Traditionally attendance to our meetings decrease in the second part of the year but I believe the upcoming chapter programs should encourage you to participate actively till May. This month our chapter meeting technical topic will be Clean Room design. The presentation will provide an overview of clean room standards, clean room theory and ventilation strategies. So please join us for our lunch meeting on March 18 at Rock Bottom. On March 25, the young ASHRAE engineers (YEA) will tour the Seattle Bullitt Center. The Bullitt center will apply for certification as a Living Building. To be certified as a Living Building a structure is required to be self-sufficient for energy and water for at least 12 continuous months and to meet rigorous standards for green materials and for the quality of its indoor environment. The tour is open to all ASHRAE members. Increasing the energy efficiency of existing and future buildings is the great challenge of our profession. The Puget Sound chapter was recently approached by the City of Seattle to provide input on Seattle s Climate Action Plan that includes ambitious targets for energy efficiency and greenhouse gas emissions and outlines a range of near-term (by 2015) and long-term (by 2030) actions to put Seattle on the path to achieving those goals. Several representative of the chapter will meet in the coming weeks with the city. Please contact the board of governors if you would like your ideas to be expressed regarding this initiative. To conclude I would like to encourage our members and friends in participating to our annual ASHRAE Golf Field Day that benefit ASHRAE Research. The event takes place on Friday June 5 at the Harbour Pointe Golf Club in Mukilteo. Please have your firm consider sponsoring a Hole. In addition we will also cover filtration from pre-filters to HEPAs, their location, and how the different types of filters work. Speaker Bio Lisa Warner, Life Sciences Segment Manager, Camfil USA. Lisa has over 30 years experience in various business and technical roles, covering the clean room market for advanced materials and air filtration. In her current role with Camfil she is responsible for business development, marketing strategy and sales to the Life Sciences industry. She is currently a member of the ISPE HVAC Filter GPG team. 3 Puget Sound ASHRAE Upcoming Events Young Engineers of PS ASHRAE Meeting Behind the Scenes Tour of the Bullitt Center This month we re taking a tour of the Bullitt Center! The evening will include a real nuts and bolts tour by Steve Reidy whose firm, PAE Engineers, helped execute this world class MEP design. This tour will focus on the detailed performance of the building s MEP systems with an emphasis on lessons learned in the Design vs. Actual department. Attendees will leave with insight into maintenance and reliability requirements of a Net-Zero Office. As a bonus, we ll have a visit and short presentation by Kyle Hasenkox, our Region XI YEA chairperson. Kyle is Principal and Senior Project Manager for Rocky Point Engineering in Victoria, BC. This event is open to all persons in the building design, construction and operations sectors. We really want to see broad participation. 4 2015 HVAC Code Proposal Updates After gathering input from a number of industry experts, Ecotope assembled and submitted four code change proposals to the Washington State Energy Code (WSEC). The code changes are organized around a dedicated outside air system (DOAS) and are intended to significantly reduce heating, cooling, ventilation, and fan energy in a range of commercial buildings. On February 5, 2015, more than 20 members of the ASHRAE Puget Sound chapter participated in an HVAC code brainstorming strategy lunch to discuss opportunities and potential challenges associated with the code change proposals. There was a general sense that the DOAS code changes would be effective in helping the WSEC make progress toward meeting the mandate to reduce energy use by 70% by 2030 compared to the 2006 code. However, some participants suggested that there are various conditions that can arise in commercial buildings that may require a different design configuration and that there should be some flexibility in the DOAS code requirement. The input from this session was valuable and contributed directly to the final proposals submitted on March 1, All WSEC code change proposals will now be reviewed and discussed by the Energy Code Technical Advisory Group (TAG) mid-march to mid-may Then recommended proposals will move on to the State Building Code Council (SBCC) for further review before being selected to move forward to public hearing. 5 Sign Up to Mentor Students Puget Sound Engineering Council Mentor Nights The PSEC Mentor Nights are hosted at participating colleges and universities with the purpose of giving engineering students (college & occasionally high school) an opportunity to ask questions in person from a variety of practicing engineers. Discussions cover a wide spectrum of engineering disciplines, professions, career pathways, continuing education post-graduation, professional registration considerations, professional engineering organizations, responsibilities, and ethics. Pizza and refreshments provided. These one night volunteer events are a great way to meet other chapter members and to encourage future engineers.
