4 General Information Important Note Through December 3, 2000, all defective Genius balances are to be returned to the factory in Goettingen; do not perform repair work on these balances. Exception: defective glass parts, such as side, front, back or upper panels can be replaced on location. Prerequisites for working on the Sartorius Genius Balances include considerable experience in working with electronic semimicrobalances and analytical balances. General Instructions Shipping: Press e to turn off the balance, then disconnect the AC adapter. Do not turned off the balance while a calibration function is in progress, as the internal calibration weights will not be locked in position and may damage the weighing system during shipping or handling. Do not connect or disconnect live power cables to or from the balance, as this could result in damage to electronic assemblies within the balance. Overview of the Models ME25S, ME25P, ME44S, ME254S Auxiliary Service Tools and Equipment In addition to standard tools, you will need the following special tools to work on Sartorius Genius Balances: Qty. Designation Order no. Allen-tipped screwdriver 3 mm SARTOCAS service software vers..40 or later or PSION Server, Upgrade vers. 4.8 or later T to be ordered from our Repair Department. 5 Sartorius Genius Service Routine in Brief Check the balance Procedure. Check repeatability (see page for the standard deviation) 2. Check off-center load; adjust if necessary (see page 4) 3. Adjust the span using the built-in calibration weight (see page 0) 4. Use an external calibration weight to check the span; if necessary, determine the exact weight of the built-in weight (see page ) 5. Preferably the compound method should be used to check the linearity; otherwise use calibrated weights (see page 0) Activating the service mode Enter the password and select SETUP to access the service menu. You can check calibration/adjustment and linearity functions and check builtin and external weights without using the Sartocas software or the Psion Server (see page 8). Activating the BPI mode/ releasing write-protection Enabling XBPI communication Enabling SBI communication Activating write-protection Replacing PCBs Entering user weight values This is only necessary when working with the Sartocas program or the Psion Server, for example to program data records after replacing a PCB (see page 7, or see below: Replacing PCBs ). If tolerance values exceed ± 2%, you need to use the service software. Select xbpi from the menu path: Setup>Device parameters>interfaces>serial communication (peripherals), to use the Sartocas program or the Psion Server for adjustment. This overrides BPI access (see page 9). Select SBI from the menu and press the << softkey to confirm; this reactivates the standard data output protocol (SBI mode). The balance must be in the SBI mode to transfer data to peripheral devices. If you press the p key when the balance is in XBPI mode, the error code ERR ERR 30 is displayed (only with software version APC or later; see page 9). Note: If the ERR ERR 30 code is not displayed when you press p, this indicates that the second interface is active. After working with the Sartocas program or the Psion Server, always reactivate the write-protection by selecting Close ; this returns the balance from the BBPI to the SBI mode (see page 7). New data records must be written in the PCBs only if the serial number was not indicated when the new PCB set (includes 2 PCBs) was ordered. Enter user definitions under User-defined weights in the S-CAL menu; this function lets you define the weights used for adjustment/calibration purposes (see page 9). ReproTest For checking repeatability. This routine involves applying the built-in weight 6 times (see page ). Off-center load Span Linearity This must be adjusted only if the tolerance limits in the balance are not the same as those given in the service specifications. You must access the balance from the underside to perform this adjustment (see page 4). You can adjust the span externally using standard weights or with your choice of selectable weights (see page 2). You can adjust the linearity externally using standard weights or with your choice of selectable weights (see page 0). 5

