Class Fa (Cat 7a) For fibre we can choose multiple types with varied connectors Usually OM3 or OM4 for Multimode with LC or SC connectors 12 or 24 core trunk cables with MPO/MTP terminations and utilizing cassettes with LC output terminations becoming more common. OS1 or more recently OS2 Singlemode with LC or SC connectors Many vendors can now also supply MPO/MPT trunks and cassettes similar to the above MMF solution.
Controlling the Challenges We are often asked; By Network Owners How can I ensure that my cabling solution will deliver on its promise? How can I ensure I have been supplied with real cable, not fake cable? By Installers How can I ensure that I am delivering the best possible product to my customers and differentiate myself from my competitors? By Manufacturers How do I ensure the product that I have supplied is installed correctly so that I can deliver, confidently, my system warranty?
Controlling the Challenges The good news! There is a single solution to all those questions. TESTING and CERTIFICATION
What does Certification provide Certification test tools make measurements and compare results to industry cabling standards They measure NEXT, Return Loss, Propagation Delay, PSELFEXT and many other parameters across a standards-specified frequency band for copper installations They measure insertions loss (attenuation) of fibre links and analyze connector faces for defects. They provide PASS or FAIL results on the cabling according to standards specifications They provide complete test results documentation, required as proof to building owners that the cable was installed correctly They ensure that cabling installations meet warranty specifications of cabling OEM s
Where are the tests defined? TIA-1152 for Copper Cabling Defines how we are to test Balanced Twisted Pair Telecommunications Cabling Two Link Models Tier 2 Channel Testing Tier 1 Testing Permanent Link TIA-568-C.0 mandates Tier 1 testing with Tier 2 Optional TIA B and TIA defines our reference methods for testing Multimode and Singlemode fibre. Fibre has the same link models as copper. Tier 1 Testing is Loss Only via Light Source and Power Meter or OLTS Tier 2 Testing is Tier 1 Testing PLUS an OTDR Trace.
Channel and Permanent Link A Channel is made up of the Permanent Link, plus Patch Cords, Cross Connects and Equipment Cords. Therefore it can be 2, 3 or 4 transitions. Fibre or Copper. Equipment Cord Equipment Racks Consolidation Point Permanent Link Channel Link TO C P Patch Cord
Channel and Permanent Link Testing - Copper Channel Link Measurement Permanent Link Measurement
Channel and Permanent Link Testing - Fibre SM Couplers SM Couplers Patch Cords Test Reference Cords Patch Cords Test Reference Cords Test Reference Cords Test Reference Cords Permanent Link Testing Channel Link Testing
Fiber Testing is easy! The approach may have looked complex, but it really takes just a few simple steps to be testing fibre in a professional manner. 1. Cleanliness is everything, you must Inspect all end faces of connectors that are going to be under test and Clean if necessary. 2. Set your reference using the appropriate Reference Method, 1 Jumper Reference is the preferred method for MM and SM Fibre. You MUST use Test Reference Cords (TRCs), standard patch cords have too much loss! 3. Connect your test instruments and reference cords to the link to be tested. Test Away!
Inspecting and cleaning is a must! Dirt is the number cause of fiber network failure! Particles of dust and debris trapped between fiber end faces cause signal loss, back reflection, and damaged equipment Dirt can damage fiber end-faces Dirty end-faces can cross containment other fibers Good Connector Fingerprint on Connector Dirty Connector
Inspecting and cleaning is a must! Always clean your fiber end-faces or ports before connecting! Use the correct cleaning products Wet to dry cleaning is ALWAYS better Wet Cleaning Supplies Click pens are ideal for ports and patch cords Click Cleaners
Automated End-face grading Allows testing to industry standards IEC No more confusion about whether the fiber is good or bad Eliminates human subjectivity from the measurement Reduces fiber inspection time
Setting the Correct Reference Tier 1 Often Called Optical Loss Testing Most often done with an OLTS (Optical Loss Test Set) today. Allows testing of Duplex fibers (two fibers) Provides loss and length Easy to do in the field Set the reference using TRCs Verify your TRCs Connect to the link under test Initiate Test Done!
