Using the UltraRAE 3000
UltraRAE 3000 UltraRAE 3000 Lamp Range Resolution 10.6 ev 50 ppb to 10,000 ppm (VOC mode) 50 ppb 9.8 ev 50 ppb to 200 ppm, for benzene and butadiene; 50 ppb 50 ppb to 5,000 ppm (VOC mode) 11.7 ev 50 ppb to 2,000 ppm (VOC mode) 50 ppb
Agenda User Interface Turning on the UltraRAE 3000 Recommended daily start-up procedure Hygiene mode & displays Alarm signals Programming mode Charging station
User Interface User Interface: [Y/+] tests alarms [N/-] [MODE] (on) Flashlight on/off key Display LEDs and flashlight MODE key Flashlight on/off key
Control Buttons [Y/+] always controls left-hand response & increases numerical values [N/-] controls right-hand response & moves to next digit [MODE] controls center & returns to previous menu
Start-up: Turning On Press and hold [MODE] When display appears, release [MODE] key Instrument performs selftest Final display shows and unit is ready for zero calibration
Start-up: Programmable Zero Calibration Unit performs Zero calibration after warm-up apply zero gas If in fresh air, the UltraRAE can be calibrated, or a Zeroing kit with charcoal tube can be used
Test Pump To ensure that there are no leaks, periodically test the seals. With the UltraRAE 3000 running, place your finger over the end of the inlet probe. The alarm should sound and the pumpstall icon should flash on the display. This indicates that all seals are good. Stop the alarm by pressing [Y/+].
Test Pump If the pump does not alarm or show the stalled-pump icon, then check that all inlet parts are tight and inspect the O-ring for damage (replace it if necessary). After inspection and/or replacing, test again. If there is still no alarm, send instrument in for pump service.
Start-up: Programmable Zero calibration
Start-up: Lamp Alarm Lamp alarm may occur on start-up This indicates that PID lamp has failed to light Wait minutes If Lamp message remains, turn off UltraRAE 3000 and restart Lamp alarm clears and UltraRAE 3000 is ready for use If after restart, Lamp message remains, the PID needs service
Start-up: Humidity Check It is important to check if the instrument responds to moisture 1. Cup hand over inlet or breathe into inlet for seconds 2. Do not block flow If UltraRAE reads >2 ppm, then the sensor needs cleaning
Compound Specific vs VOC Monitor Two main operating modes: Compound Specific Monitor: The factory default mode. After warm-up, the meter takes timed samples for Benzene or Butadiene VOC Monitor: After warm-up, the meter works similar to the MiniRAE 3000 In this mode, the monitor does not need a tube, but make sure cap is air-tight.
Compound Specific Monitor Turn unit on and wait for warm-up to finish. Press [N/-] to advance. Before you start sampling, you must insert a RAE-Sep separation tube into the inlet/holder.
Separation Tube Preparation Open a package of RAE-Sep separation tubes and remove one. Place the tip in the package s tube tip breaker (the small hole on the front) and snap off the tip.
Separation Tube Preparation Turn the tube around and snap off the other end. Handle tubes with care. Tube ends are sharp after ends are broken off.
Inserting Separation Tube Unscrew the front of the sampling probe from the base. Slip the tube into the rubber holder in the front portion.
Inserting Separation Tube Insert the other end of the tube into the middle of the base while turning the front portion to tighten it onto the base s threads. Do not overtighten any portion of the sampling assembly.
Measuring Compound Specific Once the tube is in place, begin measuring by pressing [Y/+]. The display shows a countdown 60 seconds is standard, but sampling time depends on the type of separation tube selected and the temperature. You can abort the sampling by pressing [N/-] at any time.
Measuring Compound Specific Once the countdown is complete, the gas reading is shown. Press [Y/+] to continue sampling with the tube for 15 minutes to establish a STEL reading, or press [N/-] to return to the main menu
Measuring Compound Specific WARNING! At least 1/4 of the tube should still be yellow-orange at the bottom. If not, the STEL value is not valid. Abort the measurement and change the tube. Then do a snapshot test instead of a STEL test. Note: If the STEL is exceeded, the UltraRAE 3000 goes into alarm.
Measuring Compound Specific Press [N/-] to advance to the next screen. If you press [Y/+], you are asked, Clear peak value! Are You Sure? Press [Y/+] to clear the Peak value and exit to VOC operation.
Measuring Compound Specific If you press [N/-], this display is shown. Remove the tube and put the inlet back together. Then press [N/-]. After a few seconds, the UltraRAE 3000 enters VOC mode.
VOC Mode You can step through the rest of the screens by pressing [N/-] repeatedly until you reach the main menu again.
VOC Mode The instrument is programmed to operate in Basic User Level/Hygiene Mode as its default. This gives you the most commonly needed features while requiring the fewest parameter adjustments. Pressing [N/-] steps you from one screen to the next, and eventually return to the main display.
VOC Monitor: Hygiene/Search Mode Two main operating modes: Hygiene Mode: The factory default mode. After warm-up, the meter samples continuously. Search Mode: After warm-up. the pump shuts off and Ready is displayed.

Duty Cycle The pump s duty cycle is the ratio of its on time to off time. The duty cycle ranges from 50% to 100% (100% is default), and the period is 10 seconds. Therefore, a duty cycle of 60% means that the pump is on for 6 seconds and off for four seconds and 100% is always on. Duty cycling is employed by the instrument to clean the PID. A lower duty cycle has a greater effect on keeping the PID clean than a higher duty cycle.
Duty Cycle Important! Pump duty cycling is interrupted when the instrument senses a gas. The pump s duty cycle is disabled when the measurement is greater than the 2ppm threshold and is re-enabled when the reading falls below 90% of the threshold (1.8 ppm).

Maintenance How to clean the PID lamp Use anhydrous methanol (lamp cleaning solution) Use finger cots to hold lamp Dip cotton swap in methanol and clean flat top surface of lamp Dry lamp face with lens tissue
Maintenance How to Clean PID Sensor Always clean sample probe and replace or clean filters FIRST! If PID holds a stable zero after this step then further cleaning may not be necessary Use anhydrous methanol (lamp cleaning solution) Clean sensor by immersion and agitation in cleaning solution Ultrasonic cleaner (Jewelry cleaner) for 15 min. cleans much better than just dipping in Drying the PID Sensor Let air dry overnight Warm air (not hot) will speed drying
