Introduction DrivePoint is a device that turns wheelchair joystick movements into mouse pointer movements. It may also be used with wheelchairs driven with headcontrol systems, scanners, Sip n Puff systems and other wheelchair interface systems. DrivePoint is compatible with any wheelchair controller that includes a Digital Output Port, often referred to as Environmental Control Unit (ECU) port or Communications port. The Digital Remote Transmitter connects to the Digital Output Port, and is powered directly by the wheelchair batteries. The DrivePoint RF Multiway Transmitter with wireless switch link allows its user to control the mouse cursor on any computer with a USB port and also control any switch-accessible device. The DrivePoint RF Multiway Transmitter has 5 different possible modes: Wired DrivePoint, Wireless DrivePoint 1, Wireless DrivePoint 2, Wireless Switch 1, and Wireless Switch 2. Some of these modes may not be enabled, depending on the particular needs of the user. If more than one mode is enabled, the DrivePoint RF Multiway Transmitter has a mode input that allows the user to switch between modes. This feature is very useful for users who want to control a communication device as well as a separate computer. By simply pressing a mode switch, the user can easily and independently gain mouse access to both the computer and the communication device. When using the Wired DrivePoint, the DrivePoint RF Multiway Transmitter connects directly to a computer using the built-in USB cable. When using the Wireless DrivePoint mode, the transmitter sends the mouse movement commands to a DrivePoint RF Receiver. The receiver is connected via USB to the computer. Lastly, when using the Wireless Switch mode, the transmitter sends the current state of the input switches to the Wireless Switch Link Receiver. The receiver will open or close its outputs based on the signal that is sent from the transmitter. Connection Instructions 1. Joystick Control Connection Locate the 9-pin input cable on the Digital Remote Transmitter and connect it to the matching 9-pin Digital Output Port. Ensure that the controller is configured to use the Digital Output Port. For best results, the port should be configured in Communications mode. See your wheelchair dealer for details on how to configure the wheelchair controller. DrivePoint RF Transmitter v2.0 User Manual 3 November 20, 2014

2. Power Connection If the DrivePoint RF Multiway Transmitter will be used in a wired mode, then the USB cable provides the power and an external power source is not needed. Otherwise, an external power connection is needed. One end of the power cable connects to the Digital Remote Transmitter. The other end will vary, depending on the make and model of your wheelchair electronics. The most common wheelchair configurations are described below. Invacare MK4 or MK5: The Digital Output Port connects to the wheelchair controller via a set of circular 5-pin connectors. Connect the one of the plugs on the power cable to one of these 5- pin connectors. The second 5-pin connector on the power cable remains available for future additions to the wheelchair. Invacare MK6: The Digital Output Port connects to the wheelchair controller via a rectangular 7-pin connector. These connectors are designed to be stacked together, allowing multiple connections. Connect the power cable to this 7-pin connector. Pride Q-Tronix: There are two possible connectors, depending on the cable provided: Circular connector: Locate the matching circular jack on the Digital Output Module. Plug the power cable into this jack. 6-pin rectangular connector: Follow the cable from the Digital Output Module to the wheelchair controller. The Digital Output Module will connect to a Multiplier before reaching the controller itself. This Multiplier should have several matching 6-pin rectangular jacks on it. Connect the power cable to one of these jacks. Pride / Quickie with Penny & Giles electronics: A cable connects the wheelchair display unit to other peripherals on the wheelchair. This cable has a circular 6-pin connector on both ends, which are identical to the connectors on the power cable. Disconnect the cable on the wheelchair, and connect the power cable in its place. 3. DrivePoint Receiver Connection Plug the DrivePoint RF Receiver into a USB port on the computer. If you do not have a receiver, ignore this step. 4. Wireless Switch Link Receiver Connection Plug the Wireless Switch Link Receiver into a USB port on the computer, or attach it to another 5V power source. Connect the 3.5mm mono plugs from the receiver to the switch-accessible device that you want to DrivePoint RF Transmitter v2.0 User Manual 4 November 20, 2014

