5 MXSSU SAFETY SUMMARY Although there are no dangerous mains voltages present within the equipment, the following general safety precautions as would normally apply, should be observed during all phases of operation, service and repair of this equipment. AROUND THE EQUIPMENT To minimise any possible shock hazard from an external power supply or lightning strike, the chassis or equipment cabinet must be connected to an electrical ground. DO NOT OPERATE IN AN EXPLOSIVE ATMOSPHERE Do not operate the equipment in the presence of flammable gases or fumes. Operation of any electrical equipment in such an environment constitutes a definite safety hazard. 8 . General Description. Overview The MXSSU Serial Splitter Unit (SSU) is designed to allow a single serial connection to be made to multiple base station radios. Although it does not provide the flow control to and from the base stations, it does ensure that all connected equipment operates with correct RS levels and impedances. The MXACU is a compact lightweight standard " rack mounting unit. It is designed to mount horizontally in a " rack frame and occupies RU (mm). The depth of the unit is approx. 00mm. User interface is via the front and rear panels. The rear panel provides access to all connectors and the front panel provides LED indicators for the SSU status and an additional RS port on the front to allow temporary serial access to networked base stations.. Front Panel The MXSSU front panel is illustrated below. 9 MXSSU.. Front Panel Indicators Table - below explains the functions of the front panel LED's. There are green LEDs to indicate the serial transmit state for each base station and they are labelled accordingly. There are also red and amber LEDs. LED Aqua x Red Amber FUNCTION Flashes when data is being transmitted from one of the connected base stations. Flashes when data is being transmitted to all of the connected base stations. Indicates DC supply is present to the SSU. When the supply drops below approximately V, this indicator will go out... Front Panel Connector Table - LED Functions The DB male connector located on the front panel is a secondary host port that can be used for temporary access to the networked base stations from the front of the unit. This can be handy when the equipment is situated in a rack for technical staff. The host connection at the rear can remain connected when this connector is used, however there must be no data activity on it. SPECTRA ENGINEERING 00 Revision.0.0

This is achieved by unscrewing the retaining screws on either side of the plug and then pulling the plug outwards. Type Label Function RJ Socket Host Port Serial port to connect to a PC running MXTools programming software. RJ Socket Slave Port Serial port allowing cascade connection to additional SSU devices for higher port capacity. A to cable is used to connect this port to another device s HOST port. RJ Socket Port n Eight serial ports to connect to the individual transceiver s serial ports. DB Female Alarm Output This connector has an NPN open collector output that is low when the power supply to the device is more than about volts. If the supply drops below this, the output goes open. On this connector is individual inputs that are diode ORed together allowing the SSU to be connected to multiple power supplies simultaneously. The negative connection () of the inputs is common. 11 MXSSU. Installation The MXSSU is securely packed for transport with special end packers within a pasteboard container. Before unpacking the MXSSU, please inspect the packaging for signs of damage and report any damage to your distributor. Upon unpacking the MXSSU, please ensure that all items shipped were received, report any missing items to your distributor. All ports on the rear of the SSU should be carefully examined to ensure that packaging has not become wedged inside them. If you intend to install the radio in an equipment rack consult the suppliers instructions for your system. Spectra Engineering strongly recommends that the SSU be secured into the rack system using four screws through the mounting holes in the front panel near the handles. Equipment connection details are located in Section.. The MXSSU requires less than approximately 0 ma at.vdc for normal operation.. Connections Connections to the SSU are made at the rear and allow connections for up to eight base stations, a common RS port and an additional buffered feedthrough port for cascading additional SSU devices. Please refer to drawing number CS0 in Section. for a view of ACU and MX00 inter-connections. All of the RJ connectors only have pins connected so standard computer networking patch cables can be used for interconnecting the SSU to suitable female D adapters for connection to the MX00 serial port. The Slave port connections are reversed so that a standard computer type network patch lead can be used to directly connect between the Slave port of one SSU and the Host port of the next SSU in line.... Power Supply Power for the SSU is connected to the way pluggable screw terminal block on the rear. Connections are clearly marked on a label on the rear panel. There are three DC inputs on this connector allowing connections to be made to three separate DC supplies with these inputs diode OR-ed before regulation within the SSU. In most installations, because there are more than one base station, it is envisaged that there would be more than one DC supply, and any of them could also supply the SSU with provision for a third input if another supply is available. 14 . Technical Description Please refer to the schematic diagram drawing number CS0 in Section. of this manual.. Power Supply Three power supply. V inputs are fed through D,, & via a fuse and inductor into a V regulator. The volt rail () supplies all of the active circuitry in the SSU.. Serial Drivers Every RS port has it s own RS driver and receiver pair. ICs,, & are the driver receivers for ports to. IC drives the Main port and the secondary port on the front panel, while IC drives the Slave port.. Splitter Logic.. Data from Ports - Because the RS drivers invert the data, the data outputs from each receiver idles high. The normally high CMOS output of each receiver is fed into one input of an AND gate (ICA, ICB, ICD, ICA) and these in turn are fed into other AND gates thus combining all receiver outputs into a single output from ICA that feeds IC pins &. Because of the inverted polarity of the data, the AND gates in this circuit effectively work to OR the data from either input. Data received from any of the ports appears at the RS outputs of IC and thus SK and HDR... Data to Ports - Data is received from either pin or of IC. Pins & of IC are then OR-ed (Again inverted data signal) by ICB & ICD before being fed to the RS driver inputs on pins & of IC, IC, IC & IC... Data to/from Slave Port The Slave port is affectively just another split/combined port, except that it s transmit and receive pins are reversed. 15 MXSSU. LED Drive Each LED is driven by a pulse extender circuit that is connected to an individual data line before the gates within the SSU logic. The pulse extender keeps the LED lit for a short time during the transitions from 0--0 so that the LED doesn t flash or light dimly. The pulse extender circuit is identical for all LEDs and is made up of D, C0, R & ICA. Current is fed directly to the LED via R and out to the display board via HDR. (Description for PORT). Alarm Output The alarm output monitors the rail. When drops below. Volts, pin of IC goes low, turning off TR via ICC & ICD. ICC & ICD also feed via R the front panel power LED.
