3 1.0 General The 3M Indoor Protected Entrance Terminal (PET) 4588 Series provides electrical protection and a termination point for outside plant cable (feeder) and indoor house wiring (distribution). 4 1.04 Protector Specifications Use ONLY UL Recognized or Listed five-pin protectors in the Special Tools Needed to Install a. 3M MS 2 Module or 3M 710 Connector Splice Rig (Not required if 3M Scotchlok Connectors are used) 2.0 Terminal Location and Mounting 2.01 Locate terminal according to standard operating procedures. Consider the following points: a. Locate terminal inside building as close as possible to cable entrance. b. Locate terminal on a firm mounting surface where it will be accessible to the technicians at all times; where it can be reached without a ladder; and where it will not project in a hazardous manner Slide the 3M Pull N Shrink Tube (PST) on the end of the cable with the pull-tab away from the PET and temporarily keep it out of the way With the groove towards the PET and long end towards the cable, snap the cable gland halves around the cable. Slide the gland into the entry port of the PET Measure 2" of sheath past the gland inside the PET. Pull the gland and cable out of the PET pair 100 pair CAUTION Avoid locations near flammable materials, ignitable gases, dust, moisture, temperature extremes, moving machinery, electric light and power circuits, and electrical equipment. c. Observe caution when exposing terminal to chemicals in liquid or vapor form as they may damage the plastic components Open the splicing chamber by loosening the nut securing the lock plate. Slide the plate to the right to enable the chamber cover to open. (See-fig. 7.02) 2.03 Pull the preterminated short stub, insulated ground wire, and accessories out of the splicing chamber Mount the terminal in designated position with the three mounting screws provided Remove jumper wire retaining ring from poly bag and install in faceplate Remove the sheath leaving at least 21" of free conductor length, identify and secure the cable groups ends. Bond the cable shield according to your company s practice Insert the gland s groove into cable port. Slide the PST over the gland and slowly unwind the core. The PST fits over either the small diameter of the pair gland or butts up against the PET for the 100 pair gland pair 3.0 Feeder Cable Preparation and Strain-Relief 3.01 Feeder cable diameters for the PETs Feeder Cable PET Pair Minimum Maximum Count Diameter Diameter 25.42" 1.08" 50.63" 1.45" " 1.80" If cable diameter is smaller than the minimum, use tape to build up to the minimum Run the feeder cable 24" past the PET s cable entry port A

5 3.08 Complete the PST core removal over the gland The blank plate MUST be used in the empty cable port for UL Listing Attach the cable to the wall according to your company s practice. 4.0 Terminal Grounding Fasten a #6 AWG wire to the ground bar which is located on the front of the unit. Connect other end of ground wire to local ground per company standards. Note: Failure to properly bond and ground the terminal per N.E.C. or local equivalent codes may render protection arrestors useless Module Splicing a. Splice the feeder cable groups to the corresponding connectorized stubs according to your company s practice M Scotchlok or individual connector splicing a. Splice the feeder cable groups to the corresponding connectorized stubs in the PET according to your company s practice When all splicing is completed, bundle the groups and secure them with tie wraps into the splice chamber on the left side Close the PET s splice chamber cover and secure with the lockplate bolt. (See 7.02) 5.0 Distribution (House) Wire Termination Note: Use ONLY 22 or 24 AWG House, Station or Jumper Wire to terminate in the 3M Self- Strip terminal blocks At the assigned binder posts, cut the wire ends clean, separate the pair (Tip-Left, Ring-Right) and bend the wire ends 90 degrees With the binder post slot vertical, insert the wire into the top entry port, push through the post and out the bottom exit port Fully insert a flat blade screwdriver into the slot, turn it 90 degrees clockwise until the post comes to a stop and the wire end cuts off. 6 6.0 Installing the Electrical Protectors NOTE: Use ONLY UL Recognized or Listed protectors in the PET The 4588 PET uses a standard five pin protector receptacle field. The long pins of the protector connect Tip and Ring from the feeder cable though the protector to the short pins to the distribution/house wire. To disconnect the distribution wire, pull the protector out to the detents on the long pins to hold it in place. This continues to protect from the feeder cable side Insert protectors into the protector receptacle field according to your company s practice M Self-Strip Single Pair Probe 4327A and Dish 8.01 Use for single circuit testing or access Install the Probe 4327A and Dish close to the PET Use the Probe 4327A by aligning and inserting the probe pins into the test ports of the binding post to be accessed. Cap Test Ports Tip Cap Ring Cap Tip Ring Protective Cover 7.01 When closing the cover, the exposed hasp allows for locking when security is necessary Depress the clamps; push the clamps onto the posts To remove, depress the clamps and pull the probe off the posts M Priority Caps 4324 are used to mark circuits and prevent probe access The lock plate can be reversed as shown in the diagram below if locking is not a requirement and visibility of the hasp is not desirable. 9.0 Multiple PET Installation Note: Use this application when the cable pair capacity exceeds the PET The design of the splice chamber and the grooved cable glands make it possible to stack the PETs vertically, up to three of the same cable pair count and within the diameter limits in the chart in Lockplate Nut Lock Plate in Lock Plate in Locked Position Stored Position A

7 9.02 Mounting the PETs a. Mount the PET bodies using the the cable glands to position them. b. Assemble the feeder cable strain relief according to Section 3.0 and prepare the feeder cable so that 21" of free conductor length will be in the last PET. c. Place cable glands around the free conductors and position into the PETs d. Separate the feeder cable pair assigned to each PET; splice and bond the PETs according to section 4.0. (1 ) minimum A 7
