Product History: Evolution to Carlson Civil 2007 Carlson Civil 2007 is a new product offering from Carlson Software addressing the site, subdivision, and road design needs of the civil engineer. Carlson Civil 2007 is new, but it is the outgrowth of a well-established product line dating back to It is the third makeover of core products from Carlson Software. The first product that established the company was Surveyor 1, a DOS-based survey solution that included plotting and digitizing, as well as a full set of COGO functions. With the advent of AutoCAD 10 in the early 1990s, Carlson Software ported all of its features to work inside AutoCAD, and supplemented the survey routines with contouring, volumes, subdivision design, sections, profiles and a complete set of roading features. This second incarnation was known as SurvCADD. SurvCADD became a favorite solution for surveying companies, was utilized by many civil departments, and with the addition of mining features, came to dominate many sectors of the mine design and planning industry. With the continued addition of civil engineering and construction-oriented features, SurvCADD began to outlive both its name and its survey-oriented structure. Since 2000, Carlson Software has emphasized development of a new set of advanced civil engineering features for 3D road network design and site development. These objects remember their display properties and can be setup to update automatically or by explicit command when the source data changes. By attaching extended entity data to standard AutoCAD entities, the Carlson Software 2007 product line creates these dynamic objects without introducing custom entities. Using standard AutoCAD entities allows regular drafting on the entities and keeps it simple for sharing drawings with other companies. 6 Carlson Civil 2007 Project Data Management & Exchange Flexible Project Setup: Carlson Civil 2007 project setup supports userdefined project subfolders along with control over default file locations by data type. Alternatively, project setup can be turned off. Then drawings can be simply opened and worked on with the data files stored in the drawing folder. Data Exchange: Carlson Civil 2007 provides full LandXML support for seamless exchange of design data to and from all civil applications. 7 Carlson Civil 2007 Points Carlson Civil 2007 provides robust point functionality, working with an external coordinate point data file. There is full support for Point Groups and a wide range of options for point display, overlap avoidance, twist screen and point conversions. Coordinate History All changes to the coordinate file record the command and status to make a coordinate history that can be reported by point number or by command. Commands like Drawing Inspector and Point Snap show the most recent history for each point. All changes can be rolled back. 8 Carlson Civil 2007 Surface Modeling Carlson Software's expertise in surface modeling has helped build it's reputation in the industry. Pad Template, Triangulate & Contour and Volumes by Layer have led the industry in simplicity and speed, along with powerful commands like 3D Polyline Offset, Extend and Trim working within AutoCAD. The 3D Polyline by Slope on Surface continues to elicit wonderment in product demonstrations, as does the awesome Edit-Assign Polyline Elevations command. We at Carlson Software do 3D, we do DTM. It is our forte, our comfort zone. You, too, will find your own comfort zone with Carlson Civil Because it does difficult, time-consuming procedures fast with virtually no learning curve, Carlson Civil 2007 offers an exceedingly quick return on investment. Right from the start, it makes money for you. Contouring: The Carlson method of contouring rejects the notion that you must make and edit a TIN prior to contouring. Why two steps? Instead, we contour in one step, with optional labeling and index contours. If you insist on editing TINS, you can do it that way, too. But we ve got a better way. Draw 3D Polyline breaklines first. (A great application of Field-to-Finish, by the way.) Then contour. If its good, you're done. If not, draw additional 3D Polylines in problem areas (eg. overlooked ditches and ridges). Delete the old contours by our delete layer command, then re-contour. One or two iterations, and you have the final map. No mysterious analysis of TINs, TIN-swapping, etc. Settings used for contouring can be saved as permanent defaults. 9 Carlson Civil 2007 Grading Carlson Civil 2007 includes a variety of tools to accomplish the task of site grading, including point commands, 3D polyline commands, contour commands and a grading mechanism known as a Pad Template, which dynamically projects slopes into an existing surface model. Pad Templates are also enhanced with an array of special abilities, such as the ability to assign a separate surface for the area inside the pad, which moves horizontally and vertically with edits to the pad, and the ability to use a design template for the side slopes so they can project complex grading designs. Once defined, Edit Pad Template then allows for repeated design iterations, automatically updating surfaces and volumes in real time. 10 Carlson Civil 2007 Volumes Carlson Civil 2007 provides a variety of quick and easy methods to calculate accurate volumes and detailed reports. We do volumes by grid surfaces, using one surface or two surfaces. We do volumes by layer, instantly building two grids from existing drawing geometry simply by specifying which layers contain existing conditions and which are proposed. We do volumes by TIN files, and volumes by sections. We even have special volume commands to calculate stock piles and ponds or pits. For even more detailed volume calculations, you can specify earthwork zones and materials, and add multiple inclusion and exclusion boundaries. In addition to detailed reports, you can produce cut/fill labels, color maps and centroids in the drawing file to clearly illustrate the earthwork story. 11 Carlson Civil 2007 Profiles Carlson Civil 2007 includes the ability to generate profiles of existing conditions from a wide range of options, an intuitive interface to add design profiles, and a full and complete set of controls to produce the actual profiles in your drawings. Whether working from drawing contours, external surface files, or a string of surveyed points, generating an existing conditions profile is quick and simple. You can even start with any polyline, view the quick profile, watch it respond in real time as the polyline is edited or moved, and then draw the profile on the screen. Adding proposed finish grade profiles is simple, intuitive and dynamic, providing real-time design capabilities such as adding PVI s with a mouse pick, and moving them with a mouse click and drag. You can even view the corresponding cross sections as you design the profile. Feedback is provided to the designer in real time as well. As the cursor moves, the program displays station, elevation, vertical difference and slope. This is particularly helpful when designing roads with slope constraints such as maximum 10% grade. Once a vertical PI point is selected, the user can snap to even stations or grades, and set the vertical curve length based on sight distance considerations or direct entry. 