control. If you do not have a wireless switch link receiver, ignore this step. 5. Mouse and DrivePoint Mode Inputs Connect switches to the jacks on the Digital Remote Transmitter as required. See Mouse and Mode Buttons on page 10 for further details. The picture below shows the setup for a user who wants to control 1 computer via USB, 2 computers wirelessly, and 2 switch accessible toys wirelessly. Figure 1: DrivePoint System Connections Once DrivePoint is connected, follow these steps each time you want to use it: 1. Turn on the computer. Wait for your operating system to be properly loaded. 2. Switch the wheelchair controller to the Digital Output Port. 3. You may now use DrivePoint to control the mouse! The first time you use DrivePoint, you may wish to adjust some of the user settings. See DrivePoint Options on page 6 for more information. 6 DrivePoint Options Option Switches A set of 7 DIP switches on the underside of DrivePoint can be used to change some options. They can easily be changed with a skinny object, such as a screwdriver or a pen. Figure 2: Option Switches The table on the next page outlines the effect of each DIP switch. 8 The features that can be adjusted through the DIP switches are further described in their respective sections. For more information on: Mouse speed, see Pointer Speeds on page 11 Acceleration feature, see Acceleration on page 12 Drag feature, see Dragging on page 10 Toggle, latching, and latching hold features, see Hints for Users with Special Requirements on page 12 Option Dials DrivePoint also contains four dials on the bottom of the transmitter. These dials may be used to customize some speed and timing settings. A small jeweller s screwdriver can be used to adjust the settings on the dials. Figure 3: Option Dials DrivePoint RF Transmitter v2.0 User Manual 8 November 20, 2014

Turning these dials clockwise will cause the corresponding feature to occur faster. Turning the dials counter-clockwise will cause the features to slow down. For further information on: The drag dial, see Dragging on page 10 The speed dials: see Pointer Speeds on page 11 Drag/hold toggle dial, see Hints for Users with Special Requirements on page 12 Wireless Receiver Address Switches DrivePoint can contain up to 2 DIP switches, each with 4 on/off switches, which allow the user to set the address of the wireless receiver. Figure 4: Wireless Receiver Address Switches DrivePoint RF Transmitter v2.0 User Manual 9 November 20, 2014

The first switch allows the user to set the address of the primary receivers (both for DrivePoint and for the wireless switch link). The second switch sets the address of any secondary receivers. To use the wireless transmission, set the two addresses to different values on the DrivePoint transmitter. On your primary receiver (or receivers, if you are using both DrivePoint and a wireless switch link), set the address to the same value as on the DrivePoint transmitter. Similarly, set the address on your secondary receiver(s) to the same value as on the DrivePoint transmitter. If the transmitter is being used with only 1 wireless receiver, the secondary address is ignored. If the transmitter is going to be used only over USB (not wirelessly), both of the addresses are ignored. Mouse and Mode Buttons The left and right mouse buttons act as on a conventional mouse. Clicking can be done simply by pressing and releasing the button quickly. Double-clicking can be performed similarly by pressing and releasing the button twice in succession. Some versions of DrivePoint come with left click, left double click, and right click inputs. These inputs cause a click-and-release, even if the switch is held down. This can be useful for users who have no need for click-and-dragging, but find that they drag by accident. Dragging For applications where either the left or right mouse button may need to remain depressed while the mouse is moved, DrivePoint has a Drag feature that may be activated. To turn on this feature, set DIP Switch 4 to the ON position. To turn it off, set switch 4 to the OFF position. If the user holds down the mouse button for a preset amount of time, DrivePoint will lock down the button signal to the computer even if the user releases the button. A red indicator light on the DrivePoint (see image below) will turn on to show that the Drag function has been initiated for that button. The user can then move the mouse as usual and the button will effectively be held down. To release the button, the user need only press the button again. DrivePoint RF Transmitter v2.0 User Manual 10 November 20, 2014

Figure 5: Drag Indicators on DrivePoint RF Receiver To adjust the length of time which the mouse buttons must be held down to activate the Drag feature, turn the Time for drag or latching hold dial clockwise to lengthen the activation time, or counter-clockwise to shorten it. If the Latching Hold feature is active (see Latching Hold on page 13), the dial also controls the timing for that feature. Pointer Speeds Regular Speed The maximum speed of the pointer can be adjusted to the user s needs. There are two ways of speeding up or slowing down the pointer: 1. Software: Your computer operating system may have a Mouse Control Panel in which the speed of the mouse pointer can be adjusted. This is the easiest way to set the pointer speed to a comfortable level. 2. Hardware: If the Control Panel setting is unavailable or ineffective, a second method of adjusting the speed can be used. Locate the Regular speed dial on the underside of DrivePoint. Turning the dial clockwise speeds up the cursor, turning the dial counter-clockwise slows it down. DrivePoint RF Transmitter v2.0 User Manual 11 November 20, 2014

