Safety: Warning: Please read and understand Hardware Manual before operating DART. Statement of Misuse: If this instrument is used in a manner not specified by IonSense Inc., the protection provided by the instrument could be impaired. IonSense is not responsible for the misuse of this instrument or the ignoring of the safety guidelines outlined in this manual. Safety Labels: Hot Surfaces: DART Source After sustained periods of use the heater inside the DART source will warm surrounding surfaces. The front shield will become very hot to the touch. It is recommended that users avoid touching this surface, or placing fingers near the exit of the cartridge where hot gas exits. 1

Risk of Electrical Shock: DART Source There are no user serviceable parts inside the DART Source, and users should not remove the cover. Cables and surfaces charged with as much as -6000V pose a risk of electrical shock to untrained persons. Opening the DART source inner chamber will release an interlock that will disable all voltage, but it is still not recommended that users attempt to access the inside. Hazardous Voltage; DART Controller There are no user serviceable parts within the DART Controller and users should not remove the cover. The DART Controller contains high voltage supplies and lines that carry as much as V and pose an electrical shock hazard to untrained persons. Voltages: The DART cartridge grid, mounted at the outlet, is live with voltage as high as 530V during DART use. While the ceramic nozzle cap insulates most of this area, the small grid that the gas travels through is exposed to open atmosphere. Users should not touch this grid while in use to avoid electrical shock. 2

Proper Use and Handling of Gas and Gas Cylinders: This information can be found at Click the Safety link on the left. See the gas section of this manual for instructions on the proper installation of gas for the DART. Certifications: RoHS: The DART is RoHS compliant. CE: The DART has been CE Certified. Our DoC (Declaration of Conformity) can be found on our website at the following link under the CE Certifications section: The DoC lists the Safety and Electrical Directives, and the tests within those directives that the DART was subject to. Electrical Safety Installation Category: The DART-SVP is a Category I installation, which is defined as: Equipment having a Ground Pin connection and receives its AC power from a protected (circuit breaker or fused) source having isolation. 3

Operating Environment: Temperature Range The laboratory room temperature must be maintained between 50 and 90 F (10 and 32.2 C). The laboratory must have good air flow in the vicinity of the DART-SVP and must maintain a constant temperature within the ranges stated above. Humidity Relative humidity in the laboratory room must be in between 30 and 70%. Vibrations Floors must be free of significant vibrations caused by other equipment in nearby locations. Power The DART-SVP is designed to accept V~ (2.3A) at 50/60 Hz (200W). Space requirements DART-SVP Vapur Flange: The Vapur attaches directly to the MS Interface. The flange will occupy the entire interface area and extend out a depth of 3-4. DART-SVP Source: The source attaches to the Vapur flange. Its maximum dimensions are: Rev 1 (w x h x d) 10.5 x 6 x 6.25 Rev 2 or higher (w x h x d) 10.5 x 4 x 4 4

DART-SVP Controller: 12 x 11 x 4.5 (extra 0.5 with rubber feet) Controller will operate in horizontal or vertical orientations. Largest Footprint = 12 x 11 Smallest Footprint = 12 x 5 The controller attaches to the source via cable; whose length is approximately 3 feet. Particulate Matter: Air in the laboratory room must not have an excess of dust, smoke, or other particulate matter. Gas Requirements The DART-SVP uses both Nitrogen and Helium gas. The recommended grades are: Helium: at least 4.7 grade (99.997% pure.) Nitrogen: at least 4.8 grade (99.998% pure.) Recommended size of tank is 300L. 5

Mounting DART-SVP Source: Installing the Flange: On all mass spectrometer instruments, except the JEOL AccuTOF, an adapter flange is required to mount the DART. Please refer to your specific interface flange manual on how to mount this adapter flange to your mass spectrometer interface To download interface manuals, please visit the following web page: Mounting SVP (serial numbers 1-199): Once the flange is properly installed, the DART-SVP can be attached to that flange. Source serial numbers SVPS00199 or lower will mount using the ring method. Serial numbers 200 or higher can skip to next section. The mounting ring has 4 holes: 2 contain captured mounting screws; and 2 are for alignment pins. Place the alignment pins in your interface flange first. This will support and align the DART source while it is fastened to the flange. Then, secure the DART-SVP to the flange using the two captured screws. You will need a 5mm Allen wrench to tighten the screws. 6

Mounting SVP (serial numbers 200+): If the DART-SVP source is a Rev 2 or higher version, then it most likely will not need ring for mounting. This version of the DART-SVP has a baseplate that attaches directly to the Vapur flange and a serial number SVPS00200 or higher. The images below show the baseplate with the mounting ring and without. The base plate will attach directly to the underside of the flange. NOTE: AccuTOF and some AB SCIEX instruments will still mount using the ring. Contact IonSense for more information. 7

Place the two provided M6 screws through the holes in the bottom of the base plate and screw into the flange using a 5 mm Allen wrench. 8

Connecting the DART-SVP: Controller: Operational control of the DART source is completed by using the SVP controller. NOTE: There is a quick reference guide of controller connections features, and settings at the end of this document. It may be useful to reference that index during installation. Power: Plug the provided power cable into the AC inlet on the side of the box and into a standard wall outlet. The controller will accept a range of voltage values between V AC and 50 or 60 Hz. If the provided power cable is not compatible with your facility's outlets, you may use a standard pc cable or contact IonSense Service for the proper international power cable. Contact info is at the end of the document. NOTE: AccuTOF instruments will still mount using the ring described in the previous section. Gas: The DART-SVP has inputs for both Helium and Nitrogen gas. The ideal analysis gas depends on your experiment and the desired conditions. The gas inputs are 5/32 press fit tube fittings. PTFE tubing (50ft) for connecting the DART controller to your gas source comes standard with the unit. Below, the gas inputs and outputs are shown: NOTE: Controller serial numbers below 200 will use copper hardpipe instead of PTFE tubing. For specific instructions please contact IonSense. 9

