INTRODUCTION EA15 Calibration Procedure 4 of Purpose The purpose of this procedure is to provide detailed instructions on how to test and/or adjust Extech Instruments Model EA Policy This procedure will be used as a guideline for instructions needed to properly calibrate Extech Instruments Model EA Scope / Field of Application This procedure will be used by Extech Instruments Calibration Laboratory for detailed instructions on how to test and/or adjust Extech Instruments Model EA Document Security This document is considered to be proprietary. Therefore, this document may not be reproduced or transmitted in any form for use outside of Extech Instruments without the consent of Document References Model EA15 Dual Input, Data Logger Thermometer Checking Procedure. EA15 Data Sheet (EICDS-EA15) Special Terms / Definitions National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Is the internationally recognized body in which all calibrations are traceable through REQUIRED EQUIPMENT The following equipment will be needed to properly calibrate the instrument. (1) Calibrated Fluke Temperature & Pressure Calibrator (Model: 525A) or equivalent. (1) Calibrated Wavetek Universal Calibrator (Model: 9100) or equivalent. (1) Premium Grade Type K Thermocouple extension cable. (2) Two-pin copper connectors EA15 ACCURACY TEST 3.1. Install six (6) AAA batteries into the instrument Connect one end of the K Type thermocouple extension cable to the T1 socket on the instrument.

5 5 of Connect the other end of the K Type thermocouple extension cable to the thermocouple input/output socket on the Fluke 525A Set the Fluke 525A to TC Output Mode Set the Fluke 525A to Celsius and Type K Power up the EA15, and set it to T1, C, and type K Set the Fluke 525A to output C. NOTE: The instrument should read C ± 0.8 C Record the EA15 reading on the proper data sheet. (EICDS-EA15) 3.9. For the remaining test points refer to the Model EA15 Checking Procedure listed in Appendix A. NOTE: For instruments coming in under a RMA number, record all of the readings on the proper data sheet, even if they are not within the specified tolerance. If the instrument is new and out of the specified tolerances, proceed to Section: 4. There is no need to record Out of Tolerance conditions for new instruments If any of the readings were outside of the specified tolerances, proceed to Section: If all of the readings were within the specified tolerances, the instrument is now complete EA15 CALIBRATION ADJUSTMENTS NOTE: To perform the following adjustments, the same equipment is required as indicated on Section: Set the instrument to the Off position Press and Hold the SET, READ, and TYPE keys simultaneously, then press the ON key. NOTE: The instrument will display OFFSET on the upper left corner Connect the (2) two-pin copper cables to the T1 and T2 sockets Connect one side (T1) of the two-pin copper cables to the Wavetek Connect the other side (T2) of the two-pin copper cables to the Fluke 525A Set the Wavetek 9100 and the Fluke 525A to output a value of 0.000mVDC. NOTE: Observe that values from both T1 and T2 are being displayed on the instrument Let the readings stabilize for a minimum of 2 minutes, then press the HOLD key Apply 49.99mVDC to the T1 socket only Short out the T2 socket. (Or input a value of 0.000mVDC) Let the readings stabilize for a minimum of 2 minutes, then press the MX/MIN key Disconnect the two-pin copper cable from the T1 socket on the instrument. NOTE:

6 6 of 7 Leave the T2 socket shorted out Connect a Type K thermocouple extension cable to the T1 socket on the instrument Connect the other end of the Type K thermocouple extension cable to the Fluke 525A Set the Fluke 525A to output C (Type K) Let the reading stabilize for approximately 5 minutes, then press the T1-T2 key. NOTE: The instrument will start beeping, and the display will start changing until it reaches C Power off the instrument after the beeping has stopped Proceed to steps NOTE: Record the data from steps as the Final Reading of the instrument. If the instrument is new, record the data as the Calibration Data.

7 MODEL EA 15 Dual Input, Data Logger Thermometer Appendix: A CHECKING PROCEDURE Page 1 of 1 7 of 7 1. VISUAL - Check for cosmetic problems, scratches, wrong labels, loose labels, etc. 2. Insert 6 each "AAA" batteries and observe correct polarity. 3. Power ON and using the T1/T1-T2/T2 button, preset the EA15's upper display to read degrees C and "T1". Check that the lower display reads degrees C and "T2". 4. Use the Type button to set the type to K. 5. Press the button and verify that eight sections light as the backlight. The backlight should automatically turn off after a few seconds. 6. Test the unit using an input from a MicroCal 2 (or equivalent) set up for a "K" type thermocouple. (Use the yellow type cable and allow a few minutes to stabilize) FUNCTION RANGE INPUT TOLERANCE READING NOTES "K" type -150 to 1370 C C +/-(0.05%rdg+0.75 C) to C +/-(0.05%rdg+0.75 C) -0.8 to C +/-(0.05%rdg+0.75 C) 99.2 to C +/-(0.05%rdg+0.75 C) to Use the C/F/K button to change the EA 15 to read F and test as follows. "K" type -200 to F 0.0 C +/-(0.05%rdg+1.5 F) 30.5 to 33.5 F C +/-(0.05%rdg+1.5 F) to F C +/-(0.05%rdg+1.5 F) to F 8. Optional: Press the C/F/K button again to change the unit to K and test the temperature point below. K type 70.0 to 1642 K K +/-(0.05%rdg+2 K) to K *optional 9. Optional: Change the EA 15 to a "J" type thermocouple and " C". (Use a black type cable) "J" type -210 to 1050 C 0.0 C +/-0.05%rdg+0.75 C -0.8 to C +/-0.05%rdg+0.75 C 99.2 to C +/-0.05%rdg+0.75 C to Test the "T2" input the same as # 6 above. 11. Test that the "Mx./Mn" function works. 12. Test that the RS-232 optical interface function works properly with a computer. 13. Test that the Auto Power Function powers the unit OFF after approximately 30 minutes, then power ON/OFF the unit, re-pack and check for: 1 ea. - manual, interface cable, carrying case and software.
