1 Veritas Appliance Hardware Service Procedure Replacing hard disk drives in a Primary Storage Shelf or an Expansion Storage Shelf Document Number: 137 Version: 3.2 (03/06/17) Purpose This document describes the process for replacing a faulty disk drive in a Primary Storage Shelf or an Expansion Storage Shelf. Affected Models NetBackup 5330 Appliance Velocity 7330 Appliance Electrical Safety The static discharged by human bodies can damage static-sensitive components on the boards. When installing and maintaining the equipment, observe appropriate electrostatic safety precautions to prevent personnel injuries or device damage. When operating a device in an electrostatic sensitive area, you must take electrostatic-discharge (ESD)-preventive measures. These include wearing ESD-preventive gloves, an ESD-preventive wrist strap, and ESD-preventive clothes to avoid personnel injury or device damage. To prevent damage to the device, pay attention to the following during operations: Do not touch devices with bare hands because ESD from the human body may damage the electrostatically sensitive elements on a board. When dealing with the server or any of the internal components, wear an ESD-preventive wrist strap, ESD-preventive gloves, and ESD-preventive suit. 1

2 Hardware Part Replacement Procedure Removing and replacing faulty Primary Storage Shelf and Expansion Storage Shelf disk drives This section describes how to remove and replace faulty storage disk drives in a Primary Storage Shelf or Expansion Storage Shelf. Requirements ESD wrist strap HSP 137 Replacing a disk drive in a Primary Storage Shelf or an Expansion Storage Shelf 3-TB or 6-TB hot-swappable disk drive for the storage shelves Caution: Each storage shelf must have disk drives of the same capacity. You cannot mix 3TB and 6TB disk drives within one shelf. The size of the disk drive is printed on the label. See the following image for the location: Caution: You must complete a drive swap within three minutes. Leaving the drive slot open for longer than three minutes can result in the appliance overheating and cause other components to fail. Caution: Swap one drive at a time only. Removing more than one drive at one time can affect system functionality. 2

3 Note: Disk drives are hot-swappable. The storage shelf does not need to be powered down when replacing a disk drive. HSP 137 Replacing a disk drive in a Primary Storage Shelf or an Expansion Storage Shelf To locate and identify the storage shelf that has the faulty disk drive 1 Remove the bezel of the storage unit. 2 Verify that the unit contains a failed disk drive by checking the Drive Drawer Service Action Required LED on the front of the drawer. If a fault is detected, the amber Drive Drawer Service Action Required LED is on. Note: If the Drive Drawer Status Service Action Allowed LED is not lit, use the Support > ServiceAllowed command to set the storage shelf to Service Action Allowed mode. Contact Veritas Technical Support if you cannot lit the Service Action Allowed LED. Do not proceed with the replacement until the drawer is in the Service Action Allowed mode. 4 Use the slot map to verify that the failed drive is identified in the work order. If you can safely remove the disk drive, the blue Drive Drawer Status Service Action Allowed LED is on, and the Drive Activity LED is blue. 4

5 HSP 137 Replacing a disk drive in a Primary Storage Shelf or an Expansion Storage Shelf 5 Locate the drawer the faulty drive is in and pull both orange release levers into the center. The release levers are located at both ends of the drawer on the bottom. 6 Pull the drawer out to the full extension. To remove a storage-shelf disk drive 1 Put on an ESD-compliant wrist strap or take other ESD-protective measures. To review electrostatic safety precautions, see the topic titled Electrical Safety found earlier in this document. 2 Each drive has two LEDs that indicate Status and Service Action Allowed. The failed drive is indicated by a yellow status LED and a blue Service Action Allowed LED. 5

6 HSP 137 Replacing a disk drive in a Primary Storage Shelf or an Expansion Storage Shelf 3 On the front of the disk drive, locate and release the orange tab that holds the handle of the drive carrier in place. 4 Raise the handle to the full vertical position to release the disk drive from the connector in the drive slot. 6

7 HSP 137 Replacing a disk drive in a Primary Storage Shelf or an Expansion Storage Shelf 5 Use the handle to lift the drive out of the drive slot. 6 Place the disk drive in an ESD-compliant wrapper. 7 If you remove multiple drives, label each drive with the storage shelf number, the drive drawer number, and the slot number. To install the storage-shelf disk drive 1 Remove the replacement drive from the ESD-protective bag. 2 Raise the drive handle on the new drive to the vertical position. 3 Align the two raised buttons on each side of the drive over the matching gap in the channel on the drive drawer. 4 Lower the drive straight down then rotate the drive handle down until the drive snaps into place under the drive release lever. 7

8 HSP 137 Replacing a disk drive in a Primary Storage Shelf or an Expansion Storage Shelf 5 Push the drive drawer all the way back into the storage shelf and close the levers on each side of the drive drawer. 6 The Drive Drawer Status Service Action Required LED and the Drive Drawer Status Service Action Allowed LEDs turn off. 7 The Drive Activity LED for the replaced drive will start to blink as copy back starts. 8 Install the bezel on the front of the storage shelf. 8

9 HSP 137 Replacing a disk drive in a Primary Storage Shelf or an Expansion Storage Shelf Note: It may take several hours for the front panel Service Action Required LED to turn off. The rebuild or copy back process can take up to a day without backups, and up to two days while running backups. 9
