14 Suggested Systems The following systems are suggested installations for typical sail and power boat applications, both single and dual station. Additional Data & Mega repeaters can be added up to a maximum of 32 instruments per system. 14

15 FAQs How do I reset the system? Insome cases you may want to reset the instrument to the factory settings. To do this, power the instrument down, press and hold the two outer keys and turn the power on. Note that this does not reset the Distance Log on the Speed and Combi Instruments. What is the point of the Hand Remote disable function? Imagine you have a dual station installation, for example on a flybridge power boat, with a remote control to operate the instruments on the inside steering position. Here, the instruments are often fitted on an overhead console, and/or would be rear mounted, making the remote control necessary. However, the Remote would also control the instruments on the flybridge, which would be confusing and unnecessary - you only want to control those on the inside. So the solution is to disable the remote control facility on the flybridge instruments. How do I disable/re-enable Remote Control? On the instrument in question, enter calibration mode, press or until the display shows CTRL and press. The display will show the current setting - ON for remote control enabled or OFF for remote control disabled. The setting can be changed using the or keys. To set the selected mode, press. The display will then return to the main calibration menu. Press Flybridge Front mounted instruments - no remote control required Remote control disabled Main Steering Station Rear mounted instruments - remote control required. Remote control enabled to exit to the main calibration menu at any point. Any changes will only affect that specific instrument. How do I re-enable Remote Control functionality on a rear mounted instrument? If you accidentally disable the remote control facility on a rear mounted instrument this is a problem. How do you control the instrument - you can t get at the keys, and you ve told the instrument to ignore the Remote Control. If you ve done this, the following procedure will allow Remote Control access to all instruments on the network - With the power to the system off, press and hold the key on the Remote Control while turning the power on. The Remote Control will now be able to access all instruments on the network temporarily (if the system is then switched off and on again without changing anything, the instrument will revert to its previous settings). Select the instrument which has been incorrectly disabled using the Remote Control and re-enable the remote control facility through the calibration menu. Why can t I enable shop mode using the Remote? The remote control can control virtually any function that you can control on the instrument, because when you press a key on the Remote, it sends a data bit down the network which is interpreted by the receiving instrument as a press of the respective key and acts on it. However, what it can t do is tell the difference between a quick press and a long press, and you have to press and hold the key for at least two seconds to enter and exit Shop Mode on the instrument, to stop users accidentally going into Shop Mode when on their boat. Since you can only access Shop Mode through the instrument s own keypad, if you re making a shop display with rear mounted instruments, you should set them up in shop Mode before you fix them to the panel! When do I need to use a terminator? IS12 instruments intercommunicate across a network bus, and like any bus system, it needs to be terminated at both ends. The power cable contains a terminator at one end (which is why you should always use an IS12 power cable). The other end is either terminated by the Wind Transducer (which has one), or by a plug in Terminator supplied with some of the instruments. If the system is split using a three-way joiner, plug the terminator into the last instrument at the end of the longest spur. A system should never include more than two terminators, including the power cable and the wind transducer. When you don t need one - 1) If you only have one instrument in the system, because it has nothing to communicate with. 2) Any system with a Wind instrument - the Wind transducer has a terminator inbuilt. 3) Any system that already has a plug in terminator fitted. Don t fit more than one! When you need one - A system of more than one instrument which includes a cable run of more than 5m and no wind transducer. 15

16 FAQs What happens to the Depth sounder if it crosses turbulence? Normally the depth displayed will be extremely accurate, however there are certain circumstances where the accuracy of the signal can be adversely affected. If the boat is crossing the wake of a large vessel, the turbulence caused by the vessel s passage will create air bubbles which could interfere with the depth sounder signal - Depth pulse is reflected by the air bubbles, not the sea bed What are the pin outs and core colours of an IS12 data cable? Red 12v+ Black 0v Blue Data High Yellow Data Low What do the coloured ends of the IS12 cable plugs mean? Red - Terminated Yellow - Power & Data, Unterminated As this is due to the quality of the water, the depth instrument cannot compensate for this, but will attempt to reacquire an accurate signal. If this occurs, the depth pulse will likely be reflected off the air bubbles rather than the sea bed, in which case the depth will appear to drop rapidly to as little as 0.6m, which may cause the shallow alarm to sound (if it has been set). However, after several seconds the depth instrument will work out that the signals it is receiving are not accurate. Upon loss of signal, the depth instrument will display the following sequence, indicating the depth displayed is not current - 1. The last depth reading will be held for approx 15 secs 2. The display will then flash the last depth reading for approximately one minute 3. The display will then show dashes - LIGHT DEPTH DEPTH SHALL DEEP The display will show dashes until re-acquisition of signal. M INFO Why do the Wind and Compass transducers plug into the network ports, while the Speed and Depth transducers plug into terminals? The Speed and Depth transducers can be described as passive transducers - they merely collect the raw data, but rely on an instrument head to process that data into a useable format. This is why they plug directly into the back of the Speed, Depth or Combi instruments. Wind and Compass transducers are active transducers - they have internal processing circuitry and transmit processed data directly onto the network. They therefore do not rely on a display head to function, and so can be plugged in anywhere on the network What is the maximum length of cable I can have? The total length of cable in the system should be no more than 100m, which should be more than adequate for any applications requiring IS12. What is the maximum number of units I can install in a single system? The manuals state 32 display heads, but the actual figure is 40 nodes. A node is a display head or an active transducer, eg Wind or Compass (see previous question). I want to fit repeaters. What are my options? For a large digit repeater (like the Speed and Depth instruments), choose the Mega (IS12 Mega:R). If you want a multi-line repeater (like the Combi), which can display longer format data like Lat & Long, choose the Data (IS12 Data:R). If you want an analogue Wind or Compass repeater, order an IS12 Wind:R or IS12 Compass:R respectively. You can fit as many of these repeaters as needed (up to the total system maximum stated above). Don t forget to fit a Network Terminator if you need one. 16

17 FAQs / NMEA Info How reliable is the Wind transducer? The IS12 Wind transducer evolved from the very successful Corus and IS15 Wind transducer. We have made it smaller, lighter and easier to fit. The mounting bracket is extremely sturdy, and as the electrical and mechanical connections between the bracket and the wand are separate (unlike the majority of other brands in the market), it doesn t suffer from electrical failure due to fatigue from the wand flexing in high winds. The transducer underwent rigorous environmental and severe vibration tests, tested alongside several other well known brands and the results indicated that IS12 was one of the best. Are the instruments waterproof? The instruments and transducers are classed as weatherproof, meaning they are designed to operate in a marine environment without failing. This means they have to withstand salt spray, regular inundation and temperatures varying between Artic and Tropical without failing or filling with water. All the units were tested thoroughly in an environmental chamber, simulating years of exposure in the real world. However, they are not waterproof in the sense that the Simrad handheld radios are waterproof - they are not warranted against total immersion for a prolonged period of time. NMEA Input/Output NMEA sentences will only be transmitted if the relevant master unit is present on the IS12 system, i.e the Wind Transducer must be present for the Wind sentences to be generated.