Acceleration DrivePoint also comes with an Acceleration feature. This feature can be enabled by setting DIP Switch 3 to the ON position. Turning Switch 3 OFF disables it. There are two dials associated with the Acceleration feature. The first dial sets the slow speed. This is the speed at which the cursor initially moves. The second dial adjusts how long the slow speed will be active. With Acceleration activated, the mouse pointer will move slowly when a direction is first selected. Once the mouse has been moving for an amount of time that exceeds the amount specified by the dial, the mouse pointer will begin moving at regular speed. This regular speed is then maintained until the user stops moving the mouse cursor. This feature is particularly useful for users who want a high cursor speed to move the pointer across the screen, but lack the ability the target smaller menu items or icons on the screen at those speeds. Hints for Users with Special Requirements DIP switches 1, 2, 5 and 6 control several features which may be helpful to users with reduced switch sites or directional control. These features are described below. You may keep these special features disabled by ensuring that switches 1, 2, 5 and 6 are all in the OFF position. Up/Down Toggle Users of RIM-control, head-control, or other 3-switch systems normally only have access to 3 of the 4 directions: Up, Left and Right. Down is unavailable. A toggle feature was implemented to alleviate this problem. When switch 1 is set to the ON position and 2 is OFF, the Up/Down Toggle feature is activated. With this feature activated, the user controls both up and down cursor movements with the same joystick direction. If the user activates the mouse cursor to move upwards, the next time the cursor is moved it will move down, the following instance will find the cursor moving up again, and so on. When this mode is active, a left click is produced if the user pushes the joystick in the down direction. Left and right cursor movements are controlled by the left and right joystick directions, as usual. DrivePoint RF Transmitter v2.0 User Manual 12 November 20, 2014

Left/Right Toggle When switch 1 is set to the OFF position and 2 is ON, the Left/Right Toggle feature is activated. With this feature activated, the user controls both left and right cursor movements with the same joystick direction. If the user activates the mouse cursor to move left, the next time the cursor is moved it will move to the right, the following instance will find the cursor moving to the left again, and so on. When this mode is active, a left click is produced if the user pushes the joystick to the right. Up and down cursor movements are controlled by the up and down joystick directions, as usual. Two-Direction Toggle Some users may find that, for various reasons, they only have two joystick directions available to control mouse movements. In this case, the Two- Direction Toggle feature may be enabled by setting Switch 1 and Switch 2 to the ON position. When the user first pushes the joystick forward, the mouse cursor moves up. If the user releases the joystick and pushes forward again, the mouse cursor will now move down. The forward direction will continue to toggle between up and down whenever it is pushed and released. Similarly, when the user pushes and releases the joystick to the left, the mouse cursor will toggle between moving left and right. Left and Forward are the default directions that will work with the Two- Direction Toggle feature. Custom wiring may be requested if different directions are required. When this mode is active, a left click is produced if the user pushes the joystick right, and a right click is produced when the joystick is pushed down. Latching Some users may have difficulty keeping the wheelchair joystick activated to move the mouse cursor long distances across the screen. The Latching feature would be beneficial to these users. When switch 5 is in the OFF position and switch 6 is in the ON position, Latching is activated. When the user pushes the joystick in any direction, the mouse cursor will move in the specified direction even when the joystick is released. To stop the cursor, push the joystick again in the same direction. Latching Hold Users who wish to use the Up/Down, Left/Right, or Two-Direction Toggle feature in conjunction with the Latch feature have the additional option of the DrivePoint RF Transmitter v2.0 User Manual 13 November 20, 2014

Latching Hold feature. When switch 6 is ON, the Latching Hold feature is active. With this feature activated, the mouse cursor moves up when the joystick is pushed forward, and continues moving when the joystick is released. To stop the cursor, push the joystick forward again. If the user wishes to move down instead, he pushes the joystick forward and holds it until the cursor changes direction. Similarly, pushing the joystick to the left causes the cursor to move left, while holding down the joystick will move the cursor to the right instead. To adjust the length of time that the joystick must be held down before the cursor changes direction, turn the Time for drag or latching hold dial clockwise to lengthen the activation time, or counter-clockwise to shorten it. If the Drag feature is active (see Dragging on page 10), the dial also controls the timing for that feature. Sip n Puff Users (and others without mouse button access) Users of Sip n Puff systems generally are unable to access extra switches to use as mouse buttons. Some users of joysticks or scanners may also be unable to locate additional access sites. These users may wish to take advantage of functionality built into the Up/Down Toggle and Two-Direction Toggle features (described earlier in this section). The use of a toggle opens up an input to be used as a left mouse button. Users Requiring Help with Double-Clicking Double-clicking normally involves pressing and releasing the button quickly twice in succession. For a user unable to press and release the button quickly enough, an additional switch jack may be added to the DrivePoint RF Multiway Transmitter. A momentary switch may be connected to this jack, and the user can then perform a double-click simply by pressing this switch once. The double-click input is able to send double-click signals for the left mouse button only. DrivePoint RF Transmitter v2.0 User Manual 14 November 20, 2014
