ION219-A chassis description Chassis The ION219-A 19-Slot Chassis contains a fixed 100Mbs full duplex bus with pointto-point connection with all endpoints, which greatly increases the data bandwidth and response time. Each endpoint in the system (Slide-In Card (SIC), Backplane Controller (BC), power supply (PS) and Agent) has a dedicated port on a 24-Port non-blocking, full-bandwidth 100Mbps Ethernet switch, supporting simultaneous traffic between all endpoints. You can achieve an end-to-end fiber integration solution by paring the modules in a high-density ION chassis with the modules in another ION chassis, or a Transition Networks Point System standalone device. To take full advantage of all the features and functions available with the ION chassis, an ION Management Module (IONMM) is required. The IONMM connects to the chassis backplane and communicates with the individual installed SICs. The IONMM controls the specific features and functions of each SIC. The ION219-A allows the network administrator to connect various copper and fiber-optic network media. The ION219-A chassis provides installation space for up to 19, single-slot SICs. See Figure 1. Figure 1: Front Chassis management methods The ION219-A chassis can be managed and monitored via the IONMM Management Module using the following: An SNMP application such as Transition Networks management software installed at a remote computer A remote Web browser A command-line interface (CLI) at an attached terminal Telnet Continued on next page 24-Hour Technical Support: International:

Caution Read the installation instructions before connecting the chassis to a power source. Failure to observe this caution could result in poor performance or damage to the chassis and its SICs. Caution Only trained and qualified personnel should install or replace the ION210-A chassis. Failure to observe this caution could result in poor performance or damage to the chassis. Safety considerations The following considerations will help to ensure your safety as well as protection of the chassis and its contents from damage. This list does not contain all the potentially hazardous conditions that could exist at the installation site, so exercise caution at all times. Always unplug all power cords before installing or removing the chassis. Keep the chassis area clear and dust free during and after installation. Keep tools and chassis components away from walk areas. DO NOT place containers containing liquid on top of the chassis. Continued on next page 24-Hour Technical Support: International:

Installation overview, continued Lifting safety Even though the ION219-A chassis weights less than twenty (20) pounds, use proper lifting to move the chassis about. Keep your back straight and lift with your legs, not your back. If you need to bend down to lift the chassis, bend at the knees, not at the waist to reduce potential for straining your lower-back muscles. See Figure 3. Figure 3: Unsafe Lifting Techniques Electrical safety Follow these basic guidelines when working with any electrical equipment: Disconnect all power and external cables before installing or removing the chassis. Do not work alone when potential hazard conditions exists. Never assume that power has been disconnect from the circuit always check. Carefully examine your work area for possible hazards such as wet floors, ungrounded power extension cables, and missing safety ground. WARNING Do not work on the chassis, connect, or disconnect cables during a storm with lightning activity. Failure to observe this warning could result in an electrical shock or death. 24-Hour Technical Support: International:

Site requirements Site requirements To assure normal operation and avoid unnecessary maintenance, plan the site configuration and prepare the site before installation. After installation, make sure that the site maintains an ambient temperature of 0ºC to 50ºC (32ºF to122ºf). Caution To prevent the chassis from overheating, do not operate it in an area that exceeds the maximum recommended ambient temperature 50ºC (122ºF). AC power The IONPS-A, AC power supply can operate on input voltage and current within the range of 100 to to 60 Hz, rated at 200 watts max output. Caution The power outlet must be located near the equipment and must be easy to access. WARNING If the voltage indication on the label is different from the power outlet voltage, DO NOT plug the chassis into that receptacle. A voltage mismatch can cause equipment damage and may pose a fire hazard. WARNING Take care not to overload the circuit that supplies power to the chassis. Failure to observe this warning could result in a fire. WARNING The chassis must be grounded. Make sure that the host is connected to earth ground during normal use. Failure to observe this warning could result in electrical shocks. Continued on next page 24-Hour Technical Support: International:

Site requirements, continued Plant wiring The following guidelines consider the plant wiring and cabling at your site. When planning the location of the chassis, consider the distance limitations of signaling, electromagnetic interference (EMI), and connector capability. When wires are run from any significant distance in an electromagnetic field, interference can occur between the field and the signal on the wires. If wires exceed recommended distances, or if wires pass between buildings, consider the potential for lightening strikes. The electromagnetic pulse (EMP) caused by lighting or other high-energy phenomena can easily couple enough energy into unshielded cable to destroy electronic devices. Site environment The chassis can operate as a standalone system or can be mounted in a rack in a secure wiring closet. It requires a dry, clean, well-ventilated environment. An internal fan system pulls air from the front of the system and exhausts it through the chassis rear. The flow of ambient air must be maintained to ensure proper operation. If the airflow is blocked or restricted, or if the intake air is too warm, an overtemperature condition will occur. To ensure normal operation and avoid unnecessary maintenance, plan your site configuration and prepare your site before installation. After installation, make sure the site maintains an ambient temperature of 0ºC to 50ºC (32ºF to122ºf). Keep the area around the chassis as dust free as possible. Equipment racks Multiple chassis can be rack-mounted with little or no clearance above and below them. However, when mounting the chassis in a rack with other equipment or when placing it on the floor with other equipment located close by, ensure that the exhaust from other equipment does not blow into the intake of the chassis. 24-Hour Technical Support: International:

Installation Installing the chassis The ION219-A chassis can be installed in a standard 19-inch rack or on a table, shelf, or other stable surfaces. Tabletop installation The ION219-A chassis comes with nine (9) rubber feet for installation on a table or other flat, stable surface in a well-ventilated area. If tabletop installation is desired, remove the rubber feet from the card and place them on the bottom of the chassis. Distribute the feet so that the chassis is level when placed upright. Rack installation The Maximum Recommended Ambient Temperature (TMRA) for the ION219-A chassis is 50ºC (122ºF). When installing the ION219-A chassis in a closed or multiunit rack assembly, the operating ambient temperature of the rack environment could be greater than room ambient. Note: Reliably grounding is required for rack-mounted equipment. Power supply connections other than direct connections to the branch circuit (e.g., use of power strips) should be employed. WARNING Select mounting bracket locations on the chassis that will keep the chassis balanced when mounted in the rack. Failure to observe this warning could allow the chassis to fall, resulting in equipment damage and/or possible injury to persons. Continued on next page 24-Hour Technical Support: International:

Remove the 2 screws holding EURO block containing the power wires. 4. Remove and keep the two (2) 6-32 philips head screws, securing the power module to the chassis. 5. Carefully pull the power module from the chassis. 6. Locate the new power module. 7. Install the Euro Block containing the power wires. Continued on next page 24-Hour Technical Support: International:

Replacing the DC power supply, continued Step Action 8. Position the power module at the chassis slot, as shown in Figure 25. Figure 25: Replacing the DC Power Supply 9. Slide the power module completely into the chassis slot. 10. Insert the two screws to attach the power module to the chassis. 11. If necessary, attach the chassis grounding log. 12. Switch the main power source to the ON position. The fan will be operations and the power LED will be lit. 24-Hour Technical Support: International:

Optional AC or DC power supply module Dual power supplies Alternatively, you can install a second AC or DC power supply module in the same chassis (power redundancy). Figure 26 shows two installed AC power supply modules. Figure 26: Rear 2 AC Power Supply Modules Installing Power supply To install the optional power supply module, do the following: Step Action 1. Remove the grounding hardware if necessary. 2. Remove the mounting screws from the blank plate and keep the two mounting screws, shown in Figure Remove the blank plate and keep it for future use. See Figure 27. Figure 27: Remove Blank Plate Slot Cover Continued on next page 24-Hour Technical Support: International:

Optional AC or DC power supply module, continued Installing Power supply (continued) Warnings DO NOT insert the power cord into an AC power receptacle before installing the power supply module into the chassis. Failure to observe this warning could result in an electrical shock. Step Action 4. Make sure that the AC power cord IS NOT plugged into external AC power source. 5. Position the power supply module as shown in Figure 28. Figure 28: Power Supply Module Installation (Secondary Slot) Continued on next page 24-Hour Technical Support: International:

Optional AC or DC power supply module, continued Installing power supply module (continued) Step Action 6. Slide the power supply module fully into the chassis until it seats to the backplane Note: Upon insertion, the fans on the secondary power-supply module will be operation. The fans will operate regardless the position of the ON/OFF switch. Since the secondary power module is used for redundancy, it receives power from the chassis backplane to operate its fans, which is supplied by the primary power supply module. When the primary power-supply module becomes non-operational, the secondary power supply module powers the chassis. When a power supply module is inserted into the primary slot and becomes operational, the secondary power supply module resumes its previous redundancy state. There is no power sharing or power balancing. 7. Insert and tighten the two mounting screws. See Figure Insert the power cord into the power receptacle on the power supply module. 9. Plug the other end of the power cord into an external AC power source. 10. Press the power switch to the ON position. 24-Hour Technical Support: International:
