4 SYSTEM= TARGET= 128 o F 130 o F MENU/SET SYSTEM= TARGET= 128 o F 130 o F MENU/SET Overview The (Electronic Tempering Valve) is a hot water temperature control. It operates one or two electronic motorized mixing valves to regulate the water temperature. It modulates the electronic motorized valves using a variety of voltages or a modulation signal. Its modulation PID is designed to respond quickly in temperature control of domestic hot water applications. The consist of four primary components, the control; the motorized electronic actuator; the 3-way mixing valve; and an immersion temperature sensor. Heat-Timer offers two valve materials, bronze or stainless-steel. Depending on the valve material and valve size selected, the actuator used may vary. See literature for additional information. For added safety, the control can be used with the TMC control (Temperature Monitoring Control). The TMC, using a solenoid valve, shuts the hot water supply to the electronic motorized valve if the hot water temperature became excessively hot. See TMC documentations for additional information. Operating Concept The control modulates the electronic motorized mixing valve to maintain a temperature set point. It does that by mixing two different water temperatures from two different sources; a hot water source and a cold-water source. The hot water source can be a hot water boiler, a hot water coil in a steam boiler, or a hot water storage tank. On the other hand, the cold water comes from the city water system. The cold water inlet is joined with the circulating loop return pipe to help maintain flow in the valve during no usage periods. The operation requires the use of a circulating loop pump to maintain a circulating loop temperature. The provides Setback features to help reduce the water temperature during low usage periods to save on energy. It has a Setback differential set point and a setback input. In addition, the can accept a remote temperature set point to help integrate into existing BMS systems. Design Considerations Circulating Loop The is designed to operate in a system that has a circulating return loop with a circulating pump. The circulating return loop temperature must be at least 7 F less than the set point temperature. This temperature differential prevents the mixed temperature from rising continuously. In addition, the temperature of the hot water entering the valve must be at least 20 F hotter than the set point temperature. Vertical Loop The cold water line to the hot water supply source MUST have a Thermal heat loop. The Thermal heat loop prevents the higher temperature water in the hot water supply source from backing up and entering the cold water inlet side of the mixing valve during low flow periods. The Thermal heat loop can be installed either up or down, but must be a minimum of 32 inches as measured from pipe-center to pipe-center. Control WARNING Do not use a check valve or a spring-loaded check valve on the Vertical Loop. Cold Water Actuator Circ. 5 Installation Steps Follow the these steps to make sure that all aspects of the system installation are done: 1. Pipe the valve. See Piping Diagrams on page Install the sensor well. 3. Mount the actuator to the valve. See actuator installation manual. 4. Mount the control. See Mounting the Enclosure on page Wire the control to the valve and sensor. See Voltage Actuator use External Transformer on page 6 and Voltage Actuator use for Power on page Calibrate the actuator. See actuator installation manual. 7. Set the set point. See on page 11. WARNING Failure to CALIBRATE the actuator motor before operation may damage the valve and actuator. Heat-Timer warranty does not cover these damages Control Installation Each control consists of four primary enclosure components. The Enclosure Display Module: contains the display, buttons, LEDs, and electric wiring terminals. It has two screws to hold it to the base. The wiring terminals are of the plug-in type to ease installation and removal. The Enclosure Base: contains the holes to mount and hold the control against the wall or any flat surface. All other enclosure components mount onto the base. The bottom section of the Enclosure Base contains the wiring chamber with bottom knockouts for all the inputs and outputs The Enclosure Wiring Cover: seals the wires from the external environment. It has two screws to hold it to the base. In addition, it has a hole that can be used with a padlock to secure the enclosure. The Enclosure Top Cover: seals the top of the Display Module. It is screwed to the Display Module from the inside. Enclosure Base Enclosure Top Cover Enclosure Display Module Enclosure Screws to Hold Wiring Wiring Cover Cover to base Hole for Optional Padlock Mounting the Enclosure Select a location near the equipment to be controlled. The surface should be flat, wide, and strong to hold the Control. Keep the control away from extreme heat, cold, or humidity. Remove the Enclosure Wiring Cover by removing the two screws holding it to the base. Remove the Enclosure Display Module with the Enclosure Top Cover by removing the 2 middle screws. Screw the Enclosure Base to the surface through the upper and lower mounting holes on the back of the enclosure. Replace the Enclosure Display Module and replace the middle screws. Do not replace the enclosure wiring covers until all wiring is done. When purchasing a padlock for the Bottom Enclosure Wiring Cover, the maximum shank diameter should not exceed ¼. 6 Wiring To avoid damage to the equipment, DO NOT replace or install wires when power is connected to the actuator or the control. Wiring the Power (Terminals 1, 2) Bring the 120 VAC power wires through the one of the bottom knockouts. Connect the hot line to output terminal 1 marked L. Connect the neutral line to output terminal 2 marked N. Heat-Timer recommends the installation of a Power Switch and a surge-suppressor before the Power Line connection for safety and ease of service. 