4 What is an Integrated System? Wikipedia: An aggregation of subsystems cooperating so that the system is able to deliver the overarching functionality. Enterprise Integration: The process of linking such applications within a single organization together in order to simplify and automate business processes to the greatest extent possible, while at the same time avoiding having to make sweeping changes to the existing applications or data structures. 8 Integrated System Realities THE GOOD: Field systems have become standard and easy SCADA easily incorporates PLCs / RTUs THE BAD: Some alarm systems have minimal functionality Reporting systems are often rigid Historians can be cumbersome and expensive AND THE UGLY: Some specs call for integrated SCADA, asset management, and lab systems that are not buildable due to incorrect products specified, proprietary systems, or lack of understanding.
