4 SAFETY TIPS Your OP101 letter opener complies with standard safety regulations for office equipment of this type. Before operating it, read the following tips to assure safe operation. Follow the instructions for installation and operation to the letter opener carefully. Connect the letter opener to a grounded singlephase power mains. Do not remove any parts. All maintenance and repair must be done by an authorized technician. Non-observance of this rule will void your warranty. Do not use water or benzene to clean your letter opener. Avoid operating your letter opener without any letters inserted into it. This would reduce the lifetime of the machine. Page 4

6 1. GENERAL The OP101 letter opener slits open envelopes measuring up to 9" x 12" and approx..16" thick. Larger and thicker envelopes can also be opened if they are fed individually. The machine is charged with stacks of envelopes and can be continually recharged without interrupting the slitting process. 2. HOW TO USE 1. Switch the machine on (1), 2. Tap the stack of envelopes hard on a flat surface several times to line up the lower edges (A). This ensures that the contents will not slip down inside the envelope and be damaged by the slitting blades. 3. Turn the stack of envelopes so that the lined up edges face upward (B), then loosen the stack far enough to ensure that the top edge of each envelope drops into contact with the work surface (C). 4. Now insert the prepared stack of envelopes (2) between the transport belt (3) and the pressure arm (4). 3. IN CASE OF DIFFICULTY If the envelopes are not being drawn into the slitting area properly, apply gentle pressure either to the pressure arm or the stack of envelopes until proper transport resumes. Envelopes which get stuck in the slitting area should be pulled out gently in a sideways direction. Page 6

7 4. ABOUT YOUR NEW LETTER OPENER The letter opener is designed to receive mail in any format from 3" x 6" to 9" x 12" and having a thickness of up to.16". The letter opener draws in each letter in the stack individually, slits it open and deposits it into the catch tray in the same order. The pressure arm provides for the required pressure. Letters are grasped by the feeder rollers without manual aid. Slitting open mail offers the following advantages: No damage to enclosed documents, No scrap, no interference from paper cuttings, No sharp edges, Handle edge at the opening provides for easy removal of documents. Vertical and systematic storage of the opened letters makes it possible to easily remove batches even while the unit is in operation. Page 7

8 5. INSTALLING THE LETTER OPENER 5.1 Unpacking Remove the basic unit and any accessories from the packaging, Check to make certain that the unit is complete and undamaged. Do not operate the letter opener if parts have been damaged or are missing. Please contact your local servicing dealer. Page 8

9 5.2 Installing Place the letter opener on a firm level surface, Mount the pressure arm into bushing on the letter supporting surface. Bring the catch tray to the right side of the basic unit. Check to make certain that the mains switch is turned off. Connect the power cable to the letter opener and a grounded single-phase power-mains. The letter opener is now ready for operation Page 9

10 6. OPENING LETTERS USING THE LETTER OPENER 6.1 Preparatory steps Sort out any unsuitable letters (e.g. plastic bags and letters that are thicker than 4 mm, or made from synthetic materials). See "Technical Specifications" for further information. Switch on the letter opener. Letters do not have to be sorted according to size, but they should be arranged to face in one direction (address field toward the front). Tap the stack of envelopes on a flat surface several times in order to line up the lower edges. This ensures that the contents slip down inside the envelope and are thus not damaged when the letters are slit open. Page 10

11 Turn the stack of envelopes so that the lined-up edges face upwards. Loosen up the stack just enough so that the top of each envelope rests on the letter supporting surface while making certain no to tap the stack again. 6.2 Inserting letters Insert the prepared stack of envelopes between the transport belt and the pressure arm. Switch off the letter opener when the unit is not in use over longer periods of time. To improve the machine efficiency, it is recommended to pre-sort the envelopes according to sizes. Page 11

12 7. CLEANING Periodically, clean the rollers with the liquid for cleaning recommended by your dealer. 8. TROUBLESHOOTING PROBLEM The letter opener does not feed letters into cutting assembly. Letter is stuck in cutting assembly SOLUTION Apply a slight amount of pressure to the pressure arm or stack of letters until the letters are fed again one by one. pull letter out of the cutting assembly in the direction of transport. Letters are not properly opened Contact your authorized servicing. Under no circumstances should you use any objects such as scissors in order to remove any bits of paper from the cutting assembly. If necessary, remove the cover. Page 12
