This guide is written for the administrators responsible for the installation of SteelConnect SDI-2030 and SDI-5030 gateways. 7 1 SteelConnect SDI-2030 and SDI-5030 Gateway Overview The SteelConnect SDI-2030 and SDI-5030 gateways offer enterprise-class SD-WAN for large-scale deployments. This chapter includes the following sections: SteelConnect SDI-2030 and SDI-5030 gateway components on page 7 SteelConnect SDI-2030 and SDI-5030 gateway LEDs on page 8 SteelConnect SDI-2030 and SDI-5030 gateway components The SteelConnect SDI-5030 gateway is a 1U gateway that offers high throughput and support for complex networks. The SteelConnect SDI-2030 gateway is a 1U gateway targeted for small enterprise deployments where the SDI-5030 gateway is too large. The SDI-2030 gateway can also serve as a branch office appliance that has high throughput requirements. The SDI-2030 and SDI-5030 gateways ship with a preinstalled Four-Port 1-GbE copper base-t network interface card (NIC) located in the Intel I/O module bay. The SDI-5030 ships with a preinstalled offload compression card in riser-card slot 2. You can install additional NICs in riser-card slot 1 on the SDI-2030 and SDI-5030 gateways. The SteelConnect SDI-2030 and SDI-5030 gateways support up to four replaceable, hot-swappable, 3.5-inch hard-disk drives (HDD). The HDDs, VGA port, USB ports, and control panel are located on the front panel of the gateway shown in Figure 1-1. Figure 1-1. After the appliance establishes communication with SCM, any port can be used as either an HA port or an uplink (WAN) port. Support for 10-GbE NICs. Support for additional NICs. Control panel descriptions System ID button with integrated LED NMI button (recessed, tool required for use) NIC 1 activity LED (port 6 activity LED) System cold reset button (recess, tool required for use) System status LED Power button with integrated LED LED description Maintenance = blue. Turns the integrated ID LED and the blue server board ID LED on and off. The ID LED identifies the gateway for maintenance when installed in a rack of similar appliances. You can also turn on and turn off the ID LED remotely by using the Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) chassis identify command, which causes the LED to blink for 15 seconds. A duplicate system ID LED is on the back of the gateway to the left of the video port. Puts the gateway in a halt state and issues a nonmaskable interrupt (NMI). This state helps when performing diagnostics for a given issue where a memory download is necessary to determine the cause of the problem. To prevent an inadvertent system halt, the NMI button is located behind the front control panel faceplate and is only accessible with the use of a small tipped tool such as a pin or paper clip. Maps to port 6 on the rear panel. Link = green. Activity = blinking green. The blink rate is consistent with the amount of network activity. Reboots the gateway. Shows the current health of the server system. Healthy = green. Degraded = yellow. Critical = blinking yellow. System on = green. System off = no light. 13 2 Installing the SteelConnect SDI-2030 and SDI-5030 Gateways This chapter describes how to install or mount the gateway. It includes these topics: Site preparations or considerations on page 13 Required tools and equipment on page 14 Rack mounting the SteelConnect SDI-2030 and SDI-5030 gateways on page 14 Powering on the gateway on page 21 Connecting to the network on page 22 Site preparations or considerations Before you install the SteelConnect SDI-2030 and SDI-5030 gateways, make sure that your site meets the requirements suggested in this section. Site requirements on page 13 Safety information on page 13 Environmental considerations on page 14 Site requirements A standard electronic environment where the ambient temperature doesn t exceed 95ºF (35ºC) and the relative humidity doesn t exceed 90% (noncondensing). Ethernet connections are available within the standard Ethernet limit. A clean power source is available, dedicated to computer appliances and other electronic equipment. The rack is a standard 19-inch Telco-type mounting rack. Safety information Carefully inspect the work area in which the gateway will be located to ensure against hazards such as damp floors, ungrounded power extension cords, and missing ground connections. Before you connect the gateway to power, locate the power off switch on the gateway and locate the main circuit breaker for the room in which the gateway is installed. 