6 Entering maintenance intervals Setting the preload Menu access switch Enter maintenance intervals under Setup>Device parameters>factory settings>next mainten. (see page 9). You can shift the zero point by up to 5% of the weighing capacity, for example to use a different weighing pan or other equipment on the balance without distorting the isocal adjustment functions (see page ). Required only for balances verified for use in legal metrology. Maintenance (Do not perform any repairs at this time!) Important Note:Do not open the balance. Replace only glass parts. Through December 3, 2000, all defective Genius balances are to be returned to the factory in Goettingen. Note: See the Installation and Operating Instructions for care and maintenance procedures. Description of the Models The Genius Series from Sartorius includes both analytical and semimicrobalances. The new Monolith weighing systems give you display resolutions of 0. mg with a weighing capacity of up to 40 g, and readability of 0.0 with a weighing capacity of up to 20 g. Handling and Operating the Genius balances Key Functions MPGEBK0.EPS MPGEBK04.EPS F6 F5 F4 F3 F2 F The program assigns different functions to the 6 function keys, which are numbered from to 6 from right to left (i.e., function key is the > key). a e s d c i p Letter Manual input of letters and special characters (including space, * : / etc.) On/off key Turns the display off (stand-by mode) or on. When switched on, a hardware test is performed. Settings Access to Setup program When the Setup program is closed by pressing s or the << softkey (F6), new settings are saved. Toggle to next application program Clear function Clears the entry Interrupts calibration/adjustment procedures in progress Turns the ionizer on/off Print Printouts/records are output to the printer and the data interface (e.g., printer). 7 Sartorius Genius Service Key and Switch Functions Menu Access Switch Important Note: The menu access switch should remain set to the right because this setting only needs to be changed on models that are verified for legal metrology. If the setting is changed, the balance cannot be calibrated/adjusted. BPI Switch If you work on the balance with external software when the menu access switch is closed, ACCESS SWITCH LOCKED is displayed when you select a calibration/adjustment function. Data can be read, however, when the switch is closed. MA_0005a.EPS Access Switch Note: Activating the BPI Mode Necessary only when using external service software. Press e to turn on the balance. Wait for completion of the startup routine (delayed power-on, test functions) until g is displayed (e.g., on the ME25S). Remove the cover plate under the data output port on the back of the balance. ME_232.jpg BPI-Taster The BPI key can be accessed through this opening. Use a pen, for example, to press and hold the key. 2 V are supplied to the MODE port of the balances processor to cancel the write-protect feature of the internal EEPROM and place the weighing system into BPI communication mode. The weight readout disappears in the display. MA_0005a.EPS After approximately 3 seconds, the interface is in BPI mode. Test: Press p ; E E 30 should be displayed. Release the BPI key; the normal weight display appears again. Zugriffsverriegelungs- schalter Anz20s-d.bmp Important: Close the opening on the back of the balance with the cover plate. Press the e key to turn the ME25S off and on again. Wait for completion of the startup routine (delayed power-on, test functions) until g is displayed (e.g., on the ME25S; see above). The Genius Balance is now ready to work in the BPI operation mode with SARTOCAS software for personal computers (version.40 or later) or the Psion server (version 4.8 or later). After working in the BPI Mode, make sure to set the write-protect again (using the Close function) so that the balance returns to the standard data transfer protocol (SBI mode). Otherwise you will not be able to operate peripheral devices with the balance. 7

14 Off-center Load Checking the Off-center Load Note: The specifications for test weights and tolerances are listed in the Service Specifications Sheets for ME Balances (see page 9). Opening the Draft Shield B C Place the test weight in position on the weighing pan and press TARA to tare the balance. Place the test weight on positions A, B, and C in sequence and write down the values, with plus or minus sign, displayed at stability. A Compare the values with the tolerance limits listed in the Service Specifications for ME Balances (see page 9). If the values exceed the tolerances, the off-center load must be adjusted. Adjusting the Off-center Load The extensive knowledge of the Monolithic weighing system required in order to adjust the off-center load is not described in the manual. It is, however, included in the relevant Sartorius Service Training Courses. 3-Point Adjustment (coarse) 50 mm To make this adjustment, you need access to the bottom of the balance. Place the balance upright on 3 firm higher supports, such as cubes, pillars or weights. 350 mm 355 mm 350 mm The adjustment screws are accessible through two openings in the bottom of the balance housing. First you must remove the caps from these openings. To adjust the off-center load, adjust these two screws as described below. Aut_262.JPG 4

15 Sartorius Genius B C Example: Place the test weight in position A on the weighing pan and press TARA to tare the balance. Place the test weight on positions B and C in sequence and write down the values, with plus or minus sign, displayed at stability. A Pos.A Taste TARA g Pos.B g Pos.C g Aut_265.JPG Only adjust the side with the greater error as follows: Negative error value: Turn the screw counter-clockwise Positive error value: Turn the screw clockwise Change the screw position in small increments and re-measure the off-center load in positions A through C after each adjustment. Repeat this procedure until the off-center load error is within the tolerances at all 3 positions. Note: Important: After adjusting the off-center load, check the linearity and span and adjust them if necessary. Following major adjustments or other extensive work, close the balance and allow it to acclimatize for about 4 hours before checking linearity and span. 5
