2 Introduction Flow measurement can be based on different metering principles as there are thermal, Vortex, turbine, MID, differential pressure, ultrasound and many more. Depending on the application all these metering principles show advantages and disadvantages. Before you will start the development of an ultrasonic flow sensor for measuring aqueous liquids it really makes sense to test out its ability for the targeted application. For this purpose this demonstrator is ideal! The ultrasonic flow meter, based on the TDC-GP30 from ams is realized as a demonstration system for aqueous media and is suitable for integration into equipment, machines and tools. With this demonstrator it is possible to practically evaluate the extensive possibilities of the GP30 immediately and to define own specifications for custom specific design for a flow meter. An outstanding tool for a significant facilitation of introduction into the world of ultrasonic flow metering is now available. The demonstration system consists of a flow piece made from bras with a standard process connection 1, ultrasonic transducers and a matched GP30-based electronic board. The system is fully operational and compensated for a flow range from 1,0 to 75 l/min with a media temperature from 5 C to 90 C. The lowest detectable flow is around 0,2l/min, enabling the use as a leakage detector or drop detector. The TDC-GP30 demonstration system is working as a complete frontend solution with integrated digital signal processing unit (32-Bit Microprocessor) up to a calibratable output. A real single chip solution is provided, including a digital volume flow output via UART, pulse and SPI and allows the generic standard MCU to be focused to the communication management of the sensor as for example visualization of results or wireless interfaces. Custom specific changes for other liquids and flow- ranges may be performed on request. Advantages The measurement method is widely independent from colour, temperature and electromagnetic properties of the fluid. The measurement method incorporating the fast time-of-flight evaluation is working almost without time-loss and herewith superior to turbines or thermal sensors. Even pulsating flows (e.g. membrane pumps) are capable to measure. No moving parts, no damage caused by high flow volumes larger than specified. High long-term stability. Free choice of installing position. Detection of empty flow section (air) and surveillance of floe direction. Leakage detection starting with a flow of drops in a DN20 system. 3 Principle of Operation The flow meter is using the ultrasound time-of-flight (ToF) method. Here, the flight time of an ultrasonic pulse is gathered in the direction of flow and in the opposite direction. Using the difference of both times, the speed of flow and with this, the flow volume is calculated. Usually a number of raw results, gathered by different customized algorithms are evaluated before post processing. 4 PC-Software By connecting the USB-interface with a PC (Windows 7 (x86/x64) or Windows 8 (x86/x64)), the interface-box is recognized as a virtual COM-port. Starting the software, following window opens: By help of the following dialog, the COM-port needs to be specified (here COM5, may change depending on system). By pressing the button Connect, the interface-box will be connected with the PC. The upper graph will display the measured flow. 5 The amplitudes of the received ultrasound signals, the speed of sound of the liquid and the temperatures (Pt1000) are visible by digital displays. It is possible to select arithmetic mean (n=10, n=20, n=50, n=100) for flow and ToF to match the response time. All displayed results may continuously be exported by pressing the button Save into a selectable txt-file for further processing.
