3 1 GENERAL DESCRIPTION The document relates to the cable-less linear encoder, LE 2 C. It provides the following: List of kit components Pointers to other documents that are needed to operate this encoder Electrical interface Mounting instructions 1.1 Mounting Kit Components The encoder is provided without cables. The mounting kit LE2C-INT includes the following components: AqBiSS to user cable, with loose wires Three read-head M2 mounting screws Two read-head 2mm alignment pins Can be ordered separately- AqBiSS to user cable, with 15-pin D-type connector To evaluate the linear encoder, order the evaluation kit, which includes all the required components. 1.2 Related Documentation For instructions on operating the encoders, Description, explanation and implementation of AqBiSS protocol please refer to our website - UG202_LE2C_01.doc Copyright 2004 Netzer Precision Motion Sensors Ltd. Type Mating Mating Pins Cable DF13-12P-1.25H DF13-12S-1.25S DF SCF 26-28AWG Connect the shield at both ends of the cable. On the encoder side, connect the ground cable terminal to the chassis body. The cable should be sufficiently flexible for your application. NOTE: If a long cable is used, then in order to avoid an excessive voltage drop on the 5V supply, it is recommended to: Use a cable with the maximum gage possible in order to minimize resistance. Use a separate power supply with a short cable. CAUTION! The cable from the encoder must have a strain relief to the body of the machine. Excessive pull on the cable might break the encoder. 5 3 MOUNTING INSTRUCTIONS This chapter specifies the mounting instructions for the LE 2 C scale and read-head. It describes four possible ways to mount the encoder to the machine. 3.1 Grounding Ensure the encoder is properly grounded while the encoder is working: Press the encoder against a grounded metal part of the machine, OR Connect a ground wire to one of the profile holes using a screw and a bolt. 3.2 Mounting the Scale The following drawing is an overview of the product dimensions. 6 3.2.1 Bottom Mounting with M3 Screws In this method, the encoder is mounted to the machine using two M3 screws located at the ends. The distance between the screws equals the profile s length minus 10mm. The screws should be at least 10mm long and closed with a helical spring lock washer. The surface on which the encoder is mounted should have a planarity of no more than 0.08mm over 1 meter and a surface quality of 7 or higher. The screws should not be used for the encoder alignment. Align the encoder with the head movement according to the tolerances specified in Section 3.3 before tightening the screws. UG202_LE2C_01.doc Page 6 of 11

7 3.2.2 Side Mounting with M3 Screws In this method, the encoder is mounted to the machine using four M3 screws located at the ends. The distance between the screws equals the profile length minus 10mm. The screws should be at least 10mm long and closed with a helical spring lock washer. The surface on which the encoder is mounted should have a planarity of no more than 0.08mm over 1 meter and a surface quality of 7 or higher. Align the encoder with the head movement according to the tolerances specified in Chapter 3.3 before tightening the screws. 3.2.3 Slot Mounting In this method, the encoder is mounted inside a slot and fastened to the slot side with screws at regular intervals along the length of the scale.

8 3.2.3 Slot Mounting In this method, the encoder is mounted inside a slot and fastened to the slot side with screws at regular intervals along the length of the scale. Tightening at several points along the whole length of the encoder ensures a good mounting accuracy. Ensure to align the slot with the direction of movement of the read-head. The screws should not be larger than M3. The surface of the slot: Should have a planarity of no more than 0.08mm over 1 meter length Should have a surface quality of 7 or higher Should be perpendicular to surface B, as shown in the drawing above UG202_LE2C_01.doc Page 8 of 11

9 3.2.4 Side Pressure Mounting In this method, the encoder is pressed along its length to the side of the machine using any method, as long as the pressure is applied to the lower 4mm of the profile as shown in the following drawing. This ensures a good mounting accuracy across the whole scale length. CAUTION! Do not apply pressure to the profile above 4mm from the bottom. Pressing above this point might permanently damage the encoder. The surface on which the encoder is mounted should have a planarity of no more than 0.08mm over 1 meter and a surface quality of 7 or higher. 10 3.3 Mounting the Read-Head The following drawing shows the mounting of the read-head. Y X Z The read-head nominal position is in the center of the profile at an equal distance from the two PCB scales inside the profile. The nominal height from the bottom of the scale is 1.15mm. The mounting tolerances are specified in the following table: Parameter Permissible head misalignment from the bottom in the Y axis Permissible head tilt between head edges in the Y axis Permissible head work envelope (tilt + misalignment) from the center in the X Z plane Tolerance ±0.5 mm ±0.1 mm ±0.1 mm While mounting the head, use two 2mm alignment pins for accurate mounting. Use three M2 screws to fasten the read-head. The mounting screw torque is Nm. Connect the interface cable to the encoder connector. Secure the cable with a strain relief. 11 CAUTION! When mounting the read-head ensure that the sine pattern on the read-head is facing the backside of the encoder (the side opposite the connector) and the rectangular pattern is facing the front (connector) side as shown in the pictures below.