14 Installing the SteelConnect SDI-2030 and SDI-5030 Gateways Required tools and equipment Before operating the gateway, ensure that external power sources comply with the requirements. Ensure that the ampere rating of all equipment plugged into wall outlets does not exceed the capacity of the outlet. If you require an extension cord, ensure that the ampere rating of all equipment plugged into the extension cord does not exceed the cord s ampere rating. If the gateway is exposed to moisture or condensation, disconnect it from the power source immediately and obtain service assistance. If the gateway exhibits unexpected behavior, such as smoking or becoming extremely hot, disconnect it from the power source immediately and then obtain service assistance. Environmental considerations Ensure that the gateway has at least 12 inches of clearance on all sides to allow for proper ventilation. The gateway generates heat and requires adequate circulation to maintain proper operating temperatures. Never cover or obstruct the gateway ventilation slots. Do not position the gateway near high-powered radio transmitters or electrical equipment, such as electrical motors or air conditioners. Interference from electrical equipment can cause intermittent failures. Do not install the gateway in areas where condensation, water, or other liquids may be present. These may cause safety hazards and equipment failure. For clearance to the front and rear panels, make sure that: front-panel indicators can be easily read. access to ports is sufficient for unrestricted cabling. the AC power cord can reach from the AC power outlet to the connector on the rear panel. access to the rear of the rack is sufficient for connecting the power supply. Write down the MAC address on the top cover label of the chassis before you rack mount the gateway. After the gateway is rack mounted, it is difficult to read the MAC address. 16 Installing the SteelConnect SDI-2030 and SDI-5030 Gateways Rack mounting the SteelConnect SDI-2030 and SDI-5030 The RMK-1-VRAIL kit that ships with the gateway includes a ball retainer lock on the outer member. The lock provides better lock functionality when the inner member is extended. The rail kit also has an inner member that is 4 inches (100 mm) longer for easier gateway insertion. You can adjust the rails to accommodate a 24-inch to 30-inch deep rack. When installed, the maximum rail extension is 16.7 inches (424.4 mm). The rails support a maximum appliance weight of 130 lb (59 kg). Note: The rail kit may contain extra pieces of hardware not needed for your gateway installation. 17 Rack mounting the SteelConnect SDI-2030 and SDI-5030 gateways Installing the SteelConnect SDI-2030 and SDI-5030 To mount the gateway 1. Install the outer rails to the rack posts. Align the brackets to the appropriate vertical position on the rack and insert the fasteners. Move the ball retainer to the front of the slide rails. (See Figure 2-3.) Figure 2-3. Installing the rails to the rack 2. Install the inner members to the gateway. Align the inner member key holes to standoffs on the gateway and move the inner member toward the front of the gateway. Pull the release button in the inner member to release the lock and allow the gateway to close. (See Figure 2-5.) Figure 2-5. Installing the gateway to fixed slides (bezel attached) To remove the gateway 1. Fully extend the slides until they are in the locked position. 2. Pull the release button to release the lock and disconnect the inner member from the slides. (See Figure 2-6.) Figure 2-6. Press the safety lock to release the inner member. (See Figure 2-7.) Figure 2-7. Removing the rail To mount a gateway in a four-post rack using the RMK-1-PRAIL kit Note: The RMK-1-PRAIL kit does not require the use of tools; however, there is an option to use a screw on each rail for added stability. 1. Install the rails to the rack posts. Insert the rail into the rack holes. Use the slide to move the bracket inside of the rack. Once the rail is in the correct holes, release the extendable part of the rail and the bracket will snap in place and lock. (See Figure 2-8.) Extending the slides 3. Position the gateway so that the keyed openings on the rails are aligned with the locating pins on the sides of the gateway. (See Figure 2-10.) Figure Aligning the gateway 4. Figure Pushing the gateway into the rack To remove the gateway 1. Fully extend the rails. 2. Lift the gateway out of the rails and remove the gateway from the rack. Powering on the gateway This section describes how to connect the AC power and power on the gateway. Caution: In European electrical environments you must ground (earth) the green/yellow tab on the power cord, or risk electrical shock. To power on the gateway 1. If your gateway has a master power switch, ensure that the gateway and master power switches are in the off position on the rear of the gateway. Plug the AC power cord into an uninterrupted AC power source. 