2 S&C s M Series Switch Operator is a fully integrated, microprocessor-based operator that lets you automate new and existing overhead distribution switches of nearly any manufacture. Reliability and flexibility are increased, and total installed cost is reduced, by combining electromechanical components, a remote terminal unit, control circuitry, and communications in a single package. The M Series Switch Operator is available in models for reciprocating- and rotating-drive distribution switches. Not Just Switch Operation... Switch Protection Too The M Series Operator monitors speed and motor current data. It uses this information to detect changes in the operating characteristics of the switch caused by environmental and other conditions and to alert the SCADA operator to these changing conditions. Flexible Communications The M Series Switch Operator supports a wide variety of factory- or field-installed communication devices. These communication devices allow a SCADA master station to control and monitor the M Series Switch Operator. DNP 3.0 is the standard communication protocol. S&C s M Series Switch Opera tor also supports the PG&E SCADA (Cooper 2179) protocol. An M Series Switch Operator can accept open and close commands from the contacts of other devices, and it has output contacts for remote indication of switch position. Software Control Architecture The M Series Switch Operator runs under the supervision of a state-of-the-art operating system. The operating system uses a high-level language that s suitable for a wide variety of distribution automation applications. Setup is fast, easy, and precise. Just connect your PC to the standard DB9 serial data port on the faceplate of the M Series Switch Operator, and run the user-friendly lntellilink Setup Software. This Windows -based program lets you view realtime data, manage set points, gather troubleshooting information, and download historical data. You can also perform these functions remotely using the WinMon Graphi cal User Interface. Integrated Power Supply and Battery System The M Series Switch Operator features a single power supply, eliminating the problems inherent in operators using multiple power supplies and batteries. This highly efficient power sup ply delivers temperaturecompensated battery charging and float charging to maximize battery life. The batteries are automatically tested at regular intervals. If battery voltage drops below a specified value, the switch operator is disabled, preventing improper operation of the overhead distribution switch or deep discharge of the batteries. Radio Faulted Circuit Indicator Option When equipped with an optional radio-faulted circuit indicator, the M Series Switch Operator can isolate faults without the need for expensive line post current and voltage sensors. Sectionalizing is initiated when a signal is received from the faulted circuit indicators, followed by loss of control power. 2

3 Voltage and Current Sensing Option When equipped with optional voltage and current sensing, the M Series Switch Operator provides true RMS voltage and current readings plus fault detection. Other features include: Automatic sectionalizing, where sectionalizing is initiated after an overcurrent, followed by loss of control power Loss of phase, where three-phase loads are protected from single-phasing through automatic opening of the switch (The switch operator can be programmed to reclose automatically when three-phase voltage returns.) Data Logging On M Series Switch Operators with out the voltage- and current-sensing option, control voltage and enclosure temperature are continually monitored. The daily maximum and minimum values are logged, as are values at user-selected intervals. On M Series Switch Operators with the voltage- and current-sensing option, daily maximum and minimum three-phase system voltage, current, kilowatts, kvars, and power factor are logged, as are a week s worth of voltage, current, and var readings recorded at 15-minute intervals. Also logged are overcurrent, lossof-voltage, and fault-magnitude and duration data. This information is invaluable for analyzing problems on the circuit and system planning. Troubleshooting and equipment diagnostic data are recorded on all switch operator models. A crystalcontrolled, temperature-compensated clock provides accurate time-stamping of the data.
