Preface This manual contains all information necessary for calibration and service of the DPA 75. Before using the KA 75 please read this manual carefully. 4 Safety Precautions Safety Precautions Please read now and avoid damage and injury later! - The Calibrator KA 75 is built in accordance with today s state of engineering and is safe to operate. Individual components and the finished unit are inspected continually by our qualified staff within the framework of our Quality Assurance Provisions. Each unit is subjected to thorough testing prior to shipment. In any case read Operating Instruction before using the unit! Only authorized personnel! Use the KA 75 as directed! - It is imperative to every person who is involved with connection, start-up, operation and maintenance to have read and understood the complete Operating Instruction. - The user is reponsible for ensuring that no unauthorized personnel works with the KA 75. He has an obligation to report immediately any changes to the unit which affect its safety. - Use as directed: The KA 75 may be used exclusively for calibrating the DPA 75. Protect Calibrator from contamination and clean with petroleum ether. The serial nos. of operating unit and of H.V. unit must correspond because these components are adjusted to each other. The local safety and accident prevention regulations are always applicable to the operation of the KA 75 unit. 4

5 Warranty Terms Warranty Terms At the customer s written request we undertake to repair or replace at our discretion and as quickly as possible all parts that become faulty or useless as the demonstrable result of poor material, faulty design or defective execution. We shall bear the costs of any faulty parts requiring replacement, but not the costs of transport to us and back to the customer, nor the costs of packing and insurance! 12 month warranty The 12 month warranty time starts with delivery. We shall not be liable for any damage resulting from normal wear and tear, improper handling, non-observance of the Operating Instruction! We shall also refuse to accept any liability if the customer carries out repairs or changes to the unit himself or has others carry out them! The warranty does not cover damage in transit, batteries, fuses and any readjustments in accordance with the Operating Instruction! 7 General Information about Calibration and Service Test 1. General Information about Calibration and Service Test General In this day and age it is necessary to repair but also to calibrate equipment as quickly as possible. These procedures must be carried out not only very fast but also they must be documented too. This is why Calibration and Service Test is realized by using the PC. Communication between PC and DPA happens via an RS232 interface. The PC Service Program (SP_DPA) makes a distinction between Calibration Mode and Service Mode. Before using this program please read file Readme carefully. Calibration Mode The Calibration Mode contains a Service Test as well as the calibration itself. The calibration values are indicated on the display. The Service Test data is checked but not indicated. If the calibration procedure is finished correctly the DPA is ready for operation. First, the calibration data is printed to a blank test report. Subsequently, the service data is printed onto an empty sheet. Service Mode If the calibration procedure cannot be finished correctly the Service Mode must be activated. Within this mode the exact test values can be readout and indicated on the display. The Service program recognizes automatically if the test values are within the specified tolerance range or not. Accordingly, each test value is confirmed with ok or failed! Additionally, a description of possible error causes can be called for each test value. Test Adapter If no error can be detected within the Service Mode despite faulty function of the DPA it is possible to simulate the H.V. unit with the help of the Test Adapter DPA Tester. Even if no error can be detected here the error is within the H.V. unit. Self Test After switching on the unit the DPA carries out a Self Test. If an error is detected an error message is indicated on the display. Using the error message no. the field engineer can find out the problem (ref. to error message list). 7

8 Calibration Mode 2. Calibration Mode (Service Instruction ) Calibration of the DPA is carried out using a PC (IBM compatible) and the Calibrator KA 75. Voltage values of the KA 75 can be automatically transfered to the PC via RS232 interface or manually via keyboard. Used devices - KA 75 - PC with serial interfaces and printer (Laser Jet II / III or IBM Graphics printer) - Test vessel, filled with practically new insulating liquid - Thermometer Visual check - Assembly, mechanical connections / damages Functional check of DPA without side covers and carrying handle - Check hood contacts (switching point, electrical function) - Place KA 75 onto the H.V. contacts of the DPA 75 and connect acc. to fig. 1 - Switch on KA 75 and wait for 5 minutes - Connect PC COM 1 via RS232 Protection to the DPA 75 and COM2 to the KA 75 - Connect to earth DPA 75, KA 75!! - Switch on DPA - Start PC Calibration Program (print report) - Compare indicated temperature with thermometer (max. deviation +/- 2C) - Deactivate Service Mode (switch on/off DPA again) - Use unit in battery operation - Check RBM: put on vessel with short-circuited electrodes (0 spacing) start single test RBM is activated: message RPM appears - Check buzzer of electrode adjustment (open hood and short-circuit electrodes) - Carry out long-time test (4 test cycles test 5): put on vessel with oil (adjust electrode spacing so that breakdowns happens at approx. 60kV) Start standard Test 5 (1st pause=0, stirrer 1. pause=0, kv/s=2, pause=2min, stirrer=1min, no. of tests=const) - Check battery capacity (menu battery) - After installing side covers and carrying handle visual inspection (assembly, dirt, scratches, paintb) - Set date and time - Check type plate - Check accessories! 8

10 Service Mode 3. Service Mode Service Test is started from PC (IBM compatible). Test values are indicated on the display. For each test value a help text can be indicated giving information about possible error causes. 11 DPA - Tester / Error Messages 4. DPA Tester With the help of the DPA Tester the H.V. unit can be simulated. At this adapter the test voltage as well as the interrupting current can be simulated. LED indicates operating mode of stirrer. Procedure - Disconnect mains (battery operation) - Remove right side panel - Remove spacer of gas pressure cylinder support - Connect DPA Tester to the operating unit (25-pin D-SUB plug) - Switch current interruption to OFF - Start single test (DPA must start up to 75kV) - Check sine-shape during full-load using an oscilloscope (connect resistor 15E/50W to the DPA Tester) - At 74kV the sinusoidal voltage is approx. 23 Veff - Switch current interruption to auto - Start single test (DPA switches off a 16kV) - Start ASTM 1826 standard test. LED must light up (stirrer running) - If these tests are successful error must be within the H.V. unit (ref. to section 5 Error messages RBM) 5. Error Messages If an error appears on the DPA display this error can be identified with the help of the error list. Next step is to proceed as described under section 3. Service Mode. If this is not possible because the unit, as an example, be with the customer the problem can be further localized via the available help texts within the Service Mode. After each H.V. test a comparison is made between the test value and the theoretical nominal value when starting up the high voltage. If the difference of these values is higher than specified by the upper diagram several times successively the high voltage is switched off immediately and a message appears on the LCD. In any case, this RBM function (Real breakdown monitoring) requires a calibration!! 12
