Install a 24 VDC shunt trip circuit on one of the feeder breakers, normally the generator feeder. Provide power for this trip circuit and alarm system backup from the engine starting batteries or an equivalent source. Closed-transition switches require a momentary (less than 100 ms) paralleling of the standby source with the utility. Obtain approval of the installation by the utility. A closed-transition switch helps prevent the momentary outages that occur during transfer with open-transition models. A closed-transition switch complements but does not replace a UPS system, as it does not provide stored energy capability. 4 Withstand and Closing Ratings (WCR) The transfer switch is rated for use on a circuit capable of delivering not more than the rms symmetrical amperes listed at the specified maximum voltage below, but no greater than the interrupting capacity of the selected circuit breaker or fuse.