4. Press the power switch on. If the gateway doesn t immediately power on, press the power switch off, then press the power switch on again. 5. Check the status lights on the gateway. Connecting to the network For the SDI-5030 gateway located at the data center, use port 1 located on the rear panel of the gateway to connect to the SteelConnect Manager (SCM). The remaining ports are general purpose ports. The ports are numbered 1 to 6 along the lower row and 7 to 10 in the upper row of the rear panel. The SDI-2030 gateway can be deployed as a 1-Gbps data center gateway for small enterprises. The SDI gateway can also serve as a branch office appliance that requires high throughput. For the SDI gateway located at the branch, upon bootstrap, port 1 reserved for high availability (HA) and all the remaining ports are used as uplinks. After the appliance establishes communication with SCM, any port can be used as either an HA port or an uplink (WAN) port. Note: The SteelConnect SDI-2030 and SDI-5030 gateways do not ship with cables. Figure SteelConnect SDI-2030 and SDI-5030 gateway port numbers After you have cabled the appliance, use the SCM URL ed to you to login to SCM. The default username and password are: admin and pppp. After a successful log in, you're greeted by the dashboard. Note: To find a SteelConnect Manager instance, the SDI-2030 and SDI-5030 gateways requires internet access; make sure the network provides a DHCP service so the SDI-2030 and SDI-5030 gateways can establish a connection automatically. 24 Replacing SteelConnect SDI-2030 and SDI-5030 Gateway Components Field-replaceable units Field-replaceable units The SteelConnect SDI-2030 and SDI-5030 gateways contains field-replaceable units (FRUs) that you or a certified service technician can troubleshoot, remove from the gateway, and replace without having to send the gateway to a repair facility. Figure 3-1. SDI-2030 and SDI-5030 gateway components Caution: Perform troubleshooting or repairs only as directed in the product documentation or by the online or telephone service and support team. All other servicing should be performed by a certified service technician only. Your warranty does not cover damage due to servicing that is not authorized by Riverbed. Read and follow the safety instructions in the Safety and Compliance Guide. Note: For a list of supported NICs, see Appendix A, Supported SDI-2030 and SDI-5030 Gateway NICs. Important: If your gateway is rack mounted, see Appendix A, Supported SDI-2030 and SDI-5030 Gateway NICs. to remove it from the rack before starting the procedures in this chapter. When you replace gateway components, you must wear a grounded ESD antistatic strap to protect the hardware against electrostatic discharge. 25 Removing and installing the bezel Replacing SteelConnect SDI-2030 and SDI-5030 Gateway Components Use a magnetic Phillips screwdriver to remove screws in the gateway. The magnetic screwdriver ensures screws are not lost in the gateway. Note: You must use approved components for the gateway to function properly. Installation of unapproved components will result in boot failure. To order components, contact Riverbed Support at support.riverbed.com. Removing and installing the bezel Note: The bezel that ships with your gateway might look different from the bezel in the Figure 3-2. To remove the bezel 1. If locked, unlock the bezel. 2. Remove the left end of the front bezel from the rack handle (Figure 3-2, letter A). 3. Pull the left side of the front bezel toward you to release the latches on the right end from the rack handle (Figure 3-2, letter B). Figure 3-2. Removing the bezel To install the bezel 1. Insert the tab on the right end of the front bezel to the rack handle (Figure 3-3, letter A). 2. Push the left end of the bezel toward the gateway until it clicks into place (Figure 3-3, letter B). Installing the bezel Removing and installing the chassis cover You need to remove the top cover to add or replace the components inside the gateway. This section describes how to work with the chassis cover. The gateway must be operated with the gateway cover in place to ensure proper cooling. Removing the chassis cover 1. Power down the gateway and unplug all peripheral devices and the power cable. 