3 Hardware Evolution S/390 z900,z800, z990,z890 System z9, z10 zenterprise 196 and zenterprise BladeCenter Extension zenterprise 196 (z196) is the current IBM mainframe processor. Optionally zenterprise BladeCenter Extension (zbx) racks may be attached to the z196. A zbx may be seen as a logical extension of a z196 but is not required to run a z196. Page 3

7 zenterprise Ensemble A z196 and any zbx that might be attached are referred to as a zenterprise node. An Ensemble is a collection of 1 to 8 nodes that are managed as a single logical virtualized system. A node can only be a member of 1 Ensemble. The IBM zenterprise Unified Resource Manager (Unified Resource Manager) is the part of the Hardware Management Console (HMC) that manages an ensemble as a single logical virtualized system. Page 7

8 Unified Resource Manager Hardware Management Console (HMC) Unified Resource Manager is required for Ensemble Unified Resource Manager provides the following for a given ensemble: Energy Management Monitoring and trend reporting of CPU energy efficiency. Ability to query maximum potential power. Static power savings Performance Management HMC provides a single consolidated and consistent view of resources. 9 Top-of-Rack Switches INMN TORs IEDN TORs There are two internal networks that connect the z196 to the zbx racks. INMN IEDN Top-of-Rack (TOR) Switches There are 2 INMN TOR switches and 2 IEDN TOR switches in the first zbx rack that is attached to a z196. If more than 1 zbx rack is attached, the additional zbx racks do not have TOR switches. Intranode Management Network (INMN) only used for management and monitor flows connects z196 and zbx in a node does not span between nodes Each node has its own INMN. Intraensemble Data Network (IEDN) used for application data flows between ensemble elements connects z196 and zbx in an ensemble There is only one IEDN in an ensemble. Page 9
