3 Nordson Corporation TECHNICAL PUBLICATION 179 a- 1 Finishing Equipment Division, Amherst, Ohio SUPERSEDES 7179 ISSUED 5/82 TIME INTERVAL CONTROL MODEL FET-1 Figure 1 - Model FET-1 Time Interval Control DESCRIPTION The Model FET-1 Time Interval Control is a solid-state sequential timing device for use in can lining and other applications that require precise on/off cycling and time delay sequencing. A signal from a triggering device (limit switch, photocell, etc.) starts the timing sequence which consists of a delay time interval followed by a duration time interval. The FET-1 will operate one or more 24 VDC solenoids or electric guns provided the total current draw of all solenoids does not exceed 1.6 amperes. The solenoid circuit is regulated to provide consistent solenoid response. The output stage is designed so that a momentary short across any one output terminal will not damage the components. All control circuitry is in the form of one solid-state circuit board so that downtime is minimized. The FET-1 has two timing ranges to permit a greater variety of applications. 10 IT- 4-8 OBSOLETE TECHNICAL PUBLICATION Nordson COrpOratiOn Finishing Equipment Division ISSUED 5182 SUPERSEDES 2/80 OPERATION The FET-1 Time Interval Control when signalled by a triggering device (photocell, limit switch) provides a pre-set delay followed by a pre-set duration. The solenoid (24 VDC only) is connected electrically to the timer and controls the firing of the gun. NOTE: Each gun in the system must be activated by its own solenoid. To improve the gun s response a three-way air relay valve may be installed between the gun and the solenoid. Electric guns are connected directly to the FET-2. Circuit Board Controls The FET-1 offers two timing ranges which are selected by a pair of slide switches located on the circuit board. Q Q Switch A at the lower end of the board selects the DEL timing range. Switch B toward the center of the circuit board se ects the DURATION timing range. Sliding the switches toward the rear of the cabinet provides the low (short)mng range ( milliseconds). C Slidina the switch toward the front of the cabine; provides the high (long)ming range (20-1,000 milliseconds). B The fuse 0 C protects the circuit board components. Cabinet Panel Controls A- The two (2) ten-turn, locking potentiometers on the cabinet face permit adjustment Figure 8 - FET-1 Circuit Board to the time intervals desired. The dial readings are only approximate. Fine tuning of the delay and duration dials will be necessary after setting up a timed system. However, once set, repeat accuracy will by with +1/4%. Delay intervals are controlled by the dial on the left, while duration intervals are set with the dial on the right side of the cabinet face. A circuit breaker both controls the timer and protects it from damage due to electrical failure. (Old style timers use an on/off switch and a 1 amp fuse.) A test button allows the operator to manually test the timer settings. An output switch controls power to the solenoids. This switch is used for warmup of the timer. LITHO U

Using the figures obtained in steps 1 and 2 compute the dial settings required using the chart or the following formula: LOW RANGE setting=time Interval I 10 HIGH RANGE setting=time Interval 100 Example : DELAY DURATION HIGH RANGE 600 = 6 00 MS = 3 00 MS 100 I Unlock the dials, set them to the determined settings, then lock the dials in place. Slide the switches on the circuit board (see Figure 8) to the correct range posit ion. Turn the output switch to OFF. Turn the FET-1 Timer on. The indicator lamp next to the main power switch should glow. Allow a 20 minute warm up time then turn the output switch to ON. 9. Since dial readings are only approximate, fine tuning of the delay and duration will be necessary before starting production line. Once dials are fine tuned additional adjustment should not be needed. LITHO U 5 A

13 0 Nordson OBSOLETE Nordson Corporation TECHNICAL PUBLICATION i&&i1 Finishing Equipment Division, Amherst, Ohio SUPERSEDES 7179 ISSUED 5182 INITIAL START-UP, (Continued) Dailv Start Un Once the FET-1 Time Interval Control has been installed and the timing established, it is not necessary to re-adjust the unit unless the line speed is altered or substrate size is changed. To activate the timer turn the output switch OFF then turn the unit on at the timer circuit breaker. The indicator light should glow. Allow a 20 minute warm up then turn the output switch to OFF. Dailv Shut Down Turn the Time Interval Control off at the timer circuit breaker. General MAINTENANCE As with any solid-state device, the Model F-ET-1 Time Interval Control requires no periodic maintenance unless the unit is subjected to adverse environmental conditions such as dust, vibration or moisture. Nevertheless, difficulties may occur with the operation of a timer system. Before troubleshooting the FET-1 determine that the problem does in fact rest with the control. If the output lamp (on the cabinet face) flashes, the problem is probably outside the Time Interval Control. Servicing the FET-1 must be performed by a qualified electrician familiar with AC and DC circuits. The electrician must use standard and appropriate techniques for servicing in accordance with all applicable safety codes. The following chart will help in checking out the FET-1 unit. TROUBLE SHOOTING I PROBLEM No power to timer (unit on lamp OFF) Guns not firing (output light FLASHES) CAUSE Check the circuit breaker. (Old style units use switch and fuse) Check input power connections. Check line filter capacitor. Check nozzle for clog. Check gun solenoid coil. Check photocell /light source (or limit switch). Check fuse on circuit board. Check slide switch(s) for continuity. Check transformer secondary. Check potentiometers. Replace circuit board. Replace transistor. Guns fire eratically Check photocell /light source in proximity sensors (or limit switch). Check potentiometers. Check gun solenoid coil. Check ouptu filter capacitor. Replace circuit board. Shut off all power to the FET-1 before opening the control cabinet. Use the power isolating device you installed ahead of the timer. Conduct all continuity and resistance checks with the power off. To check the ten-turn dials: 1. Unplug the printed circuit board at Jl (refer to Electrical Diagram). 2. Rotate the dials counter-clockwise to zero. 3. Attach an ohmmeter to the two rear terminals (terminals #l and #2) on the potentiometer. 4. Set the meter to the 100 K scale. 5. Slowly rotate the dial clockwise. The resistance should increase steadily to 100 K ohms. If the resistance drops off during the test replace the potentiometer. (A dead spot in the potentiometer may cause erratic gun firing.) 6. Repeat this test with each potentiometer. To check the transformer primary: 1. Turn on the power to the Time Interval Control. 2. A voltage reading within the operating line voltage limits should be obtained between terminal #l on TBl and the ground stud (at the top of the cabinet). Be careful. Electrical shock can be deadly. Do not come in contact with the electrically hot terminal board. I A To check the transformer secondary: 1. Ttlrrb on the Imwer to ttm Time Interval Control. LITHO U.S