12 Carlson Civil 2007 Sections Sections are similar to profiles in the variety of ways that they can be extracted from contour maps, rows of section points, or grid and TIN files. Sections can be imported from a variety of ASCII section formats, including those of other software packages and certain standard DOT (Department of Transportation) formats. Sections can even be digitized directly from paper plans using a simple alignment process. But if you need to enter your sections from field notes or as offsets and elevations, this entry dialog greatly assists the process. As shown in the Edit Station window, you can even present two sections graphically and enter tie slopes or ratios to connect final grade to existing grade dynamically. Entry and editing is a simple typing exercise, with the Enter key taking you forward to the next entry. You can toggle between Offset and Elevation, Offset and Ratio or Offset and Percent Slope. Section point descriptions are used for many purposes, including: Presentation in reports. Template IDs become descriptions and report out as well. Pipe descriptions are detected and lead to crossing pipe displays in profile and section plots. Right-of-way descriptions are detected and lead to right-of-way annotation on cross section plots. Office entries such as 4:1, 2 bottom ditch become field references when recalled within SurvCE during slope staking. 10

13 Carlson Civil 2007 Template Design Template design has always been a challenge. That s why we have designed our template software by incorporating everything we have learned working with DOTs and highway design firms, residential and commercial developers and designers, contractors, and even many professionals from the mining industry. Templates are complex, and need a wide range of flexibility in their design. Carlson Civil 2007 templates allow for an unlimited number of grade breaks, an unlimited number of parallel and non-parallel subgrades, distinct subgrade zones for precise volumetric calculations, template break points with unique IDs (names leading to dynamic responses to lane width or superelevation conditions) and subgrades and outslopes that can catch existing ground by flexible methods. We also do a variety of curbs and gutters, berms, multiple benches in cut, special ditch profiles whatever features are needed, the interface is there to add it easily and intuitively. In Carlson Civil 2007, templates are designed graphically using simple icon selections. Pick the element to add, fill in the critical design parameters, and immediately see the changed template. Once designed, the Draw Template command creates a drawn version in your drawing, fully dimensioned and annotated. So whether for simple subdivision streets or complex urban and rural 2-lane and 4-lane highways, or even levees and irrigation ditches, Carlson Civil 2007 templates are easy to design and use, and powerful enough to handle your most demanding road design or highway stakeout project. 14 Carlson Civil 2007 Road Networks The Carlson Civil 2007 Road Network introduces a dramatically new and elegant method for laying out a collection of intersecting roads, and processing them all together, cleaning up all intersections and cul-de-sacs in 2D and 3D with a single pick of the Process button. While even that much is impressive, the magic really begins with edits to the design, horizontal or vertical. Change the vertical alignment of a road, all other roads in the network that are impacted by the change are automatically updated, as are the corresponding profiles, cross sections, and volume calcs. Add a road, no problem. Add a cul-de-sac, simple. Move a road, just pick Process. You will be amazed at how easy and user-friendly it is, and how quickly you will be using it. Process One Road Network file stores all of the connections to all design information, including centerlines, profiles, templates, widenings, intersections and cul-de-sacs. Street intersection designs provide individual profiles of each curb return for ultimate control. After Process is selected, all roads street intersections and cul-de-sacs designed are drawn in 3D with output files for stakeout and machine control created in seconds. Make changes to any profile and see the cross sections update at the same time. Before Process is selected in RoadNET Review each cul-de-sac design, move PVI s graphically, add vertical curves. Pick Process and it is redesigned in seconds. 12 After Process is selected Civil engineers can drive any selected vehicle through the RoadNET TIN to review all road, street intersections and cul-de-sac designs.

15 Carlson Civil 2007 Pipes Carlson Civil 2007 Design Sewer Pipe Profile routine provides the ability to design and draft pipe runs directly on a road profile or based upon a polyline in plan view. Working directly on an existing profile, you simply enter stations for structures, along with invert elevations, depths, or pipe slopes. Starting from a polyline drawn in plan view, Carlson Civil 2007 provides the stations based on the polyline vertices. Double-click to edit, and change the design in any way; adding, removing, or moving structures, changing pipe slopes, pipe sizes, invert elevations save your changes, and the profile is redrafted using precise control settings for the appearance and labeling of all structures and pipes. 16 Carlson Civil 2007 Lot Layout Carlson Civil 2007 features a robust set of tools for area/lot layout, design, editing, reporting and labeling. From the initial bounding property and roadway geometry, lots are specified by area and minimum frontage, and Carlson Civil 2007 does the rest. Once defined, the Lot File Manager/Editor allows editing and detailed reporting. User-defined attributes are easily added to lot data, such as owner, value, zoning, etc. An entire subdivision of lots can even be instantly defined by choosing the existing linework and text within each lot. Carlson Civil 2007 even has an awesome Lot Inspector that displays all lot information in a floating dialog box simply by hovering over the lot! Simply Remarkable! 17 Carlson Civil 2007 Annotation Carlson Civil 2007 does easy and fast annotation of lines, curves, crow s feet, leaders, and boxed text, as well as North arrows, Bar Scales and other symbols. There are also special commands to quickly create offset dimensions, building dimensions, and adjoiner text. Carlson Civil 2007 also generates line, curve, and point tables, and provides a library of special lines for fences, treelines, and other special features. Legend Creation Carlson Civil 2007 also introduces a powerful and remarkable tool to check for text overlap, and either correct it automatically, or bring the user to each instance of overlap and allow the choice of which correction to provide. Overlapping text can be slid along the geometry, offset, sent to a table, reoriented, flipped, or stacked to fix the problem. This is an amazingly efficient way to quickly clean up a drawing.
