1 HPE StoreOnce Optional Hardware Installation and Configuration Guide Abstract This document is for StoreOnce System administrators responsible for installing and licensing StoreOnce Optional Hardware. Optional Hardware Kits are available for PCIe cards and for memory expansion DIMM modules. The PCIe card hardware kits contain a license entitlement certificate and 10 GbE Network or Fibre Channel PCIe cards for installation in supported StoreOnce Systems. The Memory Expansion Kits contain memory DIMM modules and a license entitlement certificate. Optional Hardware kits were introduced with StoreOnce software version 3.14.x and are not supported on all StoreOnce Systems. Part Number: P Published: March 2018 Edition: 5

5 StoreOnce Optional Hardware Kits The StoreOnce Optional Hardware Installation and Configuration Guide describes the installation requirements and procedures for the following StoreOnce optional hardware kits: StoreOnce Optional Hardware 10 GbE Network kit StoreOnce Optional Hardware Fibre Channel kit StoreOnce Optional Hardware Memory Expansion Kit IMPORTANT: This document is the only guide that describes the full installation procedure for StoreOnce Optional Hardware. Be sure to read it carefully before installing the optional hardware. Optional Hardware Kit contents Fibre Channel kit The StoreOnce Optional Hardware Fibre Channel kit consists of: An 8 Gb or 16 Gb FC PCIe card with two ports. Two Short Wave FC SFP+ transceivers appropriate for the supplied card (Part Number: AJ718A for the 8 Gb card, QW923A for the 16 Gb card). A license entitlement certificate. A Start Here flyer. 10 GbE Network kit The StoreOnce Optional Hardware 10 GbE Network kit consists of: A 10 GbE-T or 10 GbE SFP PCIe card with two ports. The SFP model has two optical 10 Gb SR SFP+ transceivers, appropriate for the supplied card (Part Number: ). A license entitlement certificate. A Start Here flyer. Memory Expansion kit The StoreOnce Optional Hardware Memory Expansion kit consists of: Memory DIMM modules A license entitlement certificate Installation scenarios There are two installation scenarios for the Optional Hardware kits. StoreOnce Optional Hardware Kits 5

6 Optional Hardware kits ordered with the initial installation: PCIe card kits: The PCIe card will already be installed. SFP+ transceivers will not be installed; they will be in the StoreOnce System Accessory box. The license will already be installed and the Optional Hardware is activated. Memory expansion kits: The Memory DIMM modules will already be installed. The license will already be installed. Optional Hardware kits ordered after the initial installation: PCIe card kits: Unpack the Optional Hardware Kit and check the contents. To install the PCIe card in the correct slot and plug in the SFP+ transceivers, follow the instructions in this guide. To redeem the License To Use and to log on to the StoreOnce GUI or CLI to apply it, follow the instructions on the License Entitlement certificate. Once the license is applied, use the StoreOnce GUI or CLI to activate the Optional Hardware. Memory expansion kits: Unpack the Optional Hardware Kit and check the contents. To install the Memory DIMM modules in the correct slots, follow the instructions in this guide. To redeem the License To Use, follow the instructions on the License Entitlement certificate. 7 Rules for PCIe slot allocation PCIe slot configuration options for HPE StoreOnce Systems StoreOnce software version and later supports the addition of 10 GbE Network and/or Fibre Channel PCIe cards to the basic configuration for the following StoreOnce products released after December If a StoreOnce product is not in the list, it does not support Optional Hardware. PCIe slot allocation If you have ordered additional PCIe cards with the base product, the StoreOnce System will have the correct cards installed in the correct PCIe slots and they will be licensed and activated when the product is supplied. When added to the base product after initial installation, Optional Hardware PCIe cards must be installed in the correct sequence to ensure that the hardware monitoring tools can report the status of each card. Rules for PCIe slot allocation 7

8 StoreOnce 6600 Systems allocation rules The StoreOnce 6600 System is a multinode system, each couplet has two server nodes, and there are up to four couplets in a fully expanded system. Optional hardware cards must be installed in pairs (to maintain high availability configurations). The PCIe cards may only be installed in slots 5 and 6. (The base configuration for StoreOnce 6600 Systems already has two 10 GbE SFP network cards in PCIe slots 1 and 4.) The Optional Hardware options are either two 10 GbE Network or two Fibre Channel cards. All nodes in the cluster must have the same type and model of card installed. Optical SFP+ transceivers are supplied with the FC cards and the 10 GbE SFP cards and must be installed. StoreOnce 6500 cluster expansion rules StoreOnce software version and later supports the addition of a StoreOnce 6600 couplet to an existing StoreOnce 6500 cluster. In this scenario, there are additional considerations, as follows: The StoreOnce 6500 system does not support the addition of StoreOnce Optional hardware. Each node in the cluster already has two 10 GbE SFP cards and two 8 Gb FC cards installed. The basic configuration for a StoreOnce 6600 couplet has two 10 GbE cards in each node, but no FC cards. When adding a StoreOnce 6600 couplet to a StoreOnce 6500 cluster, the basic configuration for the StoreOnce 6600 couplet is incomplete. It is necessary to purchase 8 Gb FC Optional Hardware for each node in the couplet (a total of four 8 Gb FC cards). If an Optional Hardware type or model other than 8 Gb FC is installed on the StoreOnce 6600 couplet, the hardware monitoring tools report it as unauthorized. If you do not purchase and install the correct 8 Gb FC cards, you will not be unable to use any Fibre Channel data path features on that couplet. Access to the StoreOnce CLI and GUI for management tasks and data path access via Ethernet will still be possible. This information is provided to help the customer make the correct ordering decisions at the point of purchase. Installation of an additional couplet is an HPE Support activity. The HPE Support engineer will check that the additional couplet has been delivered with the correct cards installed and activated to match the configuration of the StoreOnce 6500 cluster. StoreOnce 5500 Systems, StoreOnce 5100 Systems and StoreOnce 3500 Series allocation rules The PCIe cards must be installed in the correct slot sequence. 8 StoreOnce 6600 Systems allocation rules

9 For connection to Ethernet, the 10 GbE network cards must be installed, starting with slot 1, in the slot sequence 1, 4, 5, 6. For connection to SAN, the FC cards must be installed, starting with slot 6, in the slot sequence 6, 5, 4, 1. Optical SFP+ transceivers are supplied with the FC cards and the 10 GbE SFP cards. No additional hardware is required for the 10 GbE Base-T cards. NOTE: The StoreOnce 3100 System does not support the addition of PCIe cards. Example PCIe configurations The example configurations in this section apply to all single-node systems, namely StoreOnce 5500 Systems, StoreOnce 5100 Systems and StoreOnce 3500 Series. The illustrations show a StoreOnce 5100 System. For StoreOnce 6600 Systems, only PCIe slots 5 and 6 are available for Optional Hardware. There are no restrictions on mixing 10 GbE-T and 10 GbE SFP cards nor on the order in which they are installed. But they must be installed in sequence starting with PCI slot 1. Port numbering on Fibre Channel cards The following example shows two Fibre Channel cards installed in an StoreOnce 5100 Backup. The cards must be installed in sequence starting with PCI slot 6. 11 IMPORTANT: On StoreOnce 6600 Systems, Optional Hardware cards must be installed in slots 5 and 6. Other configurations Other installation combinations are supported on all systems apart from the StoreOnce 6600 System, but not illustrated. For example: Four 10GbE cards or four FC cards Three 10GbE plus one FC card Three FC plus one 10GbE card) IMPORTANT: The StoreOnce 6600 System supports matched pairs of cards only. All nodes in the cluster must have the same type and model of card installed. Other configurations 11

12 Installing PCIe cards Required tools You need a T-10 or T-15 Torx screwdriver for some procedures: Installation procedures overview PCIe card installation prerequisites Procedure 1. Prepare for maintenance/installation activity. Schedule Optional Hardware expansion as a maintenance activity in a quiet period. Make sure that host users are aware of the expansion process and check to see how any scheduled jobs, such as replication or StoreOnce Catalyst Copy, may be affected. 2. It is best practice to save the system configuration before carrying out maintenance activities. If you also have the Security Pack license installed and have applied encryption to any VTL libraries, NAS shares or Catalyst stores, verify that the latest keystore has been saved. See the StoreOnce CLI Reference Guide for more details about saving the configuration and keystore files. 3. If using HPE StoreOnce Remote Support, you may wish to disable remote event reporting to HPE, see Maintenance tasks with Remote Support via STaTS. PCIe card installation process overview To access components and install PCIe cards, you must: Procedure 1. Power down the server or node. 2. For StoreOnce 6600 Systems, see Power down the StoreOnce 6600 System node on page For all other StoreOnce systems, see Power down the StoreOnce System, single node systems on page Disconnect cables. Extend the server from the rack and move it into a position where it can be worked upon, see Remove cables, extend the server from the rack, and remove access panel on page Remove the PCIe riser cage and install the PCIe board, see Remove PCIe riser cage and install PCIe card on page Complete the PCI card installation, as described in Complete the PCIe card installation on page Install the SFP+ transceivers, if necessary, see Install SFP transceivers, if necessary, and connect to the network or SAN on page Installing PCIe cards

13 Safety considerations Preventing electrostatic discharge To prevent damaging the system, be aware of the recommended precautions when setting up the system or handling parts. A discharge of static electricity from a finger or other conductor may damage system boards or other static-sensitive devices. This type of damage may reduce the life expectancy of the device. To prevent electrostatic damage: Avoid hand contact by storing and transporting devices in anti-static containers. Keep electrostatic-sensitive parts in their containers until they arrive at the static-safe workstation Place parts on a grounded surface before removing them from their containers. Avoid touching points, leads, or circuitry Always be properly grounded when touching a static-sensitive component or assembly. Server warnings and cautions Before installing a server, be sure that you understand the following warnings and cautions. WARNING: To reduce the risk of electric shock or damage to the equipment: Do not disable the power cord grounding plug. The grounding plug is an important safety feature. Plug the power cord into a grounded (earthed) electrical outlet that is easily accessible at all times. When disconnecting power to the equipment, leave servers plugged in but switched off, where possible, to retain earthing. Do not route the power cord where it can be walked on or pinched by items placed against it. Pay particular attention to the plug, electrical outlet, and the point where the cord extends from the server. WARNING: To reduce the risk of personal injury from hot surfaces, allow the drives and the internal system components to cool before touching them. CAUTION: Do not operate the server for long periods with the access panel open or removed. Operating the server in this manner results in improper airflow and improper cooling that can lead to thermal damage. HPE StoreOnce Remote Support HPE StoreOnce Remote Support uses STaTS to send remote event notifications from the StoreOnce System to HPE Support. If you have configured HPE StoreOnce Remote Support for use on your system, Safety considerations 13

14 run the following StoreOnce CLI command before commencing the maintenance activity to suppress remote event reporting. system enable remoteeventsuppression "XYZ Maintenance" This prevents a support case being generated during the maintenance task. To return to normal mode after maintenance, run the StoreOnce CLI command: system disable remoteeventsuppression "XYZ Maintenance" Power down the StoreOnce 6600 System node The information in this section applies only to the StoreOnce 6600 System. Procedure 1. Schedule Optional Hardware installation as a maintenance activity in a quiet period. Make sure that host users know that the StoreOnce System will be unavailable and check to see how any scheduled jobs, such as replication, Catalyst Copy, and backup, may be affected. 2. Log on as Administrator to the StoreOnce CLI. Each node must be powered down. Use the following StoreOnce CLI command to power off the node, where X is the number of the node to be powered off. hardware poweroff nodex 3. Install the optional hardware cards in the powered off node. 4. Use the following StoreOnce CLI command to power the node back on: hardware poweron nodex 5. Repeat steps 2 4 for all nodes in the cluster. It is important to install all the optional hardware cards in each node cluster before attempting to activate. Power down the StoreOnce System, single node systems The information in this section applies to the StoreOnce 5500 System, StoreOnce 5100 System, and StoreOnce 3500 Series. Procedure 1. Schedule Optional Hardware installation as a maintenance activity in a quiet period. Make sure that host users know that the StoreOnce System will be unavailable and check to see how any scheduled jobs, such as replication, Catalyst Copy, and backup, may be affected. 2. Log on as Administrator to the StoreOnce GUI or the StoreOnce CLI and use the appropriate method to shut down the StoreOnce System cleanly. a. StoreOnce GUI: Click on Device Configuration in the Navigator and select Maintenance. Select Shutdown. b. StoreOnce CLI: Use the StoreOnce CLI Command system shutdown. NOTE: The front panel Power On/Standby button does not shut off system power. Portions of the power supply and some internal circuitry remain active. 3. Install the optional hardware cards in the powered off server. 14 Power down the StoreOnce 6600 System node

15 4. StoreOnce 5500 System: Power on all installed disk enclosures first. You may need to hold down the power-on button on the rear of each unit for up to 30 seconds. Look at the LEDs on the IO modules and wait until the Green Status LED remains on. See the Installation and Configuration Guide for your product for more details. 5. Use the Power On button to power on the StoreOnce System, as appropriate. Remove cables, extend the server from the rack, and remove access panel WARNING: To reduce the risk of personal injury or equipment damage, be sure that the rack is adequately stabilized before extending a component from the rack. To remove the server after shutting down the StoreOnce System Procedure 1. Disconnect the power cabling. 2. StoreOnce 5100 Systems may have Capacity Upgrade Kits attached. StoreOnce 6600 Systems and StoreOnce 5500 Systems will have disk enclosures attached. Disconnect the SAS cable between the head server and the first storage enclosure before extending the server from the rack. 3. Extend the server from the rack a. Pull down the quick release levers on each side of the server. b. Extend the server from the rack and move into a position where it can be worked upon. For more information, refer to the documentation that ships with the rack mounting option. 4. Open or unlock the locking latch on the server rear panel, slide the access panel to the rear of the chassis, and remove the access panel. Remove cables, extend the server from the rack, and remove access panel 15

16 Remove PCIe riser cage and install PCIe card IMPORTANT: When working with the primary PCIe riser card, do not disturb the SAS expander and RAID controller cards that are already installed in slots 2 and 3. Procedure 1. StoreOnce 6600 System: You will install the cards in slots 5 and 6. Remove the secondary PCIe riser cage. 2. StoreOnce 5500 System, StoreOnce 5100 System, and StoreOnce 3500 Series: If you are installing a card in slot 1, remove the primary PCIe riser cage. If you are installing a card in slots 4, 5 and/or 6, remove the secondary PCIe riser cage. When installing a card in slot 1, PCIe slots 2 and 3 are already populated with SAS cards. Take care not to dislodge them. 3. The following example illustrates the removal process. There may already be cards installed. 4. Remove the blanking plate for the appropriate slot. 5. The following example illustrates a StoreOnce 5100 System, where the first 10 GbE card is being installed in slot 1. The SAS expander card and RAID controller card occupy slots 2 and Remove PCIe riser cage and install PCIe card

17 NOTE: For StoreOnce 6600 Systems, remove blanking plates from PCIe slots 5 and Install the PCIe card. IMPORTANT: When working with the primary PCIe riser cage of StoreOnce 5500 System, StoreOnce 5100 System and StoreOnce 3500 Series, take care not to dislodge the two SAS cards in slots 2 and 3. NOTE: For StoreOnce 6600 Systems, install the cards in PCIe slots 5 and 6. Complete the PCIe card installation To complete the Optional Hardware installation. Procedure 1. Replace the PCIe riser cage. 2. Replace the access panel. a. Place the access panel on top of the server with the hood latch open. Allow the panel to extend past the rear of the server approximately 1.25 cm (0.5 in). b. Push down on the hood latch. The access panel slides to a closed position. c. Tighten the security screw on the hood latch. 3. Slide the server back into the rack and secure it. WARNING: To reduce the risk of personal injury, be careful when pressing the server rail-release latches and sliding the server into the rack. The sliding rails could pinch your fingers. 4. Connect power cables. Complete the PCIe card installation 17

18 5. With StoreOnce 5100 Systems make sure that the internal cabling for the two SAS cards is reconnected, as shown on the server hood label. For systems that have Capacity Upgrade Kits configured, reconnect the SAS cable from the server to the first Capacity Upgrade Kit. 6. With StoreOnce 6600 Systems and StoreOnce 5500 Systems, reconnect the SAS cables from the server or node to one or more disk enclosures. Install SFP transceivers, if necessary, and connect to the network or SAN Procedure 1. Install SFP transceivers as follows: a. 10GbE SFP Network card: use the supplied optical 10 Gb SR SFP+ transceivers (Part Number: ) 2 1 NOTE: The 10GbE-T Network card does not require SFP+ transceivers. b. Fibre Channel card: use the supplied 8 Gb SFP+ transceivers (Part Number: AJ718A) or the supplied 16 Gb SFP+ transceivers (Part Number: QW923A), as appropriate. 18 Install SFP transceivers, if necessary, and connect to the network or SAN

19 Connect the server to the 10GbE network and/or Fibre Channel SAN, as appropriate. Cables are not supplied. Cat6 or Cat7 cables are recommended for the Ethernet connection. 3. Use the Power On button to power on the server. 4. To view the status of Optional Hardware and license it for use, use the StoreOnce CLI or GUI as described in the next chapter, Installing PCIe cards 19

20 Install memory modules Identify the correct module layout for your system, shown in Memory module layouts. Install the memory modules into the correct slots in your system: Installing DIMMs in the StoreOnce 3100 Installing DIMMs in the StoreOnce 35x0 Installing DIMMs in the StoreOnce 5100 Installing DIMMs in the StoreOnce 5500 Installing DIMMs in the StoreOnce 6600 Redeem the license and apply it to the system: Complete new hardware installation using the StoreOnce GUI Installation using the StoreOnce CLI Memory module layouts DL 360 and DL 380 DIMM layout DIMM slots are numbered sequentially (1 through 12) for each processor. The supported AMP modes use the letter assignments for population guidelines. You do not need to follow the instructions in this chapter. When installing Optional Hardware after initial delivery, use the StoreOnce Management Console to apply licenses and validate Optional Hardware. The examples in this chapter use the StoreOnce GUI. Overview Use the StoreOnce Management Console to apply licenses and validate Optional Hardware. The examples in this chapter use the StoreOnce GUI. NOTE: If Optional Hardware has been installed before delivery, it will already be licensed. You do not need to follow the instructions in this chapter. Redeeming the Optional Hardware license The Optional Hardware Kit includes a license entitlement certificate, which is a paper document that contains all the information required to obtain your unique LTU (License to Use) key. NOTE: Redeem licenses individually so that you obtain a license key for each 10 GbE or FC controller card. Procedure 1. Log on to the StoreOnce GUI and select Device Configuration from the Navigator. 2. Select License Management and make a note of the Node Lock Serial Number. 3. Go to the HPE Licensing website, as instructed on the License Entitlement Certificate. 4. Log in using your HP Passport user ID and password. 5. Obtain the unique LTU key as instructed on the License Entitlement Certificate. You may use Cut and Paste to copy it to a temporary file or save it to a.dat file. If you save the LTU as a.dat file, use sftp to transfer it into the StoreOnce System's licenses directory, as described in the StoreOnce System User Guide. 6. 26 Applying the license NOTE: For users who prefer to use the StoreOnce CLI, all licenses can be loaded with the single StoreOnce CLI command license load. This command will load all licenses found in the licenses directory. See the StoreOnce CLI Reference Guide for more information. Procedure 1. Click Device Configuration and select License Management. 2. To see what licenses have already been applied, if any, look at the Fibre Channel Controller and Network Controller sections. The following example is from a StoreOnce 5100 System with one 8 GB Fibre Channel card and one 10 GbE-T Network card. 3. Click the Add License button at the top of the page. 4. Select the Input Type depending upon how you saved the license string. In our example, we saved it as a Key String and can now cut and paste it into the License Key field. (Verify that the string contains only license keys and no descriptor text.) 26 Applying the license

27 NOTE: If you saved the key string to a DAT file and have transferred it into the StoreOnce 5100 System licenses directory, you can use the Load License File option. See the StoreOnce System User Guide for more details. 5. Click OK. The Controller is now included in the appropriate License list. 6. Repeat to add all licenses. In the following example, one 16 Gb Fibre Channel and one 10 GbE SFP Network cards have been licensed. 7. The newly licensed controllers are ready for activation. 28 Prerequisites for StoreOnce 6600 Systems When expanding an existing cluster, HPE Support engineers will ensure that Optional Hardware in the new couplet matches the existing configuration and will activate the licenses for the new nodes before the new nodes join the cluster. For example, they will verify that: Procedure 1. A single-couplet StoreOnce 6600 System with two nodes has four licenses; two for each server. 2. A fully expanded StoreOnce 6600 System with eight nodes has the required 16 licenses. Activating Optional Hardware IMPORTANT: Load all the optional hardware licenses before attempting to activate. There will be one license for each card. Procedure 1. Click Device Configuration and select Optional Hardware. 2. Either put back the original card or contact Hewlett Packard Enterprise Support who will delete the original license and apply the new one. Hardware reported as degraded message Symptom The short message is Degraded and the error message is: Hardware reported as degraded. Cause The hardware is reported as degraded. Action Contact Hewlett Packard Enterprise Support Hardware missing message Symptom The short message is Missing and the error message is: Hardware missing. Cause A card that had been previously installed and activated has either failed completely and cannot be detected or has been physically removed without removing the license. Action Verify that the card has been installed as described in Installing PCIe cards on page 12. Card installed in the wrong PCI-E slot message Symptom The short message is Incorrect and the error message is: Card installed in the wrong PCI-E slot. Solution 1 Cause This message usually means that a card has been installed in the wrong slot. 36 Hardware reported as degraded message

37 Action Put the card in the correct slot and try to activate again. Solution 2 Cause A card failure in a lower-order slot also causes this message. For example, if the NIC in slot 1 fails and you are adding a NIC to slot 4, then slot 1 would display MISSING or FAILED and slot 4 would display Card installed in the wrong PCI-E slot. Action Replace the failed card first, as described in the Maintenance and Service Guide for the product. Hardware mismatch message Symptom The short message is Incorrect and the error message is: Hardware mismatch. Cause This message is for StoreOnce 6600 only and means that a node or a couplet does not have the same hardware as the rest of the cluster. Cards have not been added in pairs of the same type and model. Or nodes in the cluster have a different type or model of card to the other nodes. Action Verify that all nodes in the cluster have the same type and model of card in PCIe slots 5 and 6.