120VAC L N PWR L N 1 2 WARNING Class 1 voltages wires (low voltage) must use a different knockout, conduit, and path from any Class 2 voltage wires (high voltage). to Actuator Voltage Wiring The control is designed to operate a variety of actuators. Depending on the actuator used and its settings, the can send a 0-10V modulation signal to the actuator. In addition, most actuators can use the 24 VAC power source supplied from the terminals (3) and (4). However, some actuators may require the use of an external power source (Transformer Kit HT# ). If the actuator requires and external power source, Heat-Timer packages the transformer with the actuator. See the specific actuator installation manual for additional instruction on wiring, calibration, and dip switch settings. Voltage Actuator use External Transformer 1st Actuator Voltage Signal Terminals (15) and (16) 2nd Actuator Voltage Signal Terminals (17) and (18) The Voltage signal for the first actuator uses Terminal (15) (Volt 1 +) on the control. Connect this terminal to the actuator terminal (X1). Terminal (16) (Volt 1 -) on the control connects to the 1st actuator terminal (MX). If an additional actuator is used, then connect terminal (17) (Volt 2 +) on the control to the 2nd actuator terminal (X1) and connect terminal (18)(Volt 2 -) on the control to the 2nd actuator terminal (MX). This type of actuator requires an external power source. Heat-Timer provides an external transformer with this actuator. Connect the transformer low voltage wires to the actuator terminals (G) and (GO). Do not share the same transformer with other equipment. Warning To avoid damage to the valve and actuator, the actuator MUST BE FULLY CALIBRATED before operation. Calibration must be done every time the actuator and the valve are reassembled. 12 Troubleshooting Fuse No Display or LED Lights Check the power to the. The requires 120 VAC power to terminal 1 and 2. Turn the power off and back on. If unsuccessful, make sure the fuse on the back of the Enclosure Display Module is working by checking it with a continuity meter. If no continuity exists, replace the fuse with a 20 mm 2.5 amp fuse. Reads OPEN or SHORT and Valve is Fully Closed The will close the valve when the System reads Short or Open. See Display Messages on page 9. If the System reads Open, short the sensor input terminals. The display should read Short. If it does, check the sensor wiring. If it doesn t, the may be damaged. If the System reads Short, remove the wires from the input terminals. The display should read Open. If it does, check the sensor wiring. If it doesn t, the may be damaged. Reads Incorrect Temperature Remove the wires from the input terminals. The display should change to read Open. If it doesn t, the may be damaged. Otherwise, take an ohm reading across the detached sensor wires. The ohm reading should correspond to the Temperature Chart. If the difference is within 5 F adjust the Trim of the sensor. Otherwise, the sensor may need to be replaced. No Hot Water Shutdown Shorted - If the displays Shutdown, check the Shutdown terminals. If the Shutdown terminals are shorted, the will close the valve. See Shutdown on page 8. If the was using an external set point, the signal may be below 2mA or above 22mA. See 4mA and 20mA on page 10. Does Not Move the Floating Motorized Valve First check the valve wiring - Make sure that the wiring to the actuator power terminals has between 20 to 24 VAC. If the voltage is higher or lower, the actuator may stop moving or get damaged. Valve Modulating Signal - Make sure that the Modulating Signal is set to 0-10V to match the actuator s signal. Press the button to read valve opening %. Your voltage signal meter reading must correspond to that s %. If the valve-opening % was at 40%, then the signal should read 4VDC. If it did not, the control is damaged. See Default Display on page 9. Temperature Chart TEMPERATURE Value F C (in Ohms) OPEN TEMPERATURE Value F C (in Ohms) SHORT 100 Outlet Temperature Fluctuates Check the Circulating Loop Piping - The requires the use of a circulating pump and a circulating loop. The loop temperature must be at least 7 F lower than the set point. If the loop is insulated, its temperature may not be much lower than the set point. This will cause outlet temperature oscillation. To reduce the oscillation, install an aquastat on the circulating loop to operate the circulating pump. Set the aquastat to at least 10 F below the set point. See Circulating Loop on page Installation and Operation Manual