Cut an appropriate length of PTFE tubing to reach from the SVP controller to the gas supply. Be sure to use the provided tube cutter; this is important as a clean straight cut will ensure minimal leakage from the press-to-fit connection. Attach one end to the gas regulator using the Swagelok fittings provided. If the regulator has a female end, use the ¼ hex nipple to convert to it to male. 10

Attach the other end of the PTFE tubing to the to the SVP controller. NOTE: The regulator pressure for both Helium and Nitrogen should be set to PSI (5.5 bar or 0.55MPa). This ensures optimal gas flow. Under/over-pressure conditions will result in a software warning, prohibiting operation. 11

Source Output: For the gas connection between the SVP controller and source, the DART utilizes a Teflon tube to facilitate easier installation and electrical isolation. The Teflon tube is installed at both ends using a press-fit connection. Push the press-fit cable and insert it into the bulkhead on the back of the SVP source. Insert the opposing end into the bulkhead marked Source Output on the controller. Install the HV electrical connection by aligning the red dot on the cable with the one on the bulkhead and pushing the connector in gently. Do not force the cable into the bulkhead. To remove the cable end, pull back the knurled section on the connector to release the HV cable. For safety reasons, turn off the controller before removing the cable. 12

Installing the Linear Rail: Proper rail alignment is important for two reasons 1. Limit Switches: Without properly placed limits the linear rail carriage or experiment modules could strike and damage either the DART source or the mass spectrometer interface. 2. Methods: All predefined methods are based on the position of the rail and limit switches and won t work properly without correct alignment. Software This guide assumes software version or higher is installed on the SVP controller. Any lower version may have methods that do not work properly with this positioning guide. Please contact IonSense at or service@ionsense.com if a software update is required. A software updating guide can be found on our website here: 13

Linear Rail HW10029 / HW10039 The HW10029 is the left version, and the HW10039 is the right version. They are mirror images of each other, so for the purposes of alignment they can be treated as the same. Front Side Label: a small white label on the front side of the rail near the motor. 14

Alignment: Limit Switches Before aligning the rail with the source, the limit switch placement should be checked. Home Switch The home switch is the limit closest to the motor. The distance from the edge of the carriage and the end of the motor should be 55 mm. 15

Limit Switch The limit switch is the switch furthest from the motor. The distance from the far carriage edge and the end of the linear rail should be mm. Adjusting Switch Placement If either of the switches are not stopping the rail carriage in the proper place than they can be adjusted using a small Philips head screwdriver. Loosen the screw holding the switch in place so that it can be moved easily. 16

Move the switch until the orange light comes on; this means the switch no longer detects the carriage. Move your carriage into the appropriate position (using distances mentioned previously), and then move the switch back into place and tighten screw. Metric Scale Alignment In addition to measuring the distances from the carriage, one can also check alignment using the metric scale printed on the rail. When in the home position the front carriage edge should align with 0mm, and when at the limit it should align with the 170mm mark. 17

Mounting to Source: Once the limit switches are in the correct positions, the rail can be aligned with the source. Slide the linear rail into the cradle on the source baseplate. Move the rail until the divot on the bottom matches up with the positioning plunger on the base plate. The end of the rail should extend 55.5mm from the edge of the base plate. 18

Secure the position of the rail by tightening the 2 set screws inside the base plate using a 1.5mm allen wrench. The rail is now set and ready to use. DART-SVP Rev 1 (serial numbers 1-199) The revision 1 DART-SVP source has a removable linear rail cradle. To mount the linear rail remove cradle from the base plate using a 3mm allen wrench. Once the cradle is removed install the linear rail and then re-attach the cradle to the baseplate. 19

Accessing the DART-SVP Software from a PC Configuring the Ethernet Connection NOTE: If you choose to control the DART-SVP from a PC, it is suggested for simplicity that the DART-SVP controller be connected to a dedicated Ethernet port, and not through a hub. USB to Ethernet Adapter If you do not have an Ethernet port available on your PC, you should use the provided USB to Ethernet adapter. Plug the USB end into your PC and insert the DART SVP Ethernet cable into the other end. Windows will automatically install the driver for it, but you may need to insert the CD if a driver cannot be found. The connection needs to be configured, as described below. It is recommended that you rename the connection to DART-SVP to distinguish it from you other network connections. In order for the DART- SVP to communicate with the PC, the IP Address for the Ethernet connection must be configured by following these steps: To access the Network Connections directory on the PC go to Start Control Panel Network Connections. 28

Once the Network Connections directory has been accessed, locate the Ethernet connection that you wish to dedicate to the DART-SVP connection. Right Click on the desired Ethernet connection icon and select Properties. 29

Once the Local Area Connection Properties dialog box opens, scroll down to select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click on Properties button. In the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties dialog box that opens up change the IP address settings to the following: - IP address: Subnet Mask: Default Gateway: Preferred DNS server:

The Ethernet port is now configured. Select Ok to save the IP properties configuration and exit out of any windows that were previously opened by selecting Ok. NOTE: Once the Ethernet port is configured for communication with the DART-SVP controller, it should not be used for any other communications unless the default settings are restored. It s recommended that the port selected be dedicated to the DART. 31

Connecting to DART-SVP Software via Web Browser Now that the Ethernet port has been correctly configured, open the web browser installed on the PC. - We strongly recommend using the latest version of Mozilla Firefox. - - JavaScript must be enabled. - In the web browser enter the following address: and hit Enter. The DART-SVP Free Run page should appear on screen. The web-based user interface for the DART-SVP software has the same functionality as the ipod touch based user interface. 32
