All of a sudden a problem appears and the transactions completes with errors. The person calls in and reports the failure. Now you need an end to end view of your infrastructure... It is driving the implementation of Standards

9 Why do I care about standards? Because they are the live blood that make things work together You want an example think Railway... Thousands of people work at the borders to Russia because they implemented a different standard... by purpose. Lack of standards means lack of efficiency and therefore waste of resources.

Major features that are included in zbx today are: Horizontal workload management across platforms Virtualization for each platform (INTEL, POWER, SYSTEM z) API to exteranlize functions today located on the HMC (Q4) Energy monitoring and control Things you have to care about yourself: Application monitoring Provisioing of images Remember, it is a infrastructure as a service offering not more not less.

12 Some more thoughts on Workloads Different workloads require different qualities of service. Think banking transactions versus static web pages display Compromises in the HW architecture and operating system might have negative impact on your business (DR capabilities, handling peak workloads, security issues,...). Cloud Computing is really great stuff and contains a large potential to increase efficiency but Clouds MUST be able to span multiple architectures. Otherwise you are creating cloudy island and limited business solutions.

16 What are others doing with zbx (references) SAP IBM Montpellier for an Italien customer Very successfull, showed more throughput than a standalone POWER 770, or standalone bladecenter (with INTEL blades). Swedish Bank Uses the datapower blades in zbx to reduce complexity Easy implementation German public customer Likes the standardized approach Uses zbx for infrastructure related services (ITM, TSM) and Lotus Notes (on z). Canada Dept. of National Defense Enterprise hosting with z196 and zbx instead of migration off the mainframe Why are there not more? Because it is really new technology and customers want to do Proof of Concepts, performance measurements and want to fully understand the implications of a zbx install in their datacenter.

18 First SAP benchmark on zenterprise outcome (real customer case) Four major outcomes have been demonstrated during the benchmark: 1- Capacity : Global throughput better than competition, with the use of latest technologies 2- Scalability : DB2 z/os and zbx pblade showed linear scalability on both sides of the architecture 3- Performance : Improvements have been demonstrated with internal network (IEDN). Value added on specific workloads. 4- Manageability : Ease of implementation and migration with Unified Resource Manager

19 Why do I (personally) think zbx and Hybrid Computing is a good idea? What is the difference (amongst other things...) between a successful and not so successful datacenter? The ability to be FAST, if new services have to be implemented. The ability to create and adhere to STANDARDS. The ability to adopt CHANGE In this regard the zenterprise and zbx is a perfect match! However... This is the start of a longer journey You can expect many more features and improvements over time It also implies that you think about the way your distributed and mainframe departements are working together. The integration between different (IT) worlds is key to select the one platform that is suited best for your application One size fits all is NOT the solution, don t get fooled here.
