Tektronix TLA600 Series Version 2008-Jan-1 Dept. of Electrical & Computer Engineering Portland State University Copyright 2008 Portland State University
1 Basic Information This guide provides basic instructions for setting up the Tektronix TLA600 series of digital logic analyzers. The features include: Depending on the model o 4, 68, 102, or 136 channels o Up to 2 GHz (500 ps) timing resolution o Up to 200 MHz State Acquisition Analysis External display only: TLA602, 604 Internal display w/ front panel: TLA613, 614, 622, 624 Common TLA software for all models Copyright Tektronix, Inc. 2 TLA & PC Setup Each Tektronix Logic Analyzer (TLA) contains an internal PC motherboard that has standard keyboard and mouse ports, as well as a video port for connecting to an external video monitor. Microsoft Windows 2000 is the operating system, and the data acquisition and analysis software runs on the TLA itself. In the lab, each TLA shares a keyboard, an external video monitor, and a mouse with a separate generalpurpose computer. This is done by using an electronic KVM switch, as shown in Figure 1. External Video Monitor Keyboard & Mouse V #1 K M #2 KVM Switch PC TLA CECS network LAN The PC is connected to the PSU CECS network. The TLA has no CECS access. There is a direct LAN connection between the TLA and the PC. The PC and TLA run independently from each other. Figure 1: TLA and PC connections to the KVM At any given time, the KVM switch allows only one system (either the PC or the TLA) to be displayed on the monitor and controlled by the keyboard and mouse. To switch from the PC to the TLA, or to switch from the TLA to the PC, press the following three keys on the keyboard in quick succession: Scroll_Lock Scroll_Lock Esc 1
3 Logic Analyzer Probes A logic analyzer probe is used to transmit digital signals between the logic analyzer and the test circuit. The logic analyzer probe is a cable that consists of multiple wires, with each data channel having a dedicated wire (See Figure 2). Flying Lead Set Podlet Connector Flying Lead Set Podlet Connector Module end Figure 2: General purpose 16 channel logic analyzer probe (Tektronix P6417) Clock Connector The front panel of the logic analyzer has a set of connectors (See Figure 3) into which the probe is inserted. Some TLA models have four connectors, while others have eight connectors. For many of the lab assignments, only one connector will be needed (e.g., D0:D1 - color-coded yellow). Power Switch Connectors for logic analyzer probes Figure 3: Connectors on the front panel of the logic analyzer 2
The module end of the cable has a wide connector that is inserted into a matching connector on the logic analyzer (See Figure 4). The connectors are keyed so that they fit only one way. Wide connector Raised bars (keyed) Figure 4: Connecting the probe to the TLA Fully inserted The other end of the cable is split into two groups of wires, with each group capped by a podlet connector. A flying lead set consisting of eight color-coded data leads and one black-tipped ground lead is attached to the podlet (See Figure 5). Flying Lead Set Podlet Connector Figure 5: Podlet with flying lead set 3
The individual flying leads are inserted into IC grabbers (See Figure 6). IC Grabber Flying Lead Figure 6: IC grabber The IC grabber is held like a syringe, with the index and middle fingers resting on the angled supports and the thumb pushing against the spring-loaded plunger. When the plunger is pushed, a pair of tiny metal grabbers extends from the barrel of the IC grabber (See Figure 7). Figure 7: Grabber extending from the barrel The grabbers can be used to clip onto a metal lead on an integrated circuit or some other component. On a protoboard, you can also clip onto a short length of wire if it is more convenient. Figure 8: Attaching an IC grabber to a test device 4
4 Startup Procedure In the following procedure, it is assumed that your test station has an operational TLA and PC. If you want to access your CECS account, you can log onto the PC. However, the TLA does not require the PC in order to run the application software. 1. If needed, attach the IC grabbers to the appropriate flying leads on the logic analyzer probe. 2. With the TLA turned off, plug the logic analyzer probe into the front-panel connector of the TLA. 3. With power turned off to the test circuit, connect the IC grabbers to the test points in the circuit. 4. Turn on the TLA using the power switch on the front panel. a. For the TLA60x series, there is no internal monitor to view the Windows 2000 boot process. b. For the TLA61x and TLA62x series, the internal monitor shows Windows 2000 booting up. 5. Switch from the PC to the TLA by pressing Scoll_Lock Scroll_Lock Esc on the keyboard. If successful, you should now see the TLA booting on the external video monitor. At this point, any input from the keyboard or mouse will be directed to the TLA. a. For the TLA60x series, the Windows desktop is displayed on the external monitor. b. For the TLA61x and TLA62x series, the Windows desktop is spanned horizontally across the internal and external monitors. 6. After Windows finishes booting on the TLA, the application software automatically begins loading 1 and appears in a window on the external monitor (See Figure 9). 7. Configure the software as needed to test and analyze the circuit. This step is not covered in the guide. Please refer to the appropriate chapter in the full software user manual for details (See Appendix 2). 8. Turn on power to the test circuit and use the TLA software to examine the circuit s performance. 9. When done testing, turn off power to the circuit and detach the IC grabbers. 10. Turn off the TLA using the power switch on the front panel. This automatically closes the TLA application, shuts down Windows 2000, and powers down the instrument. 11. Unplug the logic analyzer probe from the TLA. 12. Switch from the TLA back to the PC by pressing Scoll_Lock Scroll_Lock Esc on the keyboard. Note: If there is no picture on the external video monitor, you should check these things first: 1) Is the monitor turned on? 2) Does the KVM need switching? 3) Are all connectors tightened? 1 On some test stations, the TLA waits at the login screen instead of starting the TLA application. If this happens, just type ENTER at the password prompt. 5
Figure 9: Screenshot of the TLA application window 5 Transferring Files After analyzing the test circuit using the TLA, data and screen capture files are often saved to the internal hard drive of the logic analyzer. However, the TLA has no CECS network access, so how can the data files be transferred to the PC for further processing? There are two methods available: 1. Copy the files from the TLA s hard drive to its built-in 3.5 floppy drive. Unfortunately, this may not always be practical since standard floppy disks can only hold 1.44 MB of data. 2. Use the LAN connection between the TLA and the PC. This is often the preferred solution. To transfer files from the TLA to the PC using the LAN, follow these steps: 1. On the TLA, move the files you want to transfer to the directory C:\Temp on the TLA s hard drive. This directory is designated as shared across the LAN. Be sure the files have the proper security permissions for sharing. 2. Switch from the TLA to the PC using the KVM key sequence. 3. Assuming you are logged onto the PC, double-click the My Network Places icon on the PC s Windows desktop. This opens a folder that shows the available network connections. You can access the Temp directory on the TLA by successively opening the following sub-folders: My Network Places Entire Network Microsoft Windows Network Workgroup Tla Temp 4. You can now copy your files from the TLA s Temp directory to any convenient location on the PC s hard drive. As a courtesy to other users, you should delete your files from the TLA after the transfer is done. 6
