1 Creating a VoiceThread This HelpSheet has been created to assist CDU staff to understand the basics of creating a VoiceThread. This HelpSheet will also cover how to comment and share VoiceThreads. ALERT: To access VoiceThread you must first create a tool link within Learnline. Please see the HelpSheet Add a VoiceThread link in Learnline for further instructions. Step 1. Navigate to the VoiceThread tool link created within a Learnline site. Step 2. To create a new VoiceThread, go to the top of the page and click Create. 2 Step 3. Click Add Media or drag and drop the files onto the desktop. Step 4. Choose where you would like to add media from. (a) My Computer - file types accepted include images, audio, video, documents (word, pdf, spreadsheets) and presentations (though animations will be lost). More on file types: (b) URL works if you have a direct link to a file on the internet, so the web address needs to end with a file extension (.pdf,.doc for example). The exception to this is YouTube where it is possible to use the URL to load content into VoiceThread. Make sure the content is not copyright protected. Step 5. Give the VoiceThread a Title within the Title/Description tab. Office of the Pro Vice Chancellor Education and Student Success Page 2 of 5

3 Step 5. You can also set other Thread Settings, including the Playback Options from within the Playback Options tab. (c) Please note, Enable Comment Moderation, if selected, prevents participants from seeing each other s comments, but the creator can see all of them. Information on Comment Moderation can be viewed in a short YouTube video (1min30) Step 6. Click Save and repeat for additional slides by clicking on Add Media. Step 7. After the files upload, they will appear as slides. You can delete and edit or re-order by selecting and dragging into the new order. 4 Step 8. To add Comments, select the slide you wish to comment on (the selection is shown by a blue outline) and click on Comment. For more information about Commenting, watch the short YouTube video (2min) Step 9. Click on the comment icon ( ) to choose the format of your comment: ABC - text comment Telephone - only works in United States and Canada. Telephone icon can be removed in Playback Options Microphone - record an audio comment with your computer microphone Video - record a video comment with your computer webcam Upload - upload prerecorded audio or video comments Step 10. When finished commenting, close the VoiceThread by the X in the top right corner. Step 11. You can now Share your VoiceThread or leave it and use it later. 5 Step 12. There are many options for sharing. You can share with individuals and groups. A group is automatically created for each of the teaching units you have added a VoiceThread link to with all students from that unit. You can also set up groups. To share with a group/unit, (d) Select the appropriate Learnline unit. (e) Select what participants in the course will be allowed to do. (f) Click Share. Step 13. You will see a Success notification, and participants will be able to access the VoiceThread through course view and the VoiceThread home page. If you have not yet done so, add a VoiceThread tool link in the Learnline unit for students to access.
