1 IMPORTANT The data highway cable, (Belden 9729 or 9730) must be segregated from any mains wiring. The casing of this unit must not be drilled or modified in any way. (For cable entry, knockouts have been provided at the top and bottom of the unit casing). Failure to comply with these instructions will invalidate all warranties stated or implied. MIU/7 The installation of this equipment should only be attempted by a competent qualified electrician. There is a risk of exposure to live mains and it is the installers responsibility to ensure that the supply to the unit is safe before removing covers or opening doors to the equipment. The installation can be carried out without the need to work on exposed live electronics. If in any doubt, contact Polaron for further advice. 1

2 INTRODUCTION The MIU/7 converts a dimmed output to a 1-10V signal and switched mains. It is generally used in a situation where a 4 or 12 channel Millennium rack is supplied, but one channel of 1-10V is required. Note that this unit does not work with a Compact rack due to the filtering components around the power semiconductor. The compact rack has 1-10V available on each channel.the MIU7 will also accept 0-5V or 0-10V inputs and convert to 1-10V with a switched mains output. The 1-10V output will also source current for use with some theatre scroller motors (300mA maximum output at 10V). The output can be reversed for 10-0V for use with metal halide fibre optic projectors. 3 The lightlink System An overview The Polaron dimming system in its simplest form consists of 2 components, a dimmer panel and a control device (generally a control plate). The dimmer panel and control plate are connected by a data cable. BELDEN 9729 / 9730 cable or equivalent is recommended. This cable allows the dimmer panel and control plate to communicate with each other. It is called the datahighway and it carries data messages between the microprocessor in the control device and the Lightlink Scene Processor (LSP) module in the dimmer panel using an RS485 protocol. The datahighway cable consists of 2 twisted pairs with individual screens. One pair carries the data (S+, S-) and the other pair the low voltage power (+24V, 0V). The following layout shows a more complex system. Any combination of Polaron products can be seamlessly linked on the data highway to form a system which is fully customised to meet Client specification. 3

5 LOCATION The interface unit can be installed almost anywhere. However, it should not be installed under water pipes, sprinklers, near to sources of large electro-magnetic fields such as air-conditioning motor assemblies or in areas where the ambient temperature is likely to exceed 40 o C. The unit should be easily accessible for maintenance. MOUNTING The unit should be mounted on a flat surface. Keyholes for fixing screw location are provided at the four corners of the unit. 7 MAINS INPUT CONNECTION WIRING Connection to the mains supply is made at the 2- part connector on the left hand side of the pcb. Only pins 3, 4 and 5 are used. 8 SCHEMATIC FAULT FINDING WARNING! For fault finding it will be necessary to remove the front of the unit, exposing live mains supply. If you have concerns about doing this, please return the unit to Polaron for testing. There are two fuses located on the LSP card, the mains power fuse is located on the left hand side of the board and the data highway power protection fuse which is located on the right side of the board (see page 6). These should be tested first, after which the wire connections should all be checked. If the unit is still faulty, please return it to Polaron for further testing. 8
