2 Who Is That CAD Girl? Jennifer DiBona is a long time CAD consultant and trainer doing business as That CAD Girl. She is based in Raleigh, North Carolina. Jennifer has a degree in Surveying and spent about 15 years working as an engineering & surveying technician before leaving to become a Civil 3d Implementation Certified Expert (ICE) for an Autodesk reseller. Today, as That CAD Girl, she provides sales, support and training for Carlson, AutoCAD and IntelliCAD software and Carlson hardware and data collection. Jennifer specializes in Field to Finish, Surface Modeling, CAD standardization and Carlson Software implementation. 3 Creating Profiles in Carlson Software Depending on the Carlson program you are using, the commands to create profiles can be found under different menus. For instance: In Survey, profile commands are available under the Surface Menu In Civil, profile commands are available under the Profiles Menu There are various methods of creating a profile. 5 Quick Profile Quick Profile is a tool allowing you to create a dynamic profile along an alignment defined by screen picking two points, a Centerline (.cl) file or selecting a polyline as the alignment. Elevations for the profile can be read from Screen Entities, a 3D polyline or up to 2 Surface (.tin) Files. The Quick Profile Viewer allows you to modify the view by exaggerating the vertical scale. You can also: Save a Profile (.pro) file Draw the Profile Print the Profile view Depending on the surface source data and the method of defining the alignment, you may be able to click the Adjust Alignment button to move or stretch the alignment and have the Quick Profile dynamically update. Profile From Surface Entities Profile From Grid or Triangulation Surface Profile From Points on Centerline Create Profile from Surface Entities This command allows you to create a Profile file (.pro file) where the elevation data is supplied by elevated Lines, Polylines or 3D Faces. 7 Create Profile from Grid or Triangulation Surface This command allows you to create a Profile file (.pro file) where the elevation data is supplied by a Grid (.grd) or Triangulation (.tin) file. The alignment can be defined from a Centerline (.cl) file or a Polyline in the drawing. This method of creating a Profile file is the only one that allows you to link the Profile to the source of the elevation data. 8 Create Profile from Points on Centerline This command allows you to create a new Profile (.pro) file where the elevation of points along the alignment are used for the elevation data. The alignment can be defined from a Centerline (.cl) file or a Polyline in the drawing. The points to be used for the elevation data can be chosen by screen picking, by specifying point numbers or a point group. The Maximum Offset Tolerance can be used to discard any points falling too far away from the alignment. Input Edit Profile File The Input Edit Profile File command in Carlson Software allows you create a Profile (.pro) file by manually inputting profile data. The PRO file created by this method is not associated to any horizontal alignment. Changing the Profile Type changes the column headings in the table so that you can enter values specific to the type of Profile being defined. Generic profiles have station, elevation and description columns Road profiles have generic profile headings plus a vertical curve and sight distance/k value heading Sewer profiles include generic profile headings plus step up, pipe size, pipe thickness, manhole elevation and manhole ID fields Pipe profiles include all generic profile headings plus a pipe size field Crossing profiles are used for pipe crossings along the centerline Circular profiles are used to define vertical curves as circular instead of parabolic Jennifer DiBona (919) ContactUs@thatcadgirl.com Page 6 of 8

9 You can use the Check Stations section of the window to enter a station and find the elevation and slope at that location. You can also specify a Reference Profile (.pro) file that shows up in the background. If you have specified a Reference Profile you can use Check Stations to find the elevation on both the active and Reference profile at a particular station. For instance, you may have an existing ground surface profile loaded as the Reference Profile while your active profile is for a sewer system. You can use Check Stations to set the Rim or Invert elevations of the sewer profile. Click the Settings button to change the display and design settings in this window. 10 Click the Tools button to make changes to the entire profile such as translating stationing and elevation or reversing the direction of the profile. Profiles from RoadNet Although Carlson s RoadNet feature generates profiles (and sections) for its own use during the design process, you must set your Output File Defaults options in RoadNet Settings to have the existing and proposed Profile (.pro) and Section (.sct) files exported so that they re accessible outside of RoadNet.