2. Remove the screw, if there is one, on the cover and loosen the two captive screws on the rear panel of the cover. Place the top cover on the gateway and slide it toward the front of chassis until the recessed front edge fits smoothly under the chassis edge and the locking pins are fully engaged. Figure 3-5. Installing the cover 2. Install the two captive installation screws at the rear of the unit and then secure the screw at the top if there is a screw. Removing and installing the air duct The gateway requires an air duct for proper airflow. Always operate your gateway with the air duct in place. Note: You need to remove the air duct to access many internal components. To remove and install the air duct 1. The air duct is located on top of the fans. Installing the air duct Replacing disk drives This section describes how to remove and replace the disk drives. Note: If you need to replace a gateway, you cannot move the disks to preserve your data. Each disk is encoded with machine-level information and moving disks is not supported. The SDI-2030 and SDI-5030 gateways are equipped with replaceable, hot-swappable, 3.5-inch harddisk drives (HDD). When replacing a drive, replace only one drive at a time. You must use approved disk drives. Open the new disk-drive handle by pressing the orange release button. 8. Slide in the new disk drive until it mates with the back connectors in the chassis. The disk drive LED lights blue when connected. Figure Inserting the disk drive 9. Press in the disk-drive handle to close it. The new disk drive runs through a self-test automatically. The disk drive automatically begins proper operation with the other disk drives. You do not need to set up or configure the new disk drive. Important: It takes approximately 3 to 4 hours to rebuild a new disk drive. Figure Memory module slot locations In the SDI-2030 the DIMM slots E1, E2, E3,G1, G2, and G3 are empty as there is no CPU in socket 2. Use the lowest lettered and numbered slots first. To replace a memory module in the gateway 1. Power down the gateway. 2. Remove the chassis cover. Press the ejector tabs on the memory slots down and outward, and gently pull the memory module out of the slot. 5. Replace the memory module with an approved memory module of the same size. Note: Replacing the existing memory module with a module of a different size causes the gateway to fail. You must use approved memory modules. Contact Riverbed Support at to obtain the correct memory modules. 6. Align the memory-module edge connector with the slot alignment keys and insert it into the slot. The module slot has two alignment keys that allow you to install the module in only one direction. Figure Inserting the memory modules into the connector slot and securing 7. Press down on the memory module with your thumbs while pulling up on the ejectors with your index fingers to lock the module into the slot. 8. Ensure that all ejector tabs are in the upright locked position. 9. Replace the chassis cover. 10. Replace the power cords and peripherals. 11. Power on the gateway. Replacing power supply units This section describes how to replace a power supply. This gateway is equipped with replaceable, hotswappable power supply units. Caution: Use caution when replacing the power supply units; they can become hot to the touch. To replace a power supply unit 1. The gateways are equipped with six fans that are not hot swappable. You must power down the gateway before replacing the fans. Note: You must use approved fans. To order fans, contact Riverbed Support at To replace a fan 1. Power off the gateway and remove the chassis cover. See Removing and installing the chassis cover on page Identify the faulty fan. Align the fan assembly mounting holes with pins on the chassis base and push down until it is firmly seated. Figure Installing the fan assembly 6. Attach the fan cable to the fan connector on the server board. 7. Replace the chassis cover. Installing or replacing network interface cards (NICs) In the SDI-5030 and SDI-2030 gateways, PCIe riser-card slot 1 is open for configuration with any of the supported NICs. For details on supported NICs, see Appendix A, Supported SDI-2030 and SDI-5030 Gateway NICs. To install or replace a NIC 1. Power down the gateway and remove the power-supply cord. 2. Remove the riser with the bracket by removing the screw. 2. If you are replacing an existing card, carefully pull the card from the riser. If you are not replacing a card, remove the filler panel from the slot by pushing it from the inside of the gateway. 3. The cards are not functional if they are not seated properly. 5. Replace the cover on the chassis. 6. Connect the power cords. 7. Connect the cables. 8